Re: Evening Starter

hope someone will be able / willing to translate this game one day.

cthulhu myth and game are all about info and text (because fighting usually mean dying). Although here, it's a bit different, but I rarely feel like missing so much of a H-RPG than in this one with what the translating tool can gave back only :/

You are absolutely correct. I can't read Japanese, but I can read Kanji, and what I can understand from it is absolutely amazing in comparison to normal hrpg games. One of the dialogues I have read involve the kid explaining why he's allowed to carry weapons openly on the street. He explained that he has a license from the Japanese government. Then the nun asked about the female MC, and he said the cops turn a blind eye as she's famous and they know her as a weapon carrying hentai. :D

Close, but not exactly correct, assuming you're referring to the conversation accessed from the Help (ヘルプ) -> Game System, etc. (ゲームシステム等) -> ”Carrying arms in the city" (街中でにの武装). The 'kid', or Seijirou*, is a covert government operative (explained earlier when he joins your party), which is why he was your handler and also why he acted as mission control in the tutorial maps. Said agency is the , the Japanese equivalent to the CIA (and FBI, to some extent). He got sent to the field because his higher-ups wants a closer watch on Nosogi Ren (the protag), their unofficial 'civilian' collaborator.

(As for why they needed a tighter leash on Ren, well, as Seijirou puts it, "The Explosion Incident at the Warehouse District".)

(*or possibly Masajirou, didn't pay attention to that part where they gave the pronunciation of his name. Japanese kanji can have different pronunciations, especially when used in names.)

Seijirou is pretty much a modern day ninja (note that traditional ninja were also government operatives in the shogunate era), and his skills reflect this. He can be equipped with handguns, SMGs, and sniper rifles. His melee weapon is a sword.

Seijirou is also pretty snarky, and can't resist taking jabs at Ren whenever he gets the chance. Probably because it's her fault that he got sent to the field. In any case, he's your paymaster (and your comrades' as well), and one of his passives lets him get aid shipments from the government (when you come back on a mission, and/or after an extended wait, can't figure out the mechanics exactly).

So yeah, just think Agent Mulder crossed with Snake Eyes, and you more or less got his character down pat. As for his appearance, I don't think he's that young, it's probably just the standard bishie look. And for why he can carry weapons, well, he's a government agent, of course.

Oh yeah, about that part you quoted, the nun (Yulia,so she's probably Russian or from one of those Slavic countries. Her default gun is also a Tokarev) was wondering why the party (especially Ren) can tote around so many weapons around without being stopped by the police. (It's implied that her Tokarev is both illegal and hidden, and well, her robes helps with the concealment). Seijirou replied that Ren is an unofficial collaborator with his agency, and they choose to "look the other way with regards to Ren" since it's understood that "weapons are needed to suppress acts of terror conducted by dangerous cults". Or at least this is what goes on paper, as he puts it.

(It's implied that the same 'understanding' is extended to your other party members. Oh yeah, that guy talks with a lot of air-quotes. Or reddish-orange text, as the case may be...)

Of course, since they're "just looking the other way", if she so much as dare point her weapon at a regular citizen, her weapon-carrying "rights" will vanish so fast that it would leave skid marks even though they never existed.

And naturally, the front page on the next day's news will be "Gun-toting Nympho Opens Fire in City"!

("Anyone who wears that skirt must be a slut." Man, I love his snark).

Oh and Ren also has some additional special privileges. Apparently somebody highly-placed in the police force has gave word to the police department in the city, so she's pretty much untouchable as long she stays in that particular city. As long as she doesn't act as a trigger-happy nympho, of course.

(This explains the opening scene, where the senior police officer was willing to back off after realizing who she is.)

I can see where your misunderstanding came from though, if you can only read kanji. (Or is it hanzi in your case?)

Re: Evening Starter

Back up to the front page you go!

It's time for a review! XD

Gameplay: 10/10
Unlike most RPG maker game, this game is a 1st person dungeon explorer. I have played a lot of 1st person dungeon games before, but I have never seen one in RPG maker. In fact, I didn't even know it's possible, so I am giving a high score to the dev for breaking from the norm.

There is also a lot of customization you can do to your team - you choose 3 out of 5 characters, and each character has his/her own strengths and weaknesses that balances each other out quite well. There is also a large variety of attack skills, including physical attack, magical spells, holy spells and gun shots. There are 5 types of guns in total (pistol, SMG, assault rifle, machine gun and sniper rifle), and every gun can be customized with parts that increases accuracy/ammo capacity/firing rate/etc. Even your armor can be customized to increase elemental defense/attack.

The only thing I didn't like is the lack of a zoomed out map. During dungeon raid you can see a minimap on the bottom right corner of the screen, but there doesn't seem to be a way to zoom out in order to see the entire dungeon. Given how often I had to backtrack to find previously locked doors it would have been immensely useful. Therefore this game only scored 9.5 out of 10.

