Sera sighed. "I'm not fond of the idea, but we probably shouldn't stick around here too long. We'll go straight across, but keep an eye out for anyone. We don't have time to go out of our way, but we can help anyone who is close to our path. Let's go."

The girls began walking across the ashen landscape. Before long, they were far enough into the Court that they could barely see any trees. The ashes slid under their feet, and revealed macabre things. A fire blackened skull grinned at the girls as they crested a hill, about halfway through. With no trees, the heat of the day beat down on them oppressively.

They had been walking for a few hours when Sera heard someone groaning nearby. She held her hand up, turning her head slowly, trying to find the source. Another groan, and her eyes landed on a hollow between two rocks. The girls approached cautiously. In the hollow, an adult human lay. He was dressed in metal armor, which had apparently melted slightly due to the heat of the fires. A sword lay by his side, sheath burnt and twisted. One of his legs was pretty much gone. He looked up at the girls, and grimaced. "Of course," he said, glaring at them. "Of course I would be found by subhuman filth."

Sera glared down at the man. "Watch your tone. We could just leave you here to die. Were you involved in the attack?"

"The extermination? Of course. We will drive subhuman filth like you out of the Goddess' lands. Kill me, subhuman. I go to the Goddess' side in glory."

Sera bared her teeth. "Gladly," she snarled, stepping forward. Litu caught her arm before she could draw her sword. "What? He asked for it! He specifically asked for it!"

"Evil bastard or not, I'm not going to let you kill an unarmed man. We talked about this already, Sera. This isn't justice. Killing him won't help anything."

Sera growled under her breath, conflict on her face. Finally, she sighed, and returned her glare to the unpleasant soldier. "Lucky you. You get to live another day. You should get on your knee and grovel at Litu's feet. It's by her grace you aren't trying to breathe through a hole in your chest."

There was a sound in the distance, like a hunting horn. Miara looked around, looking for the source. The soldier began laughing unpleasantly. "Oh, yeah, thank you. Thank you for dallying here. Four more pieces of subhuman filth are about to be removed," he said, still laughing. He pulled a whistle out of his pocket and blew it twice. Immediately, the horn responded. The notes were louder, and moving closer.

The man prepared to blow again, but Sera was faster. Her heel came down into his windpipe. The man gurgled as he tried to draw air through the collapsed passage. Even as he began to panic, trying to force air into his body, he still seemed to be laughing. Sera turned away from him. "Not a word, Litu. We have two choices, people. Run, or fight. Which will it be?"

"Let's set up an ambush. I smell horses, so running isn't really an option. Go!"

The wind shifted as the girls got into position. It brought with it the scent of rain, and thunder echoed off the mountains to the east. Litu smiled to herself, then collapsed into a puddle. The puddle of Litu flowed into a crack in the ground, and she waited there. Miara laid flat on the ground, using the deep ash piles to hide her. She quickly covered herself in ashes, then lay absolutely still. Katt was nowhere to be seen. Sera slipped quietly around the rocks the soldier had been caught in, hiding about ten feet away from them.

They didn't have to wait long. Five soldiers came up, two on horseback. The leader of the group was easy to spot: he carried a gilded sword and his helmet had a fancy plume on it. His armor was also much better than the foot soldier's armor; for one, it was made out of metal. He looked around carefully, narrowing his eyes. He was obviously suspicious of something, but he waved his men forward to look around. Sera's hand tightened around the hilt of her sword.

"Sir. We found Private Joston's body back here. He's still warm. Somebody crushed his windpipe. Can't have been more than 5 minutes ago."

The commander stroked his chin, then looked around again. "I don't see anyone here. So either we're dealing with someone who is incredibly stealthy, or incredibly fast. In any case, fan out and start searching."

Sera frowned. Letting them get separated from each other was less than ideal. She swallowed, grinned to herself, and took a chance. She stepped out from hiding, drawing her sword smoothly, even with her left hand. Immediately, the spirit in her sword flooded her mind with joyous tones, tinged with red as it lusted for the blood of her enemies.

"Yo."

Her distraction worked. All eyes instantly snapped to her. Even though they outnumbered her 5 to 1, the soldiers still looked nervous. Sera made a mental note to make sure she got proper dragonborn style combat training. If the dragonborn reputation was so terrifying that a group of soldiers with a numbers advantage and horses looked nervous at the prospect of facing one, she wanted to be able to back up that reputation.

The captain, at least, didn't seem afraid. "Ah. A subhuman. I should have guessed. Just one? Hardly seems fair."

Sera grinned. "I agree. If you're feeling a little outmatched, feel free to go get more guys. Or I can tie one hand behind my back, if you would prefer. I'm already fighting left handed, but I'm mostly ambidextrous, so it's not really a detriment."

