I understand that the idea is to reward good rollplaying, my point is that when it comes down to it, Jenn is the one being tested, not me. Limiting your choices for an RPG to what the player is capable of rather defeats the point. I can certainly *try* to give good lines, but if I don't do particularly well it shouldn't be an automatic fail - especially given all of Jenn's applicable skills.
This is a plot-critical NPC who we would have lost if there wasn't another group waiting in the wings to deal with him... whom we might *still* lose in the end because of one "roll" that for I know wasn't even a roll but rather an automatic fail (as the related posts made it sound).
So, if it wasn't an automatic fail, what exactly *was* that roll? 1d10+5(charisma)+2(smooth talking)? Against what? Did I get -1 for bad word choice? -2? -5? -10? -20?
