Heh. When Malacet attempted to rebuke the vampire, via an amulet he created, I was halfway expecting it to backfire completely and the vampire to rebuke Malacet.

He didn't create it, he's a 14th level character. It's an artifact, actually it's part of the stone the main bad guys have that lets them control undead, he really had nothing to do with it being there. The amulet wants to rejoin the stone, so it forced the drow to the stone, and the main bad guys sent Gershalt to take control of her because they were too lazy to do it themselves.

Ah, my bad. Been years since I played D&D, and I don't think my play group ever got to that level.
