Re: Pendulum (NOW ON SALE!)

I remember Odin Sphere had some pretty huge bosses, are you gonna do something of a similar scale? The amount of animation involved would probably be pretty taxing if you went for detailed sprites.
Well, it's too soon to tell really, since the game is really early in development (as in on the design stage).

And the O.S. areas, I think they were looping circles dotted with doors that took you to other areas, right? Are you going for something like that or more of a traditional 2D metroidvania megamap thing?
It'll probably be looped areas, just like OS.

Odin Sphere or Murasama are games with an incredible graphic style :). You'll do it alone?
We're a two-man team--I won't be doing any art for the game myself. We actually thought of having the game drawn in similar fashion to OS, but it won't happen, since we want to have the game ready by, say, early next year, which is just too little time to address both quality and scale.

And to be clear - splitting proceeds or profits, etc. isn't appealing to most artists. You'll need to agree on what will be delivered, and a price, and a payment schedule tied to completion of the work. Most artists have been burned or are aware of the risk in agreeing to profit share, and thus shy away. Good luck sir!
Well, we already agreed on terms. I'll definitely stick to my part of the bargain--now let's only hope he doesn't stop responding all of a sudden, like the rest of the guys I've tried working with :x.

profit share can work as a nice bonus but they still need to be paid for their work i reckon

Re: Pendulum (NOW ON SALE!)

It's a collaboration--this time around I'm not just trying to hire someone to do my bidding, so different rules apply here.

Keep checking my blog. I've added the brain behind the art as an author--he'll be posting some really neat stuff over there.

Re: Pendulum (NOW ON SALE!)

I've just starter a pay-what-you-want promotion for the game, so if you want to get the full game for nearly nothing at all, go ahead and visit my blog (signature).

On another note, project 2 is slowly coming along, we should have a demo ready by the end of the year.

The demo and full game are two separate packages. Download the latter from the page you bought the game from, and put the license file there.

Re: Pendulum (NOW ON SALE!)

I don't have anyone to turn to, so with nothing to lose I'm posting here.

For the past year I was having some personal issues, and by the end of it all, I actually went homeless.

In an effort to change my situation, I'm dropping the price for Pendulum down to a single dollar. I've been also working on a new game whenever I could get my hands on a pc, but it's nowhere near ready for me to be able to sell it just yet. You can read all about it on my blog (link below). If you've already read it and know of my situation, please at least mention it somewhere you frequent--getting the word out will help out a ton, I think.

Re: Pendulum (AWESOME DISCOUNT! ALSO, PLEASE READ FIRST POST EDIT)

You know, in the past I would have thought that straight-up asking for money on the internet was futile, but... times have changed. It's the internet age.

Beggars on the street might reach like a few hundred people over the course of a day. They have to combat the negative stereotypes, the opportunity cost of having to sit there all day, and the off-chance they get beat up or mugged. Plus, most people will immediately ignore someone they've identified as a beggar. But on the internet, if you ask for money you can easily reach thousands of people or more. Additionally beneficial is that those people will actually listen to you because they can't identify you as asking for money until... you know, after they've listened to you. You also incur almost no opportunity cost, since all you're doing is taking 15 min to write a post.

I mean if we try to quantify it, the numbers are totally reasonable. If you take the kindest 10% of the wealthiest 10% of a population of 1000 viewers, you've got ten people. Out of ten rich and generous individuals, it's totally possible that 2 or 3 of them will feel empathy for you and be willing to part with a few hours' wage in order to help you out. I regularly see twitch streamers getting donations in excess of $100, and I regularly see "top donator" lists with donations exceeding $1000.

All I'm saying is... don't give up. Life is a meaningless and sorrowful trudge through a bleak and desolate landscape, but it becomes more than that through the connections you make with others along the way. I don't know you, have never spoken to you, and have no way to know if you're lying. But I recognize -- or at least I think I do -- the desperation that has to be roiling through your mind for you to ask for help here. I know that feeling, and I know that it's a terrifying agony that I wouldn't wish on just about anyone. That's all it took to compel me to "donate" what I can to you, which is a heartfelt 20 min of writing a forum post. It's not much, but it's what I have, and I desperately need that time for other things. The fact that there are people out there like me, that are willing to do what they can to help you... it matters. A few of them might also have money, which is great, but more important is that you remember that there ARE people out there like that. We don't do it because we think we will "save" you -- we do it because we want to inspire others to do it too.

I find the greatest respite from the howling winds is the knowledge that, frigid and empty as life may seem, there are others out there in the mist, shielding their eyes from the wind and trudging through the snow, glancing over at you and smiling as you both move onward into whatever lies ahead.

Life is meaningless, but the smile is not.
