Re: Tentacle Souls

Is this the part where we all cry in unison for Shadow to come back and continue the story?
Sure, why not? SHADOW!! Severe lack of story here!

Re: Tentacle Souls

Sorry guys. It was very rude of me to just vanish off the face of the Earth like that, but the stars aligned to screw me over. Real-life got to me (as it often does) and I found myself with drastically less time to come on here and write updates. In addition I was also deeply unsatisfied with this CYOA and didn't think it was half as good as Lost in the Jungle, and I was feeling more and more uneasy with the 'involuntary sex' nature of these CYOA's altogether. Still kinda am, as a matter of fact.

BUT...

It turns out I can never make a completely clean break with anything and today I was overcome by an urge to come back here and see if I can still muster something half-decent out of this story. Plus I have a bit more free time at the minute, that always helps. ;)

So without further ado:

Option B2, then Back into the Caves

----
Snapping out of a brief reverie - wow, your mind was miles away for a moment there - you refocus on the situation at hand. The Ice Orc is lying prone in the snow front of you... and your inherently tentacle-y nature makes you very vulnerable to prone victims, regardless of recent protestations of morality.
Thinking quickly, you throw some of your remaining energy into another evolution. In no time at all the change flows through your body in a blast of dividing cells and magic. You're better adapted to take up residence inside a host now, a handy skill if ever there was one, although that evolution means you're now running worryingly low on energy.

No matter. Mentally sighing, you squirm forward through the snow and crawl onto the Ice Orc's back. A choice of orifices are available to you, but in a matter of seconds you choose to take the least foul-smelling one (these guys really need to work on their hygiene standards). You press yourself into the poor creature's slightly open mouth, and slide part-way down the back of the throat, before anchoring yourself in position with sticky tendrils. You release a small blast of magic down these same tendrils, and you feel his brain fall under your power. He is now your puppet.

Excellent! That went surprisingly well. Looking out of the Ice Orc's eyes, you see that little has changed in the meantime (and there are no convenient tracks to follow) so you decide to plow forwards through the snow, back towards the caves from which you entered this dimension. There's bound to be something - anything - of significance in their frozen heart.

In no time at all you're back in the shelter of the caves, the exit to the snowy plateau at your back. The U shaped ledge is still here, one branch on your left and one on your right, and so is the black abyss in the center... but fortunately the irritating Blango have gone. On a whim you decide to take the right hand branch of the U, and walk forwards across its icy surface. The only sounds you can hear are the sound of your host breathing and his soft foot-falls... the cave itself is eerily silent. Soon a frozen wall rises on you left, meeting the ceiling and preventing you falling into the yawning chasm, but on your right you spot a little alocove. Ducking into it you find a circular room - man-made? - with walls of blue ice mixed with rock rising on all sides. It's completely open to the sky above. On the far side of the room stands a little wooden door, but of far greater interest is the floor, which is strewn with debris. Amongst the straw and what looks like bits of smashed wagon, you see some human bones, an oddly glittering ice-crystal the size of your fist, with a hint of magic about it, a wooden shield (a bit battered) and a still-lit lantern. How peculiar.

Your thoughts are broken by the sound of raised voices coming from behind the wooden door. It sounds like a heated argument indeed...

----

Option A) From the detritus on the floor, what do you take? You could take everything, but it'll burden your host down.

Option Z) After taking what you want, go through the wooden door on the other side of the room and see what lies beyond.
Option X) There's something too strange about a wooden door in the middle of this cave... all your 'it's a trap!' alarms are ringing. Leave this alocove and go back to the main cave.

Status:
Health: 30/80
Energy: 20/80
Morality:12/100 (Saint-like)

Evolutions:
- Thunder Bolt I (Like Fire Bolt, Thunder element).
- Water Bolt I (...ditto).
- Ovipositor I (Allows you to lay eggs within the orifice of a host. At low levels, these eggs are weak and may not hatch properly. Further upgrades reduces this risk. Each egg costs 10 energy to plant, but the hatched tentacle is autonomous and commanded by you).
- Dread I (Releases pheromones that make organisms more afraid. The higher the level, the stronger the effect it has, and the better it works on people (lower levels are effective mostly against animals).
- Teleport I (allows you transport small, inanimate things back to the Dimensional Nexus, or wherever you set up a lair in the future. Further upgrades allow you to move bigger, and eventually alive things. NOTE: This spell will never be usable on yourself).
- Confusion I (Launch a magical blast that can disrupt the brain-waves of a foe. Useful against well-armored creatures that aren't very vulnerable to normal attacks).

