Oh believe me, that should be a synonym with "non-existent" here, where workers have been tricked into thinking the guys at the top are protecting them against "the ev0l unions!!!!111"
It's just another example of taxes paranoia in the US. If someone doesn't belong to a union, they think they are paying higher taxes so other people can have benefits they don't get. So....they don't like them, and it's a vicious cycle of people not belonging to unions, being jealous of others that do belong, and basically wanting to get rid of them altogether.
The weird thing is that a lot of the things unions have been best for aren't even tax related. A lot of progress in improving work conditions, requiring lots of breaks during the day, getting some holidays off, that sorta thing. Exactly the kinda stuff Newbie is having trouble with.
But yeah, I agree they can be self centered. When the benefits are more excessive like those at GM, the company hires less people and makes it harder for people to find work... It might be good for the few who get hired but not for the working class as a whole. I guess I'm pretty "meh" about unions one way or the other... =P
Also unrelated hate: As I was writing this post, I had a dinner plate on my lap and spilled broccoli all over myself. UGH!
