She rolled Sera onto her back, careful not to put too much pressure on her wings, and pressed her hands to the wound, focusing her will again. The wound closed, and Sera's eyes fluttered. "Litu...?" she muttered, trying to focus on the watery girl. Litu sighed in relief, then looked up at the goblin.

"I believe the proper phrase is 'two down, one to go?'"

I'm gonna have Litu heal Sera a little more, because she could be killed in one attack right now.

Litu focused more of her will on Sera, who perked up almost instantly and jumped to her feet. She cracked her neck and turned to the Leader goblin, who glared at the duo, then lunged forward at Sera.

This time, Sera easily avoided the attack, knocking the goblin's blade aside to protect Litu as well. She took a half pace back, then lunged forward, spitting acid at the goblin. If you look under Litu's stats, in her inventory, is her spellbook, which contains all of her spells. Synchronity attempts to "synchronize" Litu's lust with the enemies. Think of it as a hose. If Litu has more lust than the enemy, then it flows from high pressure to low (from Litu to enemy) until they are equal, or one container is full. If the enemy has higher lust than Litu, then the lust flows from the enemy to Litu. Synchronity was used once in this battle already, to incapacitate the bowgoblin.

The pair had been walking along for the better part of an hour, though with a few frequent breaks. Litu was a little weak from her long imprisonment, and had found the cross country trek to be a little more difficult than she had expected.

"Well, technically, you've been this far south for however long those goblins were set up in that temple. Did you not know?"

"They usually drugged us before moving us, at least for the ones they kept around. It took the shaman a few days to find the right drugs to put me under, but she managed it. I never knew where we were. It was probably to discourage escape attempts."

Sera frowned slightly, looking over at Litu. "How long were you captured for?"

Litu glanced over, smiling sadly. "It's been about a year since I last saw the moons. It's been much longer than that since I travelled the rivers of my home. Almost a century, I believe."

Sera coughed, looking at Litu with bewilderment. "I'm sorry, how long? How old are you?"

Litu laughed, then winced. "I'm sorry, but can we rest again? As for your question, isn't it rather rude to ask a woman her age?" She winked playfully, then accepted Sera's hand and sat on the ground.

"I think I've already given my opinion on politeness, Litu."

Litu laughed again, smiling up at Sera. "True, you did. It has been about 250 years since I was formed."

"Formed?"

Litu nodded. "Yes, formed. Water spirits like myself aren't born in the same way creatures of flesh are. Instead, my mothers called upon our goddess, to bless and breathe life into what would become me. It takes a very complex ritual in order to properly imbue the waters of life. My healing spell is a very simple derivation of that ritual, though it also taps into the primal emotions in order to power it."

Sera blinked at Litu. "Huh. Humans do it very differently. They have rituals of a sort, but I think that's more of a social thing. The pious will tell you that a marriage ceremony does something with the souls of the two that allows them to have children, but anyone could tell you that it's bullshit. Never had much belief in the Gods, myself."

Litu smiled quietly. "I could have guessed that much, Sera. You don't seem like the sort of person to believe in anything other than strength."

Sera laughed, her voice echoing across the plains. "You got that right. Are you ready to keep going?"

In answer, Litu stood up slowly, grimacing as she put her weight back over her feet. As Sera had found out when she offered to carry her earlier, over a hundred gallons of water was extremely heavy, especially when it was covered with... whatever Litu's "skin" was made out of. Magic, probably.

The pair continued on their journey, chatting quietly. The wind changed slowly, and Sera tilted her head back appreciatively. "Mm. I love the smell of the ocean at high tide."

Litu glanced over at her, a little surprised. "You can smell the ocean? I could feel it through other senses, but I still can't smell it. You have a surprisingly strong nose."

Sera laughed, then sniffed again, her brow furrowing slightly. "Hm. Smells like wood smoke. I guess someone's having breakfast." Sure enough, there was a plume of smoke visible on the horizon. Sera smiled as she looked at it. Slowly, though, she followed the plume down, to where it was no longer visible on the horizon. Her smile was slowly replaced with a puzzled look.

