Five word: Got to catch them all (Possible, but ridiculously time consuming due to color difference for some gals that cannot be bred)
The game mechanics is ridiculously deep. You are looking at around generation 5 of Pokemon in terms of mechanics.
I will mention some of them and refrain from more until the community gets farther along.
Personality*: Affects Growth
Ability: Various even along same type of gal (cannot be switched), like adaptability (2x STAB) and a lot of other abilities
Unique Points: Each individual gal has somewhere between 80~170 bonus points put into their stats (higher growth), you need to read Japanese to know how much to which. (Or beat the game, and there's a new person in galcenter that gives you a number instead)
Effort Points*: Depending on the action you take, your girl gains effort points that effectively raises their stats, attacking raises attack effort point, special attacks raises technique effort point for example.
* Changeable using items, personality is random and difficult to get what you want, effort point is costy, for max effort points, you are looking at 50k per gal
PS: You can trade non-event/special gals using the PC, it's the last option (1st option to put, 2nd option to retrieve)
