Guess there's some confusion with casters and whatnot
To make things easier, here's how to read a character's specialty.
A. Physical attack power
B. Defense
C. Speed
D. Offensive spell
E. Defensive spell
If a character has
ANY D or E at all, they will have spells. The smaller the bar on D and E, the higher level they need to unlock a given spell of that discipline. You'll want to bring Meifang or Gabriela when you first start for some light and nuke/heal, other casters can be used once you give them a level or two. They also have some weird restricts, like Yayoi not able to cast single target heal in battle (can only cast outside of it).
By character breakdown:
Anny - Pure fighter. No spells, huge offense.
Victoria - A little of everything, just no heals. unlock offensive spell early on. I dislike her personally.
Olga - Pure tank. No spells, low-medium offense. Can use heavy armor and weapons.
Gabriela - The priest. supreme healing, massive hp, low-medium mana though. Can wear some heavy armor.
Huli - Speedy fighter. No spell, Great offense and speed, low defense.
Meifang - The mage. Weak everything, supreme nuking.
Yayoi - Omni caster. Decent nuke and healing. Even unlocks some spell earlier then both the mage and priest (ex. cure petrify, dunno if there are exclusive spells), has weird heal restriction like no single target heal during battle.
Lulu - ... speed demon. low heal, low offense, no defense. Strangely she can use heavy weapon and armor.
I recommend:
Front rank: Anny + Huli/Olga (I use Huli)
Back rank: Meifang + Yayoi/Gabriela(I use Yayoi)
Note, Yayoi can still cast heal all in battle, while Gabriela can make a pretty beefy tank (just no offense).
