1. Tsujidou-san no Jun'ai Road
2. Kurogane Kaikitan -Senya Ichiya-
3. Majikoi

In my view, the main thing Mangagamer doesnt have is a huge series to push, So Majikoi would help them a ton. Plus Minato Soft makes the best games.

Just so everyone understands, whatever wins this survey probably won't be licensed, because chances are its either going to be something that's already done(Muv-Luv, Clannad, some random popular moege) or something basically impossible(Fate Stay Night or anything else Type-Moon, Leaf games, Shin Koihime).

Even if something that does stand a chance to get a localization wins, that still doesn't = instant license. Instead think of think of this survey as a way to check what kinds of games people want. It's more about the genres that are near the top then the actual games.

That's not to say don't vote for what you want as that might lead MG to some interesting titles they might be able to get, but don't think for a moment anything less then the most over hyped things are going to "win".

Even if they dont license it the important thing is that they can see the fetishes and the things people want to play, so if a lot of people like a good rpg game with sexual content, they will try to do it, if they like ntr, the same.

However... what i dont truly get is why mangagamer or jast usa dont do a kickstarter or something like that about "licensing and translating games", doing a survey every x months and doing the campaign to cover the translation costs or at least a good part of them. It would help them translate bigger proyects reducing the risk. At the same time they could continue to translate the games they decide to.

They get like insight which gernes are most popular and that would help the in future licensed games. I Agree about the survey method the thing that really confuses me the most is. How is MG & Jast choosing there Visual novels? I would like to think that they choose Novels that is most demanded but if "No, Thank You" "vndb.org/v8701" Can get licensed how can't "Primal X Hearts" vndb.org/v14887 Not be?

Re: want a hentai game translated? now's your chance with mangagamer!

No, Thank You! was translated because it basically belongs to Clock-UP, making it an easy license for Mangagamer to grab and check out how willing the BL crowd was to actually open their wallets. They don't really have any other BL companies to test the waters with at that time, so it makes sense.

See, the sad truth about licensing games is that companies don't really have that much power when it comes to negotiations. How are you going to get a title that is considered good when titles like it sell less then a thousand at best? Sekai can kind of go around this because their CEO gives thousands of dollars in "donations" but they have a multitude of their own issues leading me to never buying any game from them.

The other issue is interest. Type-Moon and Eushully and a bunch of other companies just don't care about being brought to the west. It doesn't give a company that much money and doesn't really aid them much in any way. The market over here is tiny, and while steam has helped, a big story title on steam still sells less then 5,000 copies, which really is not that great.

People seem to think that Managagmer and J-ast are just ignoring "good games" but they aren't. They are getting what they can that seem to match market trends using their own sales data and what few companies are willing to work with them. They are not ignoring the best of the best, they just can't actually get them, or they wouldn't be worth getting, like Shin Koihime that would need to sell 6,000 copies at $45 be profitable. This hoolds true for basically any title that is 30-50 hours long and has top brand voice actors, they are way to expensive to be brought over to this tiny market.

I guess translating were more expensive than i thought...
But correct me if i'm wrong, Wouldn't translating games that have a high fanbase be in japan be a obvious choose? Koihime † Musou had good rating got Translated / licensed. Shin Koihime is getting pretty close to complete also.

The only reason i can come with why MG / Jast wont translate popular VH is the length of the games. 30-50 hour have a long script and would take long time to finish and you won't get any income for a long period or am i wrong?

Add to that the costs of licensing the game for use outside of japan and I think you need to pay for the licensed voices or hire your own voice actors. It's not like they don't want to bring those 30-50 hours games over, it's more like they CAN'T. They are time-consuming in translating them, cost a lot because they are well-known and I think the voice actors get paid per voiced line, don't know if MG/JAST need to pay them per line again or not.

But it's a shame that MG/Jast get dissed for financing their big projects with small nukige while Sekai Project does nothing and gets $$$ from their sheep just for saying "we want to license something, pay it all for us and we don't do anything" and kickstarting the hell out of it-.-

Re: want a hentai game translated? now's your chance with mangagamer!

