Re: Healing the Soul (ranger)

Chloe: HP = 80, PP = 73, EP = 60/79, Status = Fine, Pregnant

The first man to whom she tended had taken a stab wound to the stomach, and her diagnostic spell confirmed that and told her that the wound was already going septic, his intestines having been ruptured by the blade. It would have resulted in a horribly painful death for the unconscious soldier, but thankfully this was something that healing magic could largely cure, and after a moderately powerful healing spell the wound closed and his immune system was strengthened against infection.

(The 3rd level healing spell is sufficient for this.)

Once assured that he would pull through, she moved on to the next person, someone who had suffered very severe burns on half of their body. The smell of it suggested burning oil rather than magic, a common tool used by the orcs, and while Chloe could have sworn this person looked slightly familiar, their blackened flesh offered no clues as to why that was or who that might be. Constant small bursts of healing magic would allow the scarring to dissipate, but this long after the burns were suffered and because it was so pervasive and had been caused by a lasting flame rather than a quick burst it would only do so much. Whether or not Chloe wanted to spend that kind of time on one person or move on, or perhaps give them a few moments to hopefully alleviate their suffering a little bit, she would need to make her choice quickly.

Re: Healing the Soul (ranger)

Focusing a moderately powerful healing spell on the stab victim would be more than enough for this poor soldier as her training made sure all of her magics where heightened and more effective. Confident that the man would live though be incontinent for a few days Chloe moved on. At this one she nearly gagged at the smell but put on a brave face. The blackened features seemed familiar but she didn't think to much about it but instead got to work. Deciding on small rapid healing to at lest alleviate some of the lasting effects. Still she couldn't spend to much time but maybe in the future she would be able to help such marred people later. Moving on to the next soldier Chloe examined them to determine the best course of action.

The next three patients that she saw to required much the same as the first man she'd treated in this tent, each one taking up a small chunk of her energies to heal but the cost gradually adding up. A broken limb, a crushed collar, and a gash across the stomach that left the subject's innards visible were all healed in short order, requiring only moderate acts on her part beyond the healing magic. The one she came to after them was in extremely bad shape, however, as his arm was very nearly severed halfway between his elbow and his hand, the bones cut through by a blade and the marrow spilling out into the bloodstream, a lethal combination that would require a more complex spell to restore his systems in addition to the regular healing. He also had a nasty gash across his face, plus several small puncture marks suggesting that he had been shot, and a diagnostic spell indicated that the bullets were still inside. It was a wonder that he was still alive at all, but if she wanted to save him she would need help from a regular healer to remove the bullets and reset his bones, after which her magics could fix the rest. Whether she wanted to call one of the mundane healers over or leave the unconscious man as too badly wounded to save, she would need to decide quickly.

Chloe's grimaced and quickly called over another to assets her. Looking over at the poor man who thankfully remained unconscious she decided treat the open bleeding arm that would require the bone to be set before using some targeted healing to at lest prevent the man from bleeding out. The next step would be remove the bullets before healing those as well. It would be grueling work and she was already feeling some fatigue. Thankfully she had been handed a potion and if it got to severe a drain on her she would drink it.

(*Assist. *Least. Seriously, you spell grueling correctly and get those wrong! :p Also, did I have someone hand her an energy potion at some point? I don't recall as much but have vague recollections of maybe considering it at one point or another.)

The work was indeed grueling, and also quite stressful given that the poor soldier took the opportunity to wake up during the removal of the bullets, at which point he started screaming and thrashing and very nearly thrashed hard enough to get one of his lungs pierced by the surgical tools they were using. Anesthesia magic had no effect, the pain driving him beyond reason, so they needed to drug him before they could continue. After close to an hour of work his wounds were healed and he had drifted back into unconsciousness, however, and after that Chloe and the man who had come to assist her got back to work on other patients. Some of the wounded had already died by that point, the healers overtaxed and overworked and unable to see to them properly before the magics that had stabilized them initially wore off, but it was only a handful and something that was generally to be expected.

Once done with that man, Chloe went about healing a few more with simple injuries before coming across another tough case, a woman who had lost an eye to an arrow and had another left sticking out of her side, the shafts left in to prevent her from bleeding out. The other had been left to the side, and Chloe would see immediately that the arrows had barbed tips, and the one still inside of her was close enough to her liver that removing it improperly could lead to a quick end that no amount of magical healing would be able to prevent.