"We aren't that close yet.... That plume is...." She stopped in her tracks, a look of horror passing over her face. Litu glanced back at her companion, then up at the smoke.

"Sera.... I don't think that's-"

A rush of air blasted past Litu as Sera unfurled her wings with a snap and took off in one fluid motion. Litu was nearly bowled over by the burst of air, and she chased after Sera as quickly as she could, which was nowhere near the speed of a dragon in flight.

"Sera! Wait! She's too far away.... I have to hurry! She could be flying right into an ambush!"

Litu crumpled forward slightly, taking a form that looked much more like a puddle of water (albeit one with half a young woman sticking out of it), and started moving along at a good clip. She crested the final hill between them and the village, and pulled up short.

The village was destroyed. Wood smoldered and smoked, and even from here, Litu could see blood staining the ground. Sera knelt a dozen feet away from her, also on the crest of the hill. She stared down at her home, burnt and destroyed, her hands pressed to her mouth. Even when she was dying, Litu had never seen such a pained look on Sera's face. She approached slowly, calling out to Sera softly.

Sera turned toward Litu, her eyes slightly unfocused as she tried to keep from crying. "I-it... I... They're gone. Oh gods," she said, sobbing into her hands. Litu knelt down next to Sera, pulling her gently into a hug. The tender gesture broke open the floodgates, and Sera began crying in earnest, burying her face into Litu's shoulder.

It wasn't clear to Sera how long she spent crying there, but the sun was already well above the horizon when she next looked up, sniffling slightly. Litu looked down at her, then leaned forward and kissed her forehead. Sera sat up slowly, allowing her stiff joints to move and breathe again. "I... I need to go down there. See if there's anyone... and... take care of the-"[color] She coughed, her eyes brimming with tears again. She turned away from Litu, angrily wiping the tears away. "No time for that," she muttered to herself, before starting down the hill. Litu followed behind her, remaining a respectful distance away.

I won't describe to you the horrors visited upon that village. Even if I could do the dead justice with my words, I would not. Sera found herself closing down, allowing her stony exterior to shield against the part of her that wailed from terror and the pain of loss. She looked down into the face of a dead child, whose eyes stared dully into the sky. Gone was the joy of a life so young, and gone was the curiosity that had driven this particular child to ask Sera for shed scales every day. Sera barely managed to swallow a sob as she knelt down and lifted the child's cold, stiff body. The ragged edges of the wound that had cut her life short crackled as Sera moved her, dried blood flaking away and drifting on the breeze. Sera carried the girl to the pyre, and then continued her grisly task.

It took more than a few hours, but finally Sera was finished with her macabre task. All that was left standing was the great gate, though the oaken soldiers that had been intended to keep everyone safe had been shattered. All the other buildings had either already burned, or had been torn apart by a grieving dragon to build a great pyre in the center of the town. Sera had found no survivors. She hadn't expected to. There were some bodies missing, and some had been burned so badly already that they were hardly recognizable. Sera looked down at the mayor's badge of office. She had found it with the administrator's body, surrounded by dead militia and with a sword in her hand. She hadn't much liked the man in life, but she could assume that, if she had seen his last moments, she would have found herself respecting him much more. Sera set the badge on the blacksmith's anvil for a moment. Litu watched her quietly, worried for her friend. In the time since they had arrived here, Sera had barely said anything, and she looked like a zombie walking through the ruins, and not a proud warrior woman.

Sera inhaled slowly, then blew out a massive fireball. The pyre caught instantly. She had anointed it with alcohol from the bar's basement, which had somehow not gotten caught up in the disaster. The alcohol burned hot, and the aged and dry wood crackled as the fire ate it up greedily. Sera watched the pyre blaze until she could no longer recognize any faces through the flames, then she turned away from the pyre to see Litu watching her. She matched the water spirit's gaze, staring levelly at her.

"Now what?"

