Vira didn't know any of them, but one... well, they were all women of childbearing age, almost all night elves, and all naked and pregnant, but one in particular looked faintly like the innkeeper. None were awake, or had been since Vira had awoken, except the one briefly as she had given birth.
“I'm not sure,” Rachel replied. “At least a few hours, not more than six.”
Vira sighed in an odd combination of relief and dismay at the human woman’s response. The good news was that she likely hadn’t already given birth and been re-impregnated in that time frame, but if these creatures’ offspring’s gestation periods were anything like the other creatures in this jungle, it also meant that it wouldn’t be long before she was finally giving birth to her own bouncing baby abomination.
When the last of the Night Elf’s bonds were finally broken, she collapsed to the ground on her hands and knees, just managing to catch herself. Vira began to feel a little better now that she was free, and she stood as her strength started to return. Her energy was still drained, though, and she was starting to feel a little worried as to why. A sudden gasp from Rachel snapped her to attention, and she quickly turned to see what had startled her. Finding nothing but the wall, she raised her eyebrow slightly in confusion before catching something faintly translucent out of the corner of her eye. At the sudden realization of what it was, the source of the odd tingling feeling on her back became apparent.
Vira had thought that it was just residual dirt or dust from the cave wall clinging to her back, but it was obvious now that she was wrong. It seems her ‘encounter’ with the insect-like demons had left her with more than just a swollen belly. Their corruption had altered her very body, causing a full set of insect-like wings, very similar to those of a dragonfly, to sprout from her back. From what the Night Elf could see - and now feel a certain connection to in the back of her mind - there were four them in all, a pair sprouting out of each of her shoulder blades to her left and right. ‘Heh...bet I look like a fairy now...’ she thought to herself, trying to flap them absentmindedly before letting them rest down against her back.
“Vira, I don't know what to do next,” Rachel said, her eyes nervously scanning the cave back and forth. “I managed to sneak in, but it wasn't easy and they watch things going out much more carefully. I could disguise you like me, and maybe one or two others if they could walk on their own, but if you can't fight then I don't know how we're going to escape...”
Vira sighed again, lightly biting her lip as she tried to figure out what to do. “I...I don’t know...” she muttered, her mind conflicted. “I don’t want to leave them here any more than you do, but I’m not sure any of them are in a condition to escape right now...some may not even want to at this point...” Vira paused, lowering her head slightly at the statement. “I think...you and I should try to sneak out of here as best we can...and make our way back to the village to recover. If you want, we can try and bring a few of them with us. You brought my weapons, so I can fight, but...without my powers... If I could use my powers I might be able to get all of us out of here, but we can’t fight a nest of these things by ourselves, especially not in the depleted states we’re in.”
Vira walked over to Rachel and gently stroked her cheek, trying to ease her mind. “But hey, look on the bright side...” the Night Elf said, slowly rubbing her swollen tummy, “I managed to get us a live specimen.”
"I... suppose you're right, I just don't like leaving women here. But if it's that or get caught ourselves, then we'll have to leave them." The mage frowned as the pregnant elf stroked her cheek. "I don't know if you're taking this seriously enough. I mean, I suppose getting a specimen is a minor bright point, but I can't regain energy while I hold illusions. I've been careful, using my magic sparingly, but if you can't use your powers either... well, I suppose we'll see what the entrance looks like. Just don't forget that we lost to two of the demons, even if they did show up at an unfortunate time."
The two women moved quietly through the caves, certainly avoiding getting too close to any of the demons, but also keeping quiet around the women. Most were unconscious, but if one was awake and saw through the illusion, she might yell and alert the demons. As it was, there were a few close calls. The illusion passed for the truth at a distance, but when the demons got closer they seemed to get curious. Both times the girls managed to flee down a side passage and nothing chased them, but if one ever got close enough to smell them...
The only other strong impression that Vira had of the journey was that there didn't seem to be enough. Not enough demons, and not enough women. When they had started the women were dense on the walls, but they'd only seen a few dozen total. Either the poor women died quickly, or there had been nowhere near as many kidnappings as the villagers had claimed, or there were more that the two escaping women hadn't seen. They also only saw the beetles, none of the ones that had impregnated Vira.
