ピンチ and ビッチ are two completely different words altogether, it's quite clear that the former is used for those working on the machine translation interface.

As already mentioned, the former refers to the heroines when they have been partially disrobed.

Re: Defender of Public Morals: Swordswoman Asagi (Ahriman) 風紀剣士アサギ

Ahriman's posted a scene showing Whip after her capture and taming by Boris (which takes place after the ending cutscene in the game)... Looks like Asagi and crew should've gotten to her sooner:

His description translates to: "Whip, who followed the slave trader, did not come back... The next day a report containing startling video footage was received"

Maybe "In a pinch" or "In trouble" would be more obvious to the English-speaking community? Pinch does seem a little bit... lacking I guess... Can't say I'm a big fan of "Exposed" however.

Please tell me that's only one of the endings, right? I kinda liked Whip... (sadface)

Something along the lines of "dicey" or "trouble" should be serviceable for those relying on an english interface.

The scenario being described is a bonus provided by the game creator. It basically shows what happened to Whip when she failed to arrest the merchant after the scenes at the end of the game.

You can vote for what happens next, but none are particularly "a happy ending", well Whip will be happy either way but you know what I mean...

The gallery mode will definitely make it easier for me to do the capture scenes.

Been busy work work lately, so I haven't been able to translate.

Soon, though. Soon.

So I feel dumb I could not find the place to vote for what happens next, hopefully it's some fun times. Although I think it's the stuff at the bottom of the DL site page but then I don't know how to submit it. No hurry just would like to put my vote in for doing the whip stuff cause that looks rather fun.

Also just noticed this from the last whip pic, so she looks exactly like the angel from his other game that's not the kunoichi one. I have no idea if that's intentional or not but outside of the eyes she looks pretty much exactly the same, although the angel outside of yellowish eyes is essentially just a busy white haired woman.

Well, my original translation WAS actually made for my own benefit... I just realized afterwards I may as well share it, so I'm not particullarly attached to neither my translation nor my solution :)

That actually addresses the problem of clear communication quite well while keeping the original mindset, I'm in favor of "trouble" :D

Shouldn't we put some sort of preposition before the main word though? 'Trouble' is fine but it feels a bit incomplete somehow like 'pinch'. I'm not a native English speaker however, so maybe other people don't get that feeling.

Well, as long as it's not the true/canon ending I'm totally fine with that. It would just seem like such a waste to turn these characters into a slave like that for a true ending.

I think it's just his art style that make them look kinda similar. I don't think he meant anything too significant with that.

You can vote for what happens next in the bonus scene he does on his Pixiv. Donny posted a link to Aariman's Pixiv. Just look for "Answer poll" somewhere on that page.

We are over thinking this.

Without getting into how Asian language works, Ahriman`s intent is to find a quick/simple word or phase to imply the heroine`s current state. The Aphrodisiac (媚) is a good example. With just one word, it`s kind of just calling the state "Aphro." used as abbreviation without spelling out the whole word. But if I just see "Aphro." by itself without additional context, I would be quite confused.

Pinch is simple, and in this context implies that the heroine is "in a pinch". Due to cultural differences, things do not always translate 1:1.

Not much to report. I think I have everything apart from map text transferred over to RPGMaker Trans format though it is somewhat difficult to tell since identical text is combined despite being under different categories. (The Potion item name was listed under skills since there is also a skill named potion.)

Progress continues despite using my old laptop with shitty internet.

Is 'Pinch' the consensus?
If we go with that and there are concerns people won't understand what it means, the merchant does say something to the effect of 'Looks like you're in a pinch. I can help.' so that gives a bit of context.

Re: Defender of Public Morals: Swordswoman Asagi (Ahriman) 風紀剣士アサギ

I'd say no to "pinch". In English it's generally used figuratively instead of for life-or-death situations (unless the speaker is being ironic). It's also generally a set expression, as in "in a pinch", "to feel the pinch", instead of just "pinch", which to me the first thing that comes to mind is somebody being literally pinched.

"Crisis" reflects the low-'health' state much better, as well as other Japanese uses of the English loanword "pinch". Have 5 projects due tomorrow? Crisis. Someone is trying to kill you? Crisis. Imminent capture and rape? Crisis. Etc.

"Critical condition" is more precise for a status condition, but it is quite a mouthful ('though it's often used to translate the 瀕死 yellow-health state in most JRPGs, and the same state is often affectionately referred to as 「ピンチモード」 in Japanese walkthrough wikis or in less serious games).

In general, I don't think it's a good idea just to use Wasei-eigo (Foreign loanwords) wholescale, as the Japanese often use the words they borrowed in a different manner (especially with respect to context) than the original language (same goes for English speakers when they use Spanish/French/Latin loanwords). Examples:

ビッチ usually means slut (promiscuous woman) instead of "bitch", which can have non-sexual connotations and generally implies an abrasive personality even if used in a sexual context.

カンニング means "cheating" instead of "cunning".

スパッツ refers to "leggings" ("tights", and is most commonly used to describe "bicycle shorts"), and not spats, which are footwear.

コンセント is the worse out of the bunch. It means "power socket", not "consent". Some idiot goofed up with "concentric plug socket", that's why.

Re: Defender of Public Morals: Swordswoman Asagi (Ahriman) 風紀剣士アサギ

Another one that took me a little was the phonetic combination "masoanaru", which Whip is referred to in many capture instances. I'm on my phone so I can't give you the kata, but I had to basically break it apart randomly until I found maso (masochist) and anaru (anal).

Only then was I able to translate it to "Anal Masochist". It might be better to call her an ass whore for English translation, much like how "meat toilet" is better translated as cum dumpster.

I have to agree on the "bitch" topic too. it's always struck me as strange that they use that to mean slut.

Re: Defender of Public Morals: Swordswoman Asagi (Ahriman) 風紀剣士アサギ

Huh, really? I always thought 'in a pinch' could be used quite seriously as well. Wiktionary and Google describe it as "In an urgent or difficult situation; when no other solution is available." and "in a critical situation; if absolutely necessary."

So if I'm right, we're discussing whether we should translate 'ピンチ':

Simple; in one word
or
Long; more than one word

Literal, but perhaps not contextually correct
or
Contextually, but deviating from the usual translations

Re: Defender of Public Morals: Swordswoman Asagi (Ahriman) 風紀剣士アサギ

This game is making me pull my hair T_T

I played this a while back but gave up. Tried again with version 1.3 and STILL cant get through... Even with all the guides. I got that map that was nifty. Shows me where to go.. but the doors all stay locked.

I'm in part 2.

The door that unlocks via the middle lever in that control room refuses to open. I've switched it back to red and green multiple times trying to get it to open.

I've gone to Boris to change Asagi's clothes at least 5 times. I've killed literally everything and gone back to the beginning twice. Sigh.

Am I supposed to do something in the lower orc area? Is there another key thing?

Is there an item I have to equip? I'm seriously giving up here.

This game is freaking awesome. But what the heck am i supposed to do??

You may be waiting a while. It's currently through act 1 and a little into what could be considered act 2. It's going to take a while as I'm doing this mostly with machine translators. Currently I'm in the process of transitioning to using RPGMaker Trans instead of directly modifying the game with RPGMaker VXAce for the 1.3 update.