J-ast once stated that voice licensing is like dealing with a mafia group. The prices for voices are ridiculous for some games, and all the top rated games everyone always asks for? Those have some of the top voice actors that cost the most. Shin Koihime has around what? 30+ characters all with different voices and most of those being well known actors? H game voice actors charge a premium for h scenes, and Shin is long. There is no way in the current market for that game to profitable outside of steam.

More or less, long games= horrible gains. They take more work, cost more due to line count and voices, take longer to release so less time is devoted to other things, and don't actually sell better at all. In the time it has taken to translate and release DC3, Mangagamer could have gotten 3 or so other titles done by that translator, all that would have probably earned them more money then DC3 would get them.

People don't like MG because they have a lot of nukige, but that's what the market supports. People actually buy 10-20 dollar cheap porn games, they don't buy average to long *good* games. Yet again, steam has reversed this some, but medium length to short length titles are always going to be better for release then something long, because steam users only buy stuff that's cheap. Managagamer and J-ast are businesses and long games don't make business sense to do.

The last thing is they can't prove to Japanese companies that a long game would sell, so none of them will give them longer titles. All sales data points to long story titles don't sell well, so they aren't worth it. Medium length nukige actually seem to be the best titles to sell outside of steam, and short 10 dollar stuff seem to be the best for steam.

Actually Japanese companies are one of the biggest issues. They don't care about the west for the most part. Type Moon doesn't care. 5pb won't give anyone their allages versions and their original versions(leading to a bunch of licesning issues making several games just not worth it). Eushully doesn't care. It doesn't matter how much money you bring them or promise them, they don't care about coming to the west.

My last point is that I would prefer 2 or three games the length of Shuffle or Da Capo 2 over something like Baldr Sky. I want more titles total, not just the best things. Would Baldr be cool? Yes. Would it take 6~ years to be complete? Yes. Could they do 3-6 games in that time that would overall be more profitable? Yes. Would I enjoy those 3-6 games more? Probably.
(Yes, I know Sky is technically 2 games. That would still come out to 2 games(1 story) versus 3-5 games.)

As for the just "do popular games, those will sell" argument... well sure, they sell better. By about 1-200 copies better. I mean, Gahkthun is steampunk, one of the most praised series in the west. It sold like ~500 copies. Eroge has sold probably in the 2,000-3,000's at this point. Shin Koihime would need 6,000 $90(I remember now, it was all three arcs for 30 and 2,000 sales each, or the whole thing for 90) sales to break even. Unless that fan translation comes through, is of acceptable quality, and they give it to Managamer for free, its not worth releasing officially.

Expensive is a bit short, the cost is incredible.

From japanese to english its quite common that the cost is 0.25 cents of dollar per word (and this could be called cheap). If a game has 100000 words it would be 25000$, then add the voice acting that its totally a mafia. Even if you dont do voice acting you have to obtain the license from the company that made the game, the cost could be quite subjetive.

Now compare it to the 2000 copies you expect to sell, depending on the price you find the profit.

However you may say "hey, but most games they translate doesnt have 100k words", but even so i gave a cheap cost, because games with:

1. Sexual content
2. Special vocabulary

Are more costly, being able to become even 0,4 cents per word. Depending on the language you are translating, as you can see this is a horrible price, adding this to the license, or even the voice acting... its too dangerous.

There are only two ways to solve this:

1. The market needs to improve.
2. They must receive fan translations with good quality.

Re: want a hentai game translated? now's your chance with mangagamer!

Results are in for those interested:

Rance being at the top is kind of surprising but nice to see, and it's followed by Baldr so gameplay stuff right at the top. Most the rest is whatever, Sonohana is already coming over technically, Majikoi is already translated and so is Fate Stay Night.

The rest are at least untranslated so its better then last year where half the list was things with translations. So overall better then last year.

What an Anti-climax. Does not even suprise me that Rance was at the top.
But i'm happy that Aiyoku no Eustia was on the list <3 I hope they translate that one at some point :>