Finally, Rachel indicated that Vira should stop. The two looked out at the 'entrance', such as it was. The whole thing was lit by an ethereal blue light, all the walls, ceiling, and floor coated in the glowing material that the beetles seemed to excrete. A much wider cave had been narrowed, at a point, to a gap too narrow for two beetles to pass abreast. And here were the more humanoid sort of demons, near the entrance. A full dozen of them, some smaller then others but all smaller then the ones that had raped Vira, moved in a small group with a pair of beetles, walking toward the entrance. Curiously, the beetles seemed to be holding nude night elves, unconscious but not obviously pregnant. As they went out, a pair of beetles ran limbs and antennae over each demon, spending extra time on the two beetles and the women they held. After the last one was out, a beetle appeared at the entrance, coming in. The two "guard" beetles looked at it, but it got nothing like the examination the ones coming out had.
As Vira's eyes adjusted to the increased level of light - still dimmer then a moonlit night - she saw that there were other demons standing around near the entrance. Bigger humanoid ones, full-sized, half a dozen of them. And two that looked like twisted combinations of the beetles and the humanoids, carrying what seemed, from this distance, to be spears. "Vira... I can't make us invisible, and I really don't think an illusion will be enough, here. I could maybe take a couple out with magic, but it looks bad. You aren't, ah, feeling up to any of your tricks, are you?"
Vira felt her energy reserves, but it was the same as before. Almost empty, none to spare. Which was strange, because it had been half an hour since her rescue, and while she couldn't account for what had been done to her while she was out, the excuse that they might have been draining her no longer applied. She could feel magic in the air in normal amounts, slowly leaching into her. It was just that it was also somehow leaching out at the same rate... she could wait longer and hope that balance changed, but every second the two women stayed in the hive was another chance of being spotted. The only way she could use one of her powers would be to accept that it would knock her unconscious. As long as it didn't take too much energy, she should be able to complete it, but after that she would be out like a light.
Rachel looked worried. "Or any ideas at all? Because I told you I'm not ready to be a mother, and that goes a hundred times over for spending the rest of my life as a giant womb for demons... and I don't see any way out."
“I don't know if you're taking this seriously enough,” Rachel said as the Night Elf touched her cheek.
Vira simply deadpanned in response. ‘Pfft... Says the woman who decided to get drunk and beg me to fuck her fifty feet from these things’ doorstep...’ she thought to herself, but making no further issue of it.
As they crept through the cave tunnels under Rachel’s illusionary veil, Vira actually began to wonder briefly why there weren’t more of these beasts or their female captives. Based on the story the innkeeper relayed to them she’d expected to see most of the walls of this cave practically lined with woman, but she’d only counted a couple dozen or so, total.
When they finally reached the ‘entrance’ to the creatures’ lair Rachel motioned for them to stop, and Vira took in her surroundings. Things looked bad. There appeared to be at least twenty of the insect-like monsters in some variety guarding the entrance, with two of the more normal-looking beetles on inspection duty, just as Rachel had described. The fact that two of the beetles leaving seemed to be transporting a pair of women with them might answer why there weren’t as many here as had been expected...although the idea that there might be more than one lair of these things somewhere wasn’t any more comforting.
“Vira... I can't make us invisible, and I really don't think an illusion will be enough, here,” the human woman said. “I could maybe take a couple out with magic, but it looks bad. You aren't, ah, feeling up to any of your tricks, are you?”
Vira didn’t respond, trying to focus on her energy. ‘Why, damn it? Why is it not restoring?!’ she cursed to herself, feeling her energy being sapped from her body just as quickly as she felt it trying to restore itself.
“Or any ideas at all?” Rachel began again, the worry clear in her voice. “Because I told you I'm not ready to be a mother, and that goes a hundred times over for spending the rest of my life as a giant womb for demons... and I don't see any way out.”
Vira clenched her teeth as a sense of hopelessness began washing over her. “I...I don’t...know...” Vira muttered, her shoulders beginning to slump. “Nothing I cast would be powerful enough to do anything and...and anything I try would just drain the rest of my energy anyway, and I’d pass out on the spot. I...I could try to summon a...a demon...to help fight our way out, but...but I would just pass out again, and I may not even have enough energy to complete the summoning before I did... I just...I don’t know...unless...”
Vira’s eyes widened suddenly as she remember the dream she’d had while she had been unconscious before...specifically she remembered voice towards the end, and what it had said. “Just call, I'll come for you,” it had said. Why...why had it said that? It usually seemed to be asking her for help, but now it seemed to be offering it... Why? Vira shook her head, refocusing her thoughts. She could worry about why later, now wasn’t the time...
Vira took a deep breath and closed her eyes as she began picturing the familiar, yet mysterious voice in her mind again, concentrating on its words and the sound of its voice. She knew this was a long shot, but she didn’t really have any other options at this point... ‘Alright, whoever you are...if you can hear me, and you’re offering me your help...I’m taking you up on that offer... So please, if you can hear me...help us...’