Sera looked down, then looked over at the badge of office. She walked over to it and picked it up with the blacksmith's tongs, then turned back toward the pyre. Litu threw herself between Sera and the pyre, sensing what the dragon girl was planning to do.

"Sera. Stop."

"They're dead because I wasn't here to stop it, Litu. My friends, my family. Even though we were never the closest, they were my family. They were all I had."

"Blaming yourself won't bring them back. You don't need to seek penance."

Litu didn't flinch. She opened her arms wide, exposing her chest to Sera. "Well? Here I am, standing in your way. End me, Sera. I would rather you kill me now, then make me watch you become a monster. Who is this really about, Sera? Is it about your family, or is it about your pride?"

Sera grabbed Litu by the shoulders, not even noticing that the water spirit had grown slightly so that she was taller than Sera. "I COULD HAVE SAVED THEM! BUT INSTEAD I WENT AFTER TREASURE AND SEX! THEY DIED BECAUSE I WAS WEAK AND SELFISH AND VAIN! BUT I WILL NOT LET TH-"

SLAP! The blow was surprisingly strong, sending Sera stumbling back, where she tripped over the anvil and landed in an undignified heap. Litu towered over her, glaring down. "You can't save everyone, Sera. The more you blame yourself, the more it becomes clear that your lust for vengeance is not because you want justice for your dead family. It's because your pride was hurt. You thought you were the strongest around, and that you would be able to keep anything bad from ever happening. Guess what? The world doesn't work like that. You are not a god. You are only mortal, and you. Can't. Save. Everyone."

Sera stared up, her rage dissolving, leaving her with nothing but sorrow. She sobbed, pressing her hands to her eyes, the badge forgotten beside her. "I... Oh, gods. I'm sorry...."

Litu shrank down to her normal size, then knelt down next to Sera. For the second time that day, the water spirit held Sera in her arms while she cried. Sera pressed her face to Litu's shoulder, pulling the spirit close and clinging to her like she was a rock in the middle of a rushing river. Litu gently stroked Sera's hair, allowing her to cling and cry.

In time, Sera sat up again. Her eyes landed on the badge of office, and she leaned forward, picking it up again. She stared down at it, though not with the same self-destructive glare she had earlier. "I really don't deserve a friend like you."

Litu smiled softly. "You're not bad, Sera. A little stubborn, a little short of temper. But you have a good heart." She reached out and took the badge from Sera, then plucked a strand of Sera's hair, eliciting a yelp of surprise from the girl. Litu looped the hair through the hole in the badge, then muttered an incantation. A shimmering chain of silver flowed from her fingertips, weaving around the strand of hair. When she spell finished, the badge was on a long chain with a strand of hair wrapped through the chain. She presented it to Sera, who reached out for it reverently.

Litu's hand snapped around Sera's wrist. "Promise me, Sera. This medal will stand for justice, not vengeance. When you feel that rage, when you want to strike down those who have hurt your pride, you will feel its weight. And you will do what is right, not what is easy. Promise me, Sera."

Sera looked up into Litu's blue-green eyes. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words caught in her throat. Finally, she looked away. "I... I don't know if I can. I've always been the sort to react, not think. I don't know if I can stay my hand, if the time ever comes that I don't know what is right. I'm sorry."

Litu smiled softly. "I know you can't. But it's good to hear you say that you know you can't. If you had just promised right out, I would have accused you of just saying what you think I want to hear." She reached out, and gently clasped the medal around Sera' neck. The chain was long enough to allow the medal to rest against Sera's heart. Litu reached out and gently traced one of Sera's scars. "I think it looks better like this than as another scar."

Litu stood, offering a hand to her friend. Sera took it, allowing Litu to at least pretend she was pulling Sera up. Litu smiled softly at Sera, who smiled back softly, and said "Now what?"

Sera looked down, thinking for a moment. "We need to go to the capital. They need to know that.... About this. And.... We may be able to find something to do from there. The mercenary's guild is stationed there. It may be a good place to start."

"Mercenary work?"