Edit: Press A to see the map! Score updated to 10/10. Woohoo!

Plot: 8/10
Boy, this game has so much text that playing it without a text translator would remove most of the fun. The character dialogues reads like a sitcom, and a good one at that. I am not going to spoil the plot, but this is one of the few games where the story actually makes sense. For example, it is actually explained in universe why the MC is allowed run around killing religious fanatics.

The plot however lacks character development. Some of the main characters feel alive, but others seem too oblivious to what's going on around them. There is also almost zero relationship development. I would like to see a possible romance ending.

H content: 6/10
The H content is arguably the weakest part of the game. Some of you will probably disagree with me because the quality of the CG and sex dialogues are superb, but they just don't fit into the game world very well. You can unlock more sex scenes by constantly letting the MC get fucked, so theoretically she is getting more and more "corrupt". However, none of her companions ever seem to notice, and even the mob boss doesn't say anything more than "I liked your video" after the first porno shooting. There's just so much more room to improve.

Attached is the full save file with all CG unlocked.

A-key. It's mentioned in the readme, though I found it by trying keys at random until a map popped up.

Ooh, I'll agree on those points. I'm surprised you got through the game without using the map, because man some of the levels were a downright maze.

It's kinda funny, we talk about how GoR is so over-done, but it just seems weird when there are so many bosses and not a single GoR scene can be picked up. Art and writing for the scenes are good though, so I won't complain too much.

Well, if you lose (total party wipe), you get a text-only scene where the main heroine being ritually sacrificed (lots of stabbing) while she gets to see her teammates getting turned into formless hunks of meat and fed to eldritch horrors. Maybe it's a good thing that it's text-only though. I'm not sure if I want to see it animated/drawn.

...and then Ren wakes up three days later with her teammates alive and wondering why she was dozing off. Turns out it was all a dream... or was it?

DUN-DUN-DUN!

Also, you get a Fool tarot card (+1 skill point) for free, which is probably the game subtly telling you that you suck at this.

(I admit, I did cause a TPK on purpose just to see what would happen.)

Hey, at least it wasn't the 'good ol' days' of dungeon-crawling where there's no minimap and you're expected to draw the map yourself. Preferably on graph paper.

A style of gameplay resurrected by Etrian Odyssey. They do have to courtesy of giving you a comprehensive set of in-game tools to draw maps within the game itself though, so no more fooling around with graph paper. Plus it's quite charming and really adds to the immersion.

But man, fuck the F.O.Es.

Re: Evening Starter

by any chance anyone can upload the updated version? I read that there's a real ending, some balance and bug fixes since then.

I got lost a lot, but I am a persistent bastard. It helps that the monsters don't respawn unless if you leave the floor, so you can run around indefinitely on the same floor once you have killed all the monsters.

I was tempted to draw a map by hand, but having graduated a long time ago I don't have any graph paper lying around.

Re: Evening Starter

Version 1.008 (15-04-26) was spotted on Nyaa today if you're still looking around.

Doesn't look like there's been anything but bugfixes since release, though (according to dlsite).

This has been a lot of fun, I'm about 4-5 dungeons cleared right now and the game hasn't gotten boring yet at all, thanks to the interesting storyline and fun/humorous character interactions. The H is definitely not as integrated into the game though and is more of an afterthought, but the non-H gameplay/story carries it well enough for me.

The things that annoy me currently are that some skills have icons that don't match their element, leading me to whiff skills sometimes, and Mana's grimoires not showing what skills they provide until after use (her 3rd grimoire doesn't even give skills until like 2-3 levels in I'm pretty sure)

A silly thing I saw was that gun attachments seem to work like gem sockets, and there's one really cheap gun grip that gives +10 FP and +10 Quick. You can slap 3-4 of these suckers on a gun and get a pretty nutty stat buff.

A disappointing choice, I recall this game being incredibly dry on content.

This is a game you play for the gameplay / lore, not for the H content itself.

(badmouthing mode ON) Plus it's an easy choice since it had a fan translation already made

As long as the fan translator's being reimbursed for the work they did, that's fine.

This would be at least two games already translated by Farcefield that KG picked up I think?

(Though I guess I don't know how that works for Snow-swept Quest, since I think Farcefield basically donated the translation to the circle so they could put an English version of the game up on DLSite? IIRC.)

Since Farcefield translation is a fan trans, nothing prevent KG to official make a new one.

On the other hands, yes, if they use Farcefield's one without his authorization (free or for a fee), then it's intellectual property stealing if they sell it afterward (which they do since they sell the translated game).

Everything depend on how they deal with fan translator and what they use.

(For Snow-Swept quest, if he donated the translation to the circle, then the default standard law viewpoint his that he renounced all right on it the moment he hand it over the dev - except whatever was agreed for him handing over the translation).