The captain smiled mirthlessly. "Ah. Bravado. Bring me her skull."

The three foot soldiers began to advance on Sera. Her grin widened. "I hoped you would say that."

The ash beneath the other horseman shifted, and Miara sprang out of hiding. Her tail wrapped around horse and rider in one swift movement, squeezing tight. She planted her hands on the ground, twisted at the hips, and with a great shout, lifted horse and rider into the air and slammed them to the ground. She coiled around them tighter, drawing her axes with a satisfied grin as the pinned horse and it's rider attempted to struggle free.

The captain was startled by the rapid capture of his fellow horseman, and turned toward Miara, gaping slightly. From apparently thin air, Katt materialized. Her daggers slammed downward into the back of the captain's neck. He didn't even have time to scream before his head was cut most of the way off. The catgirl backflipped off the captain's horse, then slapped its hindquarters with the flat of her dagger. The horse, already at the verge of panic, screamed, reared and bolted, away from the battle.

The foot soldiers turned at the sound of screaming horse. Litu took her chance as well, bursting from the earth as lightning flashed overhead. She waved her hand at the soldier closest to her, closing her fist tightly. The soldier cried out as his body withered, nearly collapsing instantly. Sera stepped forward and took his head off with a casual backhanded swing.

"It's really nice to be the ambushers for once."

Miara: B! But try not to kill either of them too hard. No sense in killing the horse, and a captive to question who isn't as zealous as the last guy might be good.

Pfffhahahahhaha. The attacker would have to roll a natural 20. And then she would force the attacker to reroll. There's a 1 in 400 chance of Katt getting hit with a normal attack in this battle.

Of course, if she does get hit, she'll be smeared across the landscape.

Sera pivoted, swinging her sword at Foot Soldier 2. Like a hot knife through butter, her sword cleaved the soldier in two from left shoulder to right hip. The man collapsed noiselessly into two pieces. Sera blinked - she hadn't been expecting it to be that easy.

Miara twisted slightly and tightened her coils around horse and rider. She was cautious, though, and tried just to knock them out. The end of her tail went around the rider's throat, and squeezed. He scrabbled at her tail, trying to get it off his neck. Slowly, his struggles weakened until his head lolled back, lips turning blue. At this point, Miara let off. The man inhaled painfully, still laying still. The horse appeared to be going into shock, and had stopped struggling. One of its legs was obviously broken, and its ribcage appeared to be deformed from Miara's crushing strength. If it wasn't already dying, they would need to put it out of its misery.

Katt spun in place, kicking up ash. A moment of obscured vision, and she was gone.

Litu raised her hand at the last remaining soldier. She clenched a fist and spat a word at him. The man gasped in pain, then tottered in place. He looked around, obviously delirious from dehydration, and then collapsed, not breathing. His skin crackled slightly as he fell, like a dried leaf. A few moments later, the first drops of the rain storm began falling.

Miara dragged the unconscious soldier over to Sera. "This one is still alive."

"O-kaaay.... Why?"

"I figured he might be a little more willing to talk than the last guy."

Sera frowned. "I wouldn't think so. He may be higher rank, but I think he's more likely to just be stubborn. Assuming the guy I met back in Daen was related to these guys, I'd guess they're probably not just going to tell us what's going on. The only reason the guy in Daen said anything was because he thought I was going to die there. The last guy probably figured his comrades would come back for him. If these guys are related to the sacking of Crael, they don't leave their own dead behind. The fact they were out searching for him anyway suggests he wasn't far off the mark. So again, he figured we would be dead, so it didn't matter what he said. This guy, though, just watched us slaughter his squad. He knows he's dead either way, so he's not going to say anything."

Miara blinked at Sera. "When did you become an expert on human thought processes? In any case, isn't it better to try than to just kill him?"

Sera sighed. "Fine. Keep a grip on him."

She reared back and gave the soldier a resounding slap. The man's head flopped, and he looked up at Sera blearily. He blinked a few times, the registered where he was. Immediately, his face hardened.

"What was your squad doing here?"

"Lieutenant Chris Notemin, 6789543."

"Did you kill the Faeries?"

"Lieutenant Chris Notemin, 6789543."

Sera looked up at Miara, then back at the prisoner. "What's your name?"

"Lieutenant Chris Notemin, 6789543."

"And that's the only straight answer we're going to get out of him, unless you want to torture him for information."

Miara sighed. "I suppose you are right," she said, tail curling around the guy's neck. A swift movement, a sharp crack, and the man twitched into death as his neck was broken.