Sera shrugged and started walking away from the pyre, which had started to burn down as the wood collapsed into ash. "It pays alright, and it's something to do. It was kinda what I had been planning to do, anyway."

Litu smiled, though Sera didn't see it. "So life goes on?"

Sera stopped, then sighed. "Yeah. Life goes on." She continued walking for a few minutes, then said, "By the way, Litu. Thank you."

"Don't mention it."

The duo walked in comfortable silence, occasionally broken by a sniffle or cough from Sera, which Litu was tactful enough to pretend not to hear. They continued thus for a few hours, heading toward the great road that led North to the capital city of Drotu. As they neared the road, they became aware of a commotion on the road.

AUTHOR'S NOTES
I said everything would change. In case it wasn't clear, Sera had been intending to put the medal in the pyre, then brand herself with it. Fortunately, Litu managed to convince her not to. This is a partial reference to one of Sera's namesakes, who, like Sera, is a dragonborn. She is covered in scars, due to being over 20 thousand years old. Most of the scars are less than a century old, though, save for a few. Dragonborn in my headcanon are basically immortal, being largely immune to disease, and entirely immune to the effects of aging, and being universally fearsome on the battlefield. They also don't age, because their cells regenerate perfectly. Those of you who have read the Dresden Files (Tassadar) may recognize this as similar to why wizards don't age appreciably. It is also said that eventually Harry's scars will heal, if he gives them the chance (spoiler: he never gives them the chance). The particular Sera that I'm referencing with the scarification has a few scars that she has never allowed to fade, because they were each important to her for some reason. The idea of scars having importance to someone is an idea that I've always particularly liked.

In another digression, I'm now going to spend about a thousand words talking about Aulondria's natural satellites. She has 9 of them. "But, Ryan!" I hear you saying. "You said the Seventh Moon was setting! Why is the Seventh moon setting last if there are 9 of them?!" To which I reply, "How the hell did you get into my dorm room, and how do you know my name? And where did you get those tentaclOH GOD WHY!"

In answer to the actual question, the 7th moon is the moon with the widest orbit around Aulondria. As such, it remains in the sky the longest, and has the longest phases. The Full Seventh lasts for about 2 weeks, and the whole period takes over two months. The seventh moon orbits right at 45 degrees from the equator. Unlike Earth, Aulondria's axis of rotation is perpendicular to its orbit, so it doesn't have seasons the same way Earth does. As such, its climates are extremely stable, affected more by the movements of its moons than the movement of the planet around the sun. But I'll go into Aulondria's climates more later. For now, let's keep talking about the moons.

On the night that directly preceded the events of this update, only 4 of the 9 moons were visible. They were the first moon, known as Grandfather (because he's the first to rise and the first to set), the Twins (the eighth and ninth moons), and the Seventh Moon, which has no special name because it is the only moon that is visible to some degree every night, without fail, at least for the continent our story takes place on. Some call it the Mother, because it tends to rise right after the first moon, and is always the last to sleep, and also for the superstitious beliefs tied to it. More on those later. First, let's talk about the twins.

The Twins are very odd. As they travel across the sky, they appear to race, one pulling ahead only to be passed by the other an hour later. They are also known as the Runners for this reason. The reason they act like this is because the twins orbit around each other and Aulondria at the same time. Due to their own gravity knocking their orbit around, they have a very strange pattern across the night sky, which is deteriorating by about 1/1000th of a degree per year. It is estimated that the Runners will crash into each other in about 3000 years, which would be quite something to see. Within 1000 years, the debris from the impact will form into a ring. Curiously, both of our current characters will (assuming they don't get killed) live long enough to see both events.

Because of their weird orbit, the Twins do not have phases like our moon does. Instead, they go through all the phases in one night, except for one night every decade or so, when everything lines up perfectly so that they stay in position all through the night. On that night, they remain full all night. It is said that if a couple marries on the night before, they will never suffer in their relationship so long as they consummate on the night of the Full Twins. Other than that, the Twins don't have a lot of superstitious beliefs tied to them. The only other major belief is that if a child is born (unless one of a set of, you guessed it, twins) on a day where their orbit perfectly frames Grandfather, that child is cursed with a set of two souls. What we might call a bipolar person, the Aulondrians would call Twin-Born, because they are like two people in one body.