- Firebolt II (Like Magic Sting II, but Fire Element).
- Scale Armor II (tougher scales, reduce damage taken).
- (Lust) Slime Ooze II (your slime induces lust in those that contact it).
- (Sleep) Slime Ooze II (you sleep makes those that touch it sleepy. Very... sleepy).
- Perception II (20 Energy. Use body language and other subtle, chemical clues to put together a general hint of what someone is feeling at any given time. Is that a molecule of sweat? They're nervous. Are their fingers tapping? Clearly impatient.)
- Aura Detect 2.55 (20 energy. Your sense of auras is refined, and you can see them from a great distance and judge their power levels more accurately. Also allows you to faintly detect Cursed auras).
- Stealth II (20 energy required. Become even sneakier).
- Swim II (20 energy required. Can you guess what this evolution does?)
- Body Shock II (20 Energy required. A powerful wave of magical energy runs over your skin. Akin to picking up a live electrical wire. Obviously limited to close-range combat, though).
- Tentacle Arts II (20 Energy required. Recover HP through sex).

- Infest III (30 Energy. Last almost indefinitely inside a host).
- Growth III (30 energy required. Grow to a chunky, 6-foot long python, complete with split heads.)
- Magic Shield III (30 energy cost. Lasts longer and tougher to break than Level II).
- Magic Sting III (30 Energy required. Costs 5 energy to use, but a direct hit will send most foes flying off their feet).

Re: Tentacle Souls

Eat the crystal for power, take the lantern and shield. Wear a skull as a hat.

Politely knock on the door.

Re: Tentacle Souls

A. Grab crystal, hang on to skull, use shield as hat.

Z. As blarg said, we must first knock politely

And welcome back!

Aren't we here to grab a macguffin for the Paladin?

A. Grab the crystal, If it's not what we're looking for just consume it for power.

X.
I think it was a nevermelt ice thingy? Which we may have snagged? I don't actually remember, I would have to read back through and I'm feeling somewhat lazy at the moment.

I can confirm that the Paladin requested we obtain some NeverMeltIce for her from this Dimension. Whether or not the magic-imbued ice crystal before you right now is what she's looking for, I couldn't possibly say. :D
I hate you... Voting for not draining the crystal

Re: Tentacle Souls

Didn't we already get the crystal thingy before at the harpy event? It was instant teleported back to nexus, wasn't it?

Can we use any of our skills while in another creature?

I'm gonna go with what Sturm said, but also, listen to heated argument for a little bit before knocking. They could after all be arguing about something particularly interesting, or what ever happened to their pet Ice Orc.

Would it be smart to get out of the Ice Orc to be extra quiet while pilfering the cave full of human bones, or wouldn't it? I really can't decide...

Re: Tentacle Souls

Option Z and Pick Up Everything

----

Rummaging through the assorted detritus on the ground, you pick up a human skull - not the least bit ominous - and try to fit it over your head. It's easier said than done, and it takes a bit of smashing against the wall before it can sit perched on your dome like a particularly grim fez. The other stuff also intrigues you; picking up the battered shield, you sling it over your left arm, and pop the the lantern and ice crystal into a conveniently sized groove running down the inner side of the shield.

Satisfied that there's nothing else of use here, you move more cautiously towards the door, behind which you can still hear shouting. Taking a deep breath, you raise your right fist, then rap smartly on the door three times.

Silence. The argument stops in an instant, though furious whispers soon replace it.
"...the Hell?" you hear a man's gruff voice ask. "Could it be one of... them?" asks a second voice, higher and feminine.
"I'm not an expert, but I don't think they knock politely," the man retorts. "Three... two... one..."