Re: Healing the Soul (ranger)

Chloe mopped her brow with her sleeve and sighed. She was quickly wearing out but there was so many wounded. Drinking her potion to refresh her energies Chloe got to work. Looking over the wounds Chloe frowned, barbed arrows where nasty business. Bringing up her detection spell Chloe went over the wound with the arrow to determine if she could how close it was to the liver. Pulling it out would likely do more harm than good so the left pushing it threw which was still risky. After examining that wound Chloe moved to the eye with her spell. If she had the time she could probably restore this woman's sight but it would take far to long and far to much energy. Sighing Chloe would heal this wound as long as her spell detected no other complications before moving to the arrow wound in her side. Position was everything and if she wasn't careful the woman would die.

Question
Is the wound in her side come from the front or back or is it directly in her side?

The shaft of the arrow was sticking out of the woman's front, and Chloe's diagnostic spell would show her that the deadly shaft was barely more than an inch away from her liver. If she pushed it straight through, there was little doubt that an edge of it would nick the delicate organ and kill the woman quite painfully. It would need to be twisted, and delicately lest she shred too much flesh or break inside of her patient, and lower powered healing spells would need to be supplied constantly to ensure that the pain didn't cause her to awaken and wrench the arrow into someplace more delicate. It was a small miracle that moving her here hadn't already done so, in fact, but that was something that Chloe could puzzle on later if she wished.

Re: Healing the Soul (ranger)

'Oh dear' she thought to herself. Chloe took a step back and looked at the various healing implements about her. She would need help that was a certainty. Looking about she called for one of the other healers to come assist her. "Okay we need to drug the patient so she doesn't wake during the procedure." As Chloe explained her intent she took the fletching off the end of the arrow. "Once we are sure the patient is not going to wake up as we do this I want you to push the arrow threw following my direction alright. Ill give the word when to start. I will be using my magic to make sure we don't hit anything else vital." With the instructions given Chloe brought up her diagnose spell once more to examine the wound. The arrow would have to be rotated and the easiest way was to do so as they pushed. "Take it slow as you push rotate the arrow counter left till I say stop." Chloe focused on her spell making sure the arrow made enough of a turn to avoid the liver.

Another healer arrived after a minute, and the man frowned and nodded before giving the unconscious woman another syringe filled with anesthetic. Following Chloe's directions with careful steady hands, the arrow was slowly removed without further trouble, the minor tears in their patient's flesh created by the necessary twisting quickly healed by her magics. Once the barbed head of the arrow was through the other side, he carefully broke it off and then slid the entire arrow out the other way rather than pull the fletching through. After a few quick bursts of healing, it looked as if the woman would be alright, and then Chloe was free to move on to other patients.

Another hour wore on, and then another, and then yet another after that, with a few more wounded requiring that someone call on her aid, or requiring that she do the same again. The number of untreated began to dwindle as Chloe found herself at a person who had died before they could reach them, not the first time perhaps but still an unpleasant one. Moving on, she found a woman who had seemingly fallen into a coma, their skull cracked and partially caved in. This sort of wound had never been covered before, but she would know that healing this would require a delicate touch and careful shifting of the broken bone back into place away from the brain. Leaving her to heal like that would likely cause permanent brain damage, but if she had lived through it she would probably continue to do so with some magical aid, and Chloe was free to do that instead if she thought it a more prudent option.

Re: Healing the Soul (ranger)

Chloe could feel her energies waning and it wouldn't be long before she was spent. Still this woman needed help but she wasn't sure if she was up to the task. It was tempting to just heal the wound and be done with it, but what sort of life would she be leaving for the woman to live. Frowning at the situation Chloe quickly brushed the easy route out of her mind. After all the last time she tried something the easy way she ended up doing more harm than good. Bringing up her diagnose spell she checked the wound to make sure no shards of bone where lodged deeply into the brain. If that was clear she would move to force magic using manipulate to carefully bring up each bone off the brain Chloe would set it in place with weak magic. Slowly rebuilding the skull with careful measured steps before healing the injury completely. If successful the woman should live a full healthy life as long as she didn't meet another mace to the head. Sighing at the end of the arduous task Chloe moved on to the next patient knowing full well that most of these poor souls would probably just be sent back into the meat grinder.

Her careful and thought-out spellwork was successful, the constant use of diagnostic spells to ensure she wasn't causing any damage and force spells to shift the broken bone back into place far more draining on her will than on anything else. Holding the bones in place with magic, it would be necessary to perform a quick burst of more powerful healing to set the bones together before she could finish putting them on the mend with her weaker spells, but afterwards it was at least possible that the wounded woman would make a full recovery.