The seventh moon myths will be included in a separate post, because they represent over a thousand words alone, and I'm over the character limit.

The 7th moon has quite a few superstitions tied to it. Some believe that it is an omen of bad luck, and refuse to leave the house when the 7th moon is new (which lasts 2 weeks. If someone with this belief has no family or friends, they presumably leave the house quite a bit skinnier than they went in.). Conversely, some people believe that the 7th moon is a symbol of fertility, and it is said that if a virgin has her first time during the Full Seventh moon, that she will surely be impregnated on her first time, and will be a great mother to many children. The Lamia tribes tie special significance to the Seventh Moon. Their creation myths say that the Great Mother laid 10 eggs, Aulondria and her 9 moons. She fertilized only two of them, and the myths say those eggs were Aulondria and the Seventh Moon. The myths go on to say that, when the Great Mother was attacked by the (Wolf is the closest translation from the ancient Lamian tongue. Think like Fenrir from Norse Mythology), the Seventh Egg was knocked out of the clutch, and rolled far from the other eggs. Most other people who believe it is a fertility symbol got this belief from the Lamia. Once every ten years, when the Full Seventh falls on the 2 weeks surrounding Midsummer, all of the Lamia tribes get together, young and old. They share a great feast, and then, starting at midnight, a great orgy begins, with hundreds or thousands of snake bodies writhing together. The young children are usually put to bed before the orgy happens, and the teenage ones have their own orgies away from the adults. During the days, each tribe shows an art, or shows off their prowess. There are 13 tribes, so each tribe has its own day, and on the 14th day, the elders of each tribe tell the Great Creation, which takes all day and all night. On the 15th day, the tribes leave each other. Much like the ancient Olympic Games, a truce is called between each tribe, and the truce lasts until all Lamia have returned to their own homes. Only once has the truce been broken, and that year was the year of the great famine, which wiped out almost 30% of the Lamia. As a result, it became known that any tribe that deliberately broke the truce would be immediately punished by the other tribes, with their leaders sacrificed to appease the Great Mother.

To the Lamia, the purpose of the Festival of the Lost Egg is to give thanks to the Great Mother for granting them a good harvest, and to offer their passions and lust to her so that she will grant them more. Much like others who believe in the Seventh Moon as a fertility symbol, the Lamia believe that any child conceived during the Festival of the Lost Egg will be blessed to be mother to many children. Most Lamia are hermaphroditic, though there are a few rare ones with only female reproductive organs. However, Lamia are also fairly rare in that they can reproduce outside of their race without difficulty. As such, they have begun in the past few decades to open the Festival of the Lost Egg to other races, after first contact between the human kingdoms and the Lamia tribes 37 years ago. While they had known of other races before meeting the humans, for the most part all the other races left each other alone. Humans tended to be the catalyst for races meeting and becoming friendly with each other, and the Lamia were no exception. However, the fact that they were only met fairly recently, as well as the tendency of the average Lamia to be tribal, and thus uncomfortable in big cities and towns, means that humans and Lamia don't really get along very well. While the governments are cordial to each other, and many trade treaties have been chartered, there are small, but loud groups who treat Lamia like demons. The apostle of Elornia, one of the major gods of human culture, has specifically demonized them, because Elornia's teachings say that snakes are the souls of sinners, cast back onto Aulondria from paradise. As such, they believe that Lamia are people who have not only sinned in their past lives, but have done so willingly and gleefully. Needless to say, Elornism is not popular among the Lamia tribes.

I'm certainly not talking about Lamia for any specific reason. Nope. *whistles innocently*

More seriously, if you guys like these, I might do write ups for Dragonborn, Water Spirits, and other races as we meet important characters of that race. I can also expand the background more, if you want that.