With a deafening crash the door blows open, revealing a man and woman, dressed in thick furs, with cold steel... rectangles? pointed at you. Their jaws drop at the sight of your... magnificence, but before they can bring themselves to attack you raise your arms to the side of your head in the universal gesture for surrender.

"What the actual fuck?" the woman splutters, and the man looks just as stunned as she sounds. Thinking quickly, you resort to telepathic communication.

"Don't worry!" you shout. "I don't mean you any harm. Just being nosy."

They don't seem entirely convinced, but the woman does at least lower her metal rectangle, and slide it into a holster on her waist.

"What do you want?" retorts the man angrily; no weapon lowering from him. His partner glances at him, and you detect a faint sense of unease between the pair.

"Nothing," you reply, trying to keep the situation calm. A damaged host isn't the end of the world, but it'd be annoying. "Can I come in?"

The man brushes some thick black hair out of his eyes and glares at you resentfully. His partner seems rather more sympathetic.

"I suppose so..." she mutters. Clasping him on the shoulder, she pulls him back, and he reluctantly tucks away whatever he was pointing at you. They both step back into the room behind the door and you follow them through.

Interesting. You can feel a strange power in the air, but it's not magic. There's a faint tang of metal in the air. And it's not so much a room as it is a corridor, stretching hugely left and right, and with other paths branching off in other directions. It's open to the sky above - it's blue and pleasantly cloudless at the minute - and a wooden lift mechanism with a hand crank provides a means of getting up to the surface.
But what immediately grabs your attention are the walls themselves. Set a regular intervals are units (cells?), each sealed off by a wall of thin ice, rows and rows of them, stacked five high. Behind each layer of ice stands a silver man, each individual completely immobile, blank and identical.
You take a step closer to one of the cells, for a closer look; it seems their skin is perfectly smooth silver metal, all over the entire body, with completely featureless blank faces. Their eyes are nothing more than empty black holes and the mouth is little more than the merest suggestion of a line across the bottom of the face. Out of the side of their heads rise equally sleek metal bars, which twist and meet at the top of the skull.
A thought hits you; this is a vault. Or perhaps a tomb.

You turn to the human duo for an explanation, and spot them standing on a podium in the center of the corridor you hadn't spotted before. On it stood a plinth, and on that was one grey button.

"I think explanations are warranted," the woman began, glancing again briefly at the man standing beside her. "We're part of a mining operation. We're looking for NeverMeltIce and all sorts besides - it's amazing what you can find in these caves. But we we came across this patch of the caves, we didn't find any ore - we found this instead." She presses on, her speech growing more confident. "All these endless metal men, frozen in the walls. Our current theory is they're a work force from a previous civilization. We want to wake them up," (here she gestures at the silver button on the podium) "And put them back to work mining for us. My colleague, however, is somewhat more risk-averse."
"It's madness," the man says in his low-pitched voice. "God knows what might happen if we wake these things up. They might be defective. They might not wake up at all. Maybe they're sentient and want to be left alone."

As you weigh up your thoughts, all you can feel is the stares of thousands of blank, robotic faces on the back of your neck.

----

Option A) Through reasoned argument, persuade the pair to hit that button, awaken the metal men and get them to work mining! All sorts of ores means all sorts of benefits.

Option B) Through reasoned argument, persuade the pair to leave that button the hell alone. This is a big risk, and a totally unneeded one.

Option C) Incapacitate the pair - they're not going to listen to reason - and hit the button yourself.

Option D) Incapacitate the pair, then try to seal this place off. If the metal men do wake up, you don't want them to be able to escape this place.

Option E) Other.

I vote for A. What could go wrong?

Also, ask them about the Harpy King and/or a battle that happened here at some point in time. I forget what that big critter was that helped us, but ask them about him too. Barioth or something?

A mechanical army is always a useful thing to have.
Plus they're made of silver, and everyone knows shiny things in a fantasy setting are good.