"Let's get moving. We're burning daylight, and I'd rather be under the trees when this storm hits properly."

"Actually, being under trees wouldn't be very safe if there's lightning around."

"I imagine it would still be safer than being out in the middle of an ashen wasteland."

"Er.... Good point."

"Cat!"

Katt appeared behind Sera, looking reproachful. "Is it really necessary to call me a cat?"

Sera frowned at her. "How could you tell that I meant Cat and not Katt?"

"Skill. Also you just admitted to it."

Sera chuckled under her breath, then waved the others onward as rain started to fall faster.

The rain was falling in earnest as the girls approached the edge of the forest again. Katt looked positively miserable, and Miara and Litu were the only ones who didn't seem terribly bothered by the ashy mud under foot. Probably because they didn't have feet. In any case, Sera smiled as they reached the trees.

"Phew. Made i-"

All of the girls with hair immediately felt it stand on end. Lightning flashed. And in that flash, a dark shrouded figure appeared. He stood in Sera's path, staring straight ahead at the dragonborn. He took a bubbling, hissing breath, and spoke in sibilant tones, "This is as far as you go, subhumans."

Litu's eyes widened. "Sera! Move!

Sera was barely fast enough. The very tip of her tail was still in the path of the spell cast by the shrouded figure, and she cried out in shock and pain as the very tip of her tail was completely disintegrated by the spell he cast. She spun on the spot, raising her sword. The figure didn't turn to look at her. "You're surprisingly fast. Good. This may actually be fun, then. Get them."

From the trees, 5 soldiers emerged. Each was wearing heavy plate armor, and each was wielding an ornate sword. One of them casually swung his sword into a tree... and severed it completely at the point of impact.

"Well. This should be fun."

Breathless: Litu is immune to asphyxiation and any attack that deprives its target of oxygen.
Healing Spring: The fluid that makes up your body acts like a weak healing potion, healing one ally 1d6 +5 hit points when they drink it. Downside (or upside): it only comes out of places you would expect it to.
Crush: Drop yourself on an opponent, doing 5d10 damage, knocking them prone, and stunning them for 3 rounds.

No Pain: You cannot be stunned by pain.

Basically that. I'm guessing that if the mage falls, the soldiers will be severely weakened.

Small note: Why didn't we rifle the bodies from that group we ambushed? Some coin, perhaps orders, and a nice enchanted weapon or two...Shame to let that rot in the mud.

Yes to the combat and stat ups. For Litu, I'd go with rust though. Would probably be helpful against soldiers. Just saying.

The mage raised one hand toward Litu. Around his hand, rain froze into hail. He lashed out toward Litu... who barely even had to concentrate to negate the spell entirely. The Shrouded Figure looked somewhat surprised at the ease with which Litu had negated the spell, then it dawned on him. The rain was amplifying the Water Spirit's abilities. He grimaced, and began preparing his own defenses.

Katt spun in place. The rain picked up for a half moment, making everyone blink. And she was gone.

Miara lunged at Soldier 3, and quickly wrapped around him, pinning his arms to his side. She twisted her whole body and brought him down, wrapping him tightly. The soldier attempted to struggle free, but Miara wrapped him tighter, twisting slightly to lock his shoulder joint as he tried to push her coils away. His shoulder popped as Miara put a little pressure on him, making his face go white.

Soldier three is a little preoccupied.

Sera smiled, then leaned back and unleashed a burst of arctic wind at the mage. The mage tried to move out of the way, but was unable to move fast enough. Ice built up around him as the wind rushed over his body. He found himself frozen solid, unable to move. "Ha! Too easy!"

The mage glowed for a moment, then vanished from his frozen tomb. He appeared ten feet away, brushing ice crystals off his cloak. "Hm. I was not expecting that."

Sera gaped at the mage. "H-how the hells?"

Litu stepped up, waving her hands. The storm overhead whipped into an arctic frenzy, making the non-furry girls gasp and cover their breasts as the temperature plummeted. The rain turned to hail, then snow. And a mighty blast of wind whipped down from the sky, across three of the soldiers and the Shrouded Figure. The soldiers froze solid instantly, and it was clear they did not survive. The Shrouded Figure, even though he braced himself against the attack, was still hit quite heavily. As the spell subsided, the temperature began to go back up, and the rain turned back into rain, though many degrees colder.

The mage gaped at Litu, who looked a little surprised herself. "I was certainly not expecting that!"

Soldier 4 took advantage of Sera's shock at the sudden powerful magic, and charged in to attack! Sera sidestepped the attack easily, though she was too slow to return the attack. She grinned at the soldier, who was certainly looking rather nervous.
