Re: Random movie talky stuff.

So I watched the movie "Perfect Creature" last night, which is a few years old and another re-imagining of vampires.

About 300 years before the movie begins (which is set in an alternate 1930's or 1940's England... and the military wears WWI/WWII German helmets) Vampires are born into the world through the first break through in genetic science. They become known as the Brotherhood and basically take over the church. Instead of calling them vampires they are termed "brothers" through the whole film. There are no females as it seems to be a part of the genetic experiment that makes it physically impossible to give birth to a female vampire. Their church is set up to basically experiment and find cures for disease to serve humanity, in turn humans offer blood at the church for the Brothers to survive.

It's an interesting premise, and the whole plot of the movie revolves around one particular Brother hunting down another who went rogue. The renegade was the first to kill a human being since their creation so long before. He has also been creating a virus that really fucks up people and essentially makes them into Left 4 Dead type zombies.

The film was actually quite enjoyable despite the slow pace (unlike the last movie I mentioned in this thread) with good characters that developed through the film, and quite interesting visuals. The only thing I wished they did was put a bit more emphasis on the infected outbreak and the quarantine set up in the later portion of the movie, with some sequences that held a lot of promise but never really went anywhere to stay focused on what the main characters were doing.

It isn't very gory at all, some of the worst bits being the hospital scene where people are spitting blood and the vampire bites from the renegade throughout. However I find it fit the feel the film makers were going for instead of drowning the mood with excess gore. What works in other films wouldn't have worked here I think.

It's not scary, and it's not action, I'd call this one a drama/thriller. A slow pace throughout but good characters and an enjoyable plot. I recommend it for vampire fans and anyone who doesn't mind a bit of surreal mixed with their drama or thriller. Also, neat to take a peak at for anyone interested in Alternate History, for while it doesn't explain properly how England came to take on German kit, it does look pretty neat. Especially with the blimps floating through the sky.

Can't recommend it for zombie fans as they play a very small role in the film. But if you are determined to check out anything with zombies, take a peak. Also keep an eye out for "Lifeforce" if ye like zombies.
Twas indeed an excellent movie in my opinion, an excellent re-imagining of a mythical creature. Unlike certain other re-imagining's which must should not be named. I also quite liked the alternate history method they used for it.

Awesome movie, but for some reason it makes me think of El Superbeasto.

Indeed... while the re-imagining was interesting, and actually quite easy to grasp onto, I find it was the alternate history method of the movie that really grabbed me and made me want to pay attention to the entirety.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

While we're on the subject of the church...

Saw "Season of the Witch" today.

...

My friend asked me to compare it to VanHelsing, as far as movies go. My response was "Better than VanHelsing, worse than Mummy 2."

It's...a'ite. Definitely matinee or dollar theater fare. Relies a lot on the "jump" factor for a lot of the scariness, but it's not really a horror movie. It's more of an action movie and yet it isn't. There's certainly a lot of fighting that goes on, but it's not the focus. It's more that the characters are interacting and there's fighting going on around them.

It's odd, too. It has a lot of moments that the average movie-goer will see coming (read: anyone with a brain that's watched movies in the last 10 years) and yet, at the same time, the ending was a bit unexpected. Parts of it, I should say.

As my friend would say, Nicholas Cage was playing Nicholas Cage, though I liked Ron Perlman, definitely. The guy I thought was Jude Law wasn't and Christopher Lee's in it, too, though I didn't realize it was him. I also kept looking at the witch and thinking that she was what's her face from Twilight, but turns out it wasn't her. No aftercredits, either.

So, would I see it again? Eh, for a buck, if my friends want to. Otherwise, it was okay. Not fantastic, but I didn't feel it was wasted money.

It's not a bad movie. It's not a super fantastic I must see it again movie, but if the friends want to hit it at the dollar theater, I'm game.

I'm also bummed we missed the "First look" at Sucker Punch. I was trying to explain the premise to my mother. Visuals would have helped with that.

I never expected anything amazing, I'm expecting some decent popcorn flick entertainment.

For Sucker Punch though, I really want to see that. Zack Snyder is awesome.

Sucker Punch looks like a glorious mess of T&A and violence with a fairly unique setting that allows the director/writer to just go nuts (a samurai wielding a Gatling gun?). Looks like it'll be a fun movie.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

I saw the Green Hornet today.

As someone who's never seen the source material I still found it to be a good movie. The action scenes were a lot of fun to watch and the comedic parts were hilarious. The friends who I went with who read the comics liked it more due to the references they got.

All in all, I'd watch it again, though not in theaters.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Looking forward to that one. Ticket might be a belated Christmas present from the one friend, as we saw the preview together when we went to see Tron.

Also, got my ticket for the live action of Gantz that they're showing at our theater for one night only. Soooo happy I got the day off of work without really needing to ask for it (hooray for copy pasting schedules...) I've been intrigued by the show since we advertised the anime at my old store and if anyone knows if there's an anime soundtrack available, where I can find it. The music, at the very least, was f'ing awesome. I anticipate much violence and angst but I don't think it would be a Japanese action film without it *laughs*

Full report Thursday night or sometime Friday.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Huh. I thought catwoman was always strongly associated with the penguin; but then, that might just be because of the last movies.

Still, Bane is a pretty awesome dude, when he's not in batman & robin.

Yeah, that's just because of the second Tim Burton film. I've always seen Catwoman much more connected to Batman, especially with their strange relationship. It is interesting chemistry between them, and over the years Catwoman's become more of an anti-hero.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Actually from what I remember she always was an antihero, at least in the comics she started out pretty much just like Batman as a vigilante.

From what I've heard of the next Batman, she may not actually be Catwoman as of yet. Since everything is referring to her as Selina Kyle, so it may just turn out that it's before Selina becomes Catwoman.

I'm fine with Bane as long as he turns out nothing like the one in Batman and Robin.

So you want a Bane who is at least somewhat like Bane in more than just physical appearance? :p

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

I think he just doesn't want anything to do with Batman & Robin.

And yeah, dunno if Catwoman herself will be in the movie. Maybe just Selina. time will tell.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Yes having nothing to do with Batman and Robin is a good start, but yeah make Bane actually like Bane in more than appearance and he should be a good villain.