Re: Tentacle Souls

Well spotted, Dracador. Since I copy and paste them each time then make any minor alterations needed, it's an easy mistake to make. ;)

So, it seems the voice of caution and/or cowardice has won out and you're going for Option B!

----

"I'm with him," you broadcast telepathically. "I don't think we should wake them up. It's too big a risk. You have pickaxes for mining, don't you?"

The rough man seems more suspicious than ever at your support of him, but of more concern is the look of irritation that flashes across the woman's face.

"Of course we have pickaxes, you ugly troll. But do you have any idea how much more efficient we'd be with our own workforce? We could revolutionise our entire operation. Think of the riches we'd uncover! Think of the profits! It's not even unethical. They're robots! They don't care!" Her breath fogs up the air as she speaks.

"You can't know that," you retort, a touch of sadness in your voice. She's not listening at all.

"I don't care," she retorts, sounding more like a churlish infant with every passing sentence. "I'm opening these cells up."

She takes a step towards the podium, but stops dead at the sound of a metallic click from the man. He's holding his shiny rectangle at arms length and pointing it directly at her head.

"Can't let you do that, Elene," he says, his voice lighter and softer than at any point before. He sounds even more upset than you.

She looks at him, completely baffled... but makes no further moves towards the podium. The silence begins to stretch on uncomfortably, with the stand-off seeming unresolved. You raise your spear (or rather, the Ice Orc's) and point it at each of them alternately, which doesn't seem to help anything.
As the minutes pass, the man's arm starts to shake and his outstretched arm drops a fraction.

Which is, of course, when it all goes tits up.

A soft growl is all the warning you get before it happens; a Blango, one of the stunted white apes, falls from above, leaping down from where the cave opens up to the sky. It lands on the man's head, sending him reeling sideways. His hand clenches instinctively, and the metal rectangle explodes. A second later, Elene is collapsed on the floor, stunned, blood leaking from a hole in the furs that cover her shoulder.
The man screams as the Blango rips furiously at his head, dirty, sharp claws tearing at his scalp as the ape howls. He brings up his arm to try to beat the menace off, but too late - it finds enough purchase to twist and sink its fangs into the man's neck. With a gargle and spurt of blood he collapses to the ground, staining the ice around him vivid red. The Blango hops off his corpse and pads menacingly through the sticky pool towards you.

Without pausing you dive forward and plunge the Ice Orc's spear through its back, killing it instantly. Looking up, you see the crisis isn't over; more Blango are pouring in from above, howling and whooping as they leap down. Five, ten, fifteen... it's a veritable swarm of the beasts, and whilst each is only half your size they're fast, agile and brutish. You spy several of them making their way over to Elene, who's still lying on the floor, hand pressed over her shoulder wound in an attempt to stem the flow of blood.

Oh, things clearly weren't bad enough. A chorus of screams announce the arrival of five Harpies, swooping in through the opening and circling the cave, black wings stark against the blue-white ice walls. Their speech is barely discernible through all the other din - howling, roaring apes, their own screams - but you can just about make out the words 'King' and 'avenge'.
You dash across the cave to stand protectively over Elene, skewering two more Blango as you go; unfortunately five more pour from above anyway. You take up a defensive stance and use your spear to beat away the closest Harpies and Blango, but there's so many of them it's clear you'll be overwhelmed soon.
You hear a cough from the floor beneath you, and ducking under a Harpy's talon you see Elene - her face a very scary pale white at this point - point feebly at the podium. With the metal button.

Ah, shit.

----

Option A) Back you and Elene up against a wall, and continue to fight nobly, holding off the swarm of Blango and Harpies for as long as possible. The wall will prevent any sneaking up behind you at least, and there can't be infinite amounts of them.

Option B) Damn it, press the button and release the silver men from their ice cells. They could save the day, for both you and Elene.

Option C) Drag Elene over to the lift mechanism you spied earlier, and use it to escape the cave. You'll have to fight off the vast majority of the beasts, however, and there's no guarantee the Harpies will leave you alone once you get to the surface.

Option D) Get the hell out of here and leave Elene to her fate.
D1) Use the lift mechanism to escape.
D2) Escape out the same wooden door you came in by.
