Re: Battle Royale

Is that main kid the same actor who played L in the Death Note TV show?
To answer my own question...

I got the characters mixed up. He played Light in the tv series.

Also, if you haven't seen the live action series, it was pretty damn decent.

The social message in battle royale 2 is "USA sucks", it's on the level of sequel idiocy of the never ending story 2...

The prequel for "The Thing" is coming out this year. I'm rather excited.

Oh shit. I didn't hear anything about that. Is it the team that was found before them or is it unconnected prequel?

It's a prequel to the John Carpenter movie, it deals with the team they found there. It actually is a remake of the original movie, back from the 50's, i believe.

It's a prequel to the John Carpenter film yes, but the John Carpenter film was both a remake and a new adaptation of the original short story... so this prequel I don't think had the original film in mind so much.

Especially since the characters are going to be Norwegian.

Hmmm, the thing was a reat movie because of kurt russel and john carpenter, the story was nothing particularly great. Checked their hystory and i seriously doubt Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. can live up to the fans expectations. When you decide to make a sequel/prequel you always have to deal with the weight of the original.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

I just watched "Ip Man" tonight, and it was fabulous. It's a period piece about the Japanese occupation of China with a lot of martial arts elements. I'm hesitant to call it a martial arts film though because it is so much deeper and more powerful than that. For me, the movie touched just about every emotion you can think of. Everything from amusement, happiness, hope, despair, horror, hate, bitterness, and sadness. If I could think of more words for emotions, they probably happened too. I mean at one scene in the movie, it was so intense for me that my body started shaking and it kept happening off and on for the rest of the time... I'm a lot easier to rattle than most people, but this doesn't usually happen to me.

His punching is really incredible, mostly in the karate fight.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Recently watched the remake of "I Spit on Your Grave". What makes this remake interesting is that up here in Canada at least they've been pushing the original back onto shelves. The reason I find that interesting is because the original was banned back when it was released. While I haven't seen it I can almost guarantee it doesn't stack up with some of the gore porn we have today in series such as Saw and Hostel.

To talk about this movie I'm going to have to spoil it for the most part... but I feel having it spoiled will not destroy the impact of the film, but I'll still put it in spoiler tags.

As to the movie itself, I enjoyed it. I wasn't sure what to think during the first 40 or so minutes of the hour and a half movie, which includes a rape that carries on for around 20 minutes. Sure the violence on the screen wasn't anything compared to some things we've seen before, but despite the lack of gore, it was the actions taken on screen and the sheer brutality of it that just made it grating and shocking. This wasn't showing violence for the sake of violence, this was showing the brutality and harsh realities that rape victims can experience in reality. The consequences of these actions drive the protagonist deep into the darkest portions of her soul and set up the third act.

The second act is the rapists going about their lives, one trying to live witht he guilt of what he did, another trying to hide his horrible sins from his wife and daughter, and the other three simply trying to cover everything up so it won't come back to bite them in the ass.

But in act 3, it does. It bites them back fucking hard, and act 3 is the entire purpose of this film. It's a revenge fantasy, about a woman brutalized and assaulted to the point where her soul is broken and she can never return to who she had once been. The scenes of torture she puts her assailants through feel justified. She even responds to their pleas for sympathy and begs to let them go with: "That's what I said... you didn't listen,". It's cold, dark and very powerful.

I'm actually surprised how much I actually enjoyed the movie as I usually don't like this kind of film and how hard it was to watch at times, but it packs a punch along side the scenes of visceral violence that spoke to me. Is it because I'm a woman, or a feminist? I don't know but its possible.

There's not really much else I can say about the movie. All I can say is give it a look if you don't mind taking a peek into the darker aspects of human nature. It has an almost complete lack of innocence and wraps itself in the darkest desires people hold in the cold corners of their hearts and shows it to us on the screen.

Even though I enjoy nonconsensual fantasies quite a bit, I'm still clear enough in the head to know that real, actual rape is one of the most horrible things that can happen to a person. To make a movie about it and properly show the deep scarring the victim has suffered requires some skill, I can imagine. I'm... not sure I'd be man enough to go and see this movie.

I can't even remember the last time rape came up in local newspapers.

Back on topic!

Has anyone seen I am number 4 yet? I've heard wildly differing reviews on both sides.

I'm hesitant to see it. From the 'first look' I got during the previews before another movie I went to see in theaters, I'm afraid that they'll try too hard to make it an action AND romantic movie. Now, these two elements can be combined, but it has to be done right, and judging from the preview I saw, I don't think they did it right. I don't know if it's that the girl seemed too uninteresting/uninterested, or if it's because the scenes they showed with the protagonist and the love interest felt really forced, or what. Best way I can describe it, is at the time that I saw the preview, it felt like they were trying to make an action movie, but have a 'Twilight'-esque romance going on throughout it. And they focused too much on the romance.

Again, that's just my impressions from the preview of it that I saw. I'd have to see the actual movie to make a final verdict.

Decided I wanted to read the book first, so I can hate the movie properly.

When I'm finished with the book, I'll go see the movie xD

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Just got back from "Battle: Los Angeles", and in my opinion, one of the best, if not the best, alien invasion movie I've ever seen.

I enjoyed the acting, the effects, the sound, the story. Maybe I liked it so much because of my military background, either way.

Story essentially follows a squad of marines as they move through a battle torn Los Angeles being invaded by aliens. Their objective was to find an overrun police station and get the trapped civilians out, and of course things go downhill. There were good action scenes, and some good emotional scenes to keep an uneven pace throughout that really works for the film.

While some scenes tended to be predictable, and you saw certain resolutions coming from the start of the film, the way they're performed and shot work really well.

While the movie doesn't outright explain why the aliens are attacking, there are some theories that are mentioned that actually seem pretty solid, and somewhat frightening as we've seen the same thing in reality.

All in all, highly enjoyable movie for me. I'd recommend it for those who like military sci-fi, or simply alien flicks and war movies.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

@ Battle LA: At least Michelle Rodriguez lived through that one.

In other news, I rewatched Flight of Dragons, one of the few animated films I liked as a child. It still holds up as entertaining, its readily apparent theme that a balance between human development and nature is necessary if we are to survive is still more engaging than any modern effort I've seen, especially since it was years ahead of the green movement. Though, it still isn't nearly as good as The Wizards, the other picture I watched at the time that handles the same issue.