Moving on, Chloe was able to get through the rest of the patients left in their wing with the help of the other healers, and then would be left with mere maintenance of those they had as a run came round to say that everyone should stay where they were working. More wounded were brought in periodically, but they were usually ones who had already been healed in the field and few of them stopped in Chloe's tent anyway. It took much of the night and left her utterly exhausted, but Chloe's work was largely done, and she was offered quarters in a tent on the field to rest and regain her strength, as she was one of those set to be put on shifts for taking care of the many other patients. Whether she wanted to retire now, or wait a little while and keep working or perhaps get some food and water would be up to her.

Some rest was better than no rest and at any rate she wouldn't be able to stomach any food after the horrific injuries she had seen. Heading to the tent assigned Chloe took her robe before casting one last spell to clean it. Exposed she toweled herself off before slipping into the covers doing her best to forget all the blood she had scene during the day. "I hope the girls don't worry to much sense Im not home...." She hardly had the time to finish the though before she was out cold.

Though it would be hard to get a restful night of sleep after that, and she would wake up feeling mildly ill, Chloe would find herself well enough to continue her work, assuming she wished to continue aiding in the healing. More or less everyone else was still around, save for one less experienced healer whom she would later find out had stressed herself to the point that she passed out on the job, and had made the same mistake as Chloe in trying to overheal someone upon initially arriving. She would quickly run into Beligar after rousing herself and getting out of bed, and the head mage would quickly command her; "Go and get something to eat, and something to drink. They've got plenty to spare, and you're going to need it if you're sticking around, we've still got a lot of people to care for."

Re: Healing the Soul (ranger)

Nodding at the instructions Chloe headed off to the tent to get something to eat. Maybe she would feel better after getting some food in her. Eating heartily even though she was hardly hungry Chloe decided to check on her critical patients before starting up the healing once more. War she decided was a pointless waste. All these lives ruined for someone's ambition. Sighing once last time she put on a happy face and started her rounds.

The tent set aside for the cafeteria was quite full when Chloe arrived, many of the soldiers she saw either wounded or appearing debilitated by worry or trauma, scars that no healer could hope to repair. As she sat down to her meal, however, she spotted one of the soldiers she'd met the same night as Chandler, Lanys, picking at a plate of food while seemingly by himself. She could leave and get to her duties, but he might be able to tell her what had happened to some of the others, possibly including Chandler.

Chloe nearly forgot about food all together and called out to the young soldier. "Lanys!" Once the words left her mouth however the simple fact that he was all alone made her heart sink in fear. Biting her lip slightly she approached the young man to speak with him more privately. "Lanys its me Chloe from the night at the bar." She hoped that he remembered her and the fact that he was alone was a simple effect of timing though the image of the burned man she had see flashed threw her mind.

Lanys started at the loud announcement of his name, and quickly looked up toward Chloe, and once she was closer he seemed to recognize her. "Oh.... Oh! Chloe, yeah! The girl that... That Chandler went to bed with," he said hesitantly, and after a brief pause added; "So, uhhh.... You're a healer, right?"

Lanys words made her blush but thankfully they where low enough that it was kept mostly between the two of them. "Yes thats me and yes Im a healer. I was hoping you could tell me if.. well.. if ... if he made it...." She hopped the young soldier had made it threw the battle and her stomach was twisting in knots as she spoke.

"Oh.... Well, errr.... To be honest, I was... Kind of hoping that you'd know about a few of my squadmates, him among them." The man frowned deeply, his nerves obviously frayed to their limits, and before Chloe could reply he explained; "The orcs summoned a dragon a couple of times, and we all ended up getting seperated when it smashed the tower we were in. I know Kenneth's dead, he got shot by a sniper, and I'm pretty sure that Crendle and Sandra are too since they were caught in the dragon's breath, but... I don't know about Chandler."

Chloe's heart sank even further out of all the wounded she had treated only one might have looked familiar. The burned man she had treated could it be Chandler. Her guts twisted tight giving her slight pain, though after a moment a desperate hope sparked. "Lanys was Chandler caught in the dragon's breath too? I-I treated a severely burned man yesterday he looked kinda familiar." Chloe set her plate down having not taken a single bite. "Ill show you maybe.. maybe you can tell....." Chloe headed off her head looking down her shoulders slumped. "I did what I could but there was so many wounded to treat..."
