Outlined almost always looks better for small sprites.

Sometimes, I only outline the border and leave parts on the inside, like the chest and pelvic areas, with no outline.

pic.PNG It doesn't seem to work too well for this one without tweaking the colors a bit. I would've had to use a lighter outline color.

Yea after fooling around with all kinds of colors and the outlined one stands out way more,so if she were naked in a desert with a tan background and hazy heat wave in the foreground she's sorta invisible without her outline, but with the outline it definitely looks better for every scenario including a tan desert background its just i have editing to do to get the look of the character better like a lighter outline that rydin said but for no zoom it looks alright, anyways enough practice for now.

OK so I've been looking at a lot of options of enemies for the game and is it a good idea if I make a large sheet of possible enemy ideas that way we could choose what will and not work so i don't waste time making something too complex.

So i made a new enemy
out of frustration of me not getting anything done for awhile.

The idea is that she shoots fire
out of her lantern and she floats trough everything so your bullets can't reach her when she is behind solids.

The not so great concept i did in the last hour or so

So yay or nay?

Idea wise, it's a great Nintendo-hard enemy, and should be simple enough to implement given what I know of the system the game is being made in; just make the enemy have no 'on collision' event with the walls, and some form of general 'hang back at a certain distance and fireball the player' AI. Of course, I don't actually have any say on the inclusion of something to the game, but it seems fitting.

Sprite-wise, that is absolutely hot. Even disregarding the fireball, pardon the terrible pun.

Yea i think anything too complex is a bad idea and i'm sure Rydin32 would agree.

Inventive simple enemies of 2 actions simple movement like walking and jumping floating, and its signature attack is good enough for the basic enemies i think.

Anyways i have a sheet of at least 5 new enemies like the ghost girl and a slime started and their general idea of movements planed.

I still have a lot of practice to do to even get a grasp of doing a whole games artwork from scratch, even one that is supposed to be Nes style, but hey I'm still learning and I'm trying my best to keep up to date, i just have way too many distractions and it's just devouring all my free time.

And here's another not so original idea
i had all I'm gonna say is he hops around and makes annoying noises at night.

On another note, I'll really have to finish up the stuff for level one now instead of expanding the enemy quota or else a demo is never going to be released.

This is sounding like a great game i love Platformers/Contra-style with rape in, and have been looking for a decent one for a while now, Though i think this game needs Gorilla rape... I don't know why i want to see it but i do...

A gorilla doesn't fit into any levels as of yet maybe later in some jungle forest area, but i made a base sprite of it just now with a quick example just to see how it looks, I have to think of a neat attack and rape for it as well and if i can't well.... no gorilla:(, but i have a very good imagination so I'm sure I'll think of something.

Well, the gorilla could throw barrels. :p

Seriously though, a gorilla should be pretty straight-forward, I think. It's just a semi-intelligent animal, after all. He swats you down with his hand, gropes you, and molests you.

Well i was thinking of changing him to a "lumbering, hardhat wearing, chain gun wielding, executive gorilla wearing a suit" or leave him as is and he attacks by beating his chest and sound wave rings come out that hit you, then he moves in for the fun times or something like that or he's just a very hyper enemy in speed that can easily can run and jump and punch/grab you up close, rapes you(sorta like the little humpers(fleamen) in Castlevania), but i still need to find out whats best for rydin to program.

I have way more ideas, but it's way out of league for a small simple game.

Re: Contra-Style ROR Game - Sprite making challenge.

Haha did no one notice my disappearance? (haven't checked my messages yet oh god...)

Who's ready for some bad news?! (No i'm not gonna stop working on the game....)

My house flooded a little over 3 weeks ago.
"So?"
My computer... it is normally located on the floor.

Fucking EVERYTHING is gone. Game files, sprites, EVERYTHING.

There is hope though! I now have a new fancy computer (windows 7 meh).

and! if at least one of the original testers could send me the test version, I can use a decompiler to recover all of the game mechanics, sprites, and all the other fun stuff.

Lets get this back on the road shall we?

Well, it's good that you're back. I doubt anyone had noticed though, since these threads often go for a while with no posts.

Yea i was beginning to worry about you...
I'll resend you all my sprites in one zip as well as new ones but for the engine why don't you use your Megaupload link from before, the game is still there i just checked.

Excellent. Thank you. I figured the link would be no good anymore. Thanks for checking.

Right now I have to get my new computer situated. Get all my old programs and such. I think this weekend I will start by trying to get the demo back to where I left off.

Fuck I hate having to redo things... expecially time-consuming things.

Also to anyone who lives in a area like mine, pay for the expensive flood insurance. Id be fucked right now if insurance hadnt bought me all new stuff.

Re: Contra-Style ROR Game - Sprite making challenge.

Sorry to bump this, but is it too late to be a tester? I'm a huuuge Contra fan and was looking to test out this engine.

Would anybody still happen to have the previous build (one linked in a megaupload link, which is obviously dead since MU is gone), as opposed to the latest build?

Re: Contra-Style ROR Game - Sprite making challenge.

ALRIGHTY THEN! Its been awhile but I am pleased to report that Urine and I are back at it.

It took me awhile to get everything back together but I'm now ready to pick up where we left off.

The engine has been modified and Urine is currently redoing all of the sprites and from what I've seen, this is gonna look nice.

For the 100's that have asked about the demo/test version i sent out to my testers, here's what ill do... I'll release to everyone the original test version because it is now horribly out of date. The first level is only half its real length... the jumping is god awful painful... and the game is gonna have a much more refined look soon. So here was the old test

Also I will be starting a blog for regular updates and downloads. Ill let you all know when it is up.

You forgot to mention the complex enemy persuasion system that we've been working on, it's gonna be revolutionary, gonna change the endings and everything, also it will help you avoid some conflicts and make deals with monsters that will benefit the adventure.

Re: Contra-Style ROR Game - Back at it

Okay, I just gave the demo you posted a go, and I have just one piece of advice: Make the jumping less shit. Seriously, it's horrible. It shouldn't take me over a dozen tries to get through one simple platforming section, and in the boss room it's virtually impossible to get back up to the top row if you fall to the bottom.

Now, maybe you've already tweaked it, I don't know. But that's my two cents.

I thought I implied that that's already been taken care of but I guess I wasn't clear.

Yes the jumping was a huge problem and that was the first thing we ever fixed.

Again, that was just a initial experiment that is very old. We have a team of very thorough testers that went through all the releases very carefully (and they did a great job too!).

Once Urine finishes the sprites up I'll put out a legit demo that will prolly contain some experiments with enemy spawning.
