in order to be able to battle monsters,go to the house in the first part of the town and talk to the guy at the counter,after that check the wanted posters and a girl will teach you how to fight

i had the same problem in the demo. you have to talk to a girl in a bar who teaches you fighting and then you can fight.

Avast me hearties! (lulz too much puzzle pirates)
There's a point to take into urgent consideration.
When you notice you're getting your panties roughed up too much by the mobs, it's because something is obviously wrong.
You need to talk to the girl that taught you to fight from time to time, because she'll teach you all the skills you need to improve your performance on the battles.
I believe it has to do with how much you leveled. So the higher level you are, the better the skill she teaches you.
