While looks play a role in it, I've observed that it's your drive to do something with your life that attracts women.

If you lay about and do nothing, you could look as handsome as you want and still wouldn't get women. Teenage girls and sex-deprived wives looking for a one-night stand, maybe, but not women.

Of course, you could look like Jabba the Hut, and even if you are successful as hell, you won't get anyone at all.

The key is finding the middle ground. All the pics I've seen of people here - even yours, Avatar - don't look anywhere below decent/good. Just have to have a drive is all.
