Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

Minor note: There's a bit of weirdness in water spells. Specifically, there are two level 3 spells, one of which makes the other obsolete.

{C} Icy Cold (Emanation) [Creatures hit by this spell must win a Resistance check against the caster or become Weakened.]

and

{C} Freezing Aura (Emanation) [None]

being the offenders in question. There probably isn't much of a reason to use Freezing Aura when you can obtain the same damage with Icy Cold and inflict a status effect too. >.>

I'm not sure if Icy Cold was intended to hit as a spell one level under it, one was just misplaced, or if it was just an oversight. A cursory glance hasn't revealed any other small oversights like this one.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

There are a lot of screw ups in the spells lists. Like, I think at Force level 4, there's a touch spell and a bolt spell, but the bolt spell does damage as a spell two levels higher. Gonna have to look that shit over at some point.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

Quick derp suggestion for a new skill to strengthen mage-warrior multiclassing and the reverse of it. I intended on waiting until I looked over the rest of the spell list and could make a few suggestions for them but didn't want to risk forgetting to put this out there. >.>

Enchant Weapon (Activated) - For 4 EP, a character may attempt a level 2 casting check in order to add mind/3 damage to their attack. The extra damage is typeless. Requires any talent that grants access to spells.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

It's an amusing way for me to kill time so I made more monsters by looking through the Pathfinder Bestiary 3.

Shaggy demons are obese creatures that occupy high status within their own society. The gelatinous tyrants stand just under seven feet tall and have huge bat wings capable of supporting their tremendous body weight. Their faces have broad-set eyes of a toad and toothy under bites.
When a Shaggy demon reaches the mass required to sub-divide it may choose to create a Slimy or Tarry demon instead of another Shaggy. However these demons are born without armor or weapons.

Slimy demons are more muscular than shaggy demons, but aren’t as lithe or quick as their tarry brethren. They have frog-like heads, similar to those of the shaggy demons, but their constantly darting eyes give them a more feral look. A slimy demon stands six feet tall and weighs around five-hundred pounds.
Slimy demons often serve as shock troops in demonic armies, but they are also frequently put in charge of gathering and keeping slaves. Slimy demons have no magical mind control powers, but prefer to rely upon intimidation and physical threats anyway to manage their slaves and keep them in line.

Despite this difference all tarry demons are strong and agile. Although their bat-like wings appear tattered and useless, they can still fly. A tarry demon stands seven feet tall and weighs around four hundred pounds.

Leather Armor: AV = 5, EV = 1, TP = 30, DU = 3

Description: An incubus in his true form is always muscular and attractive, with long hair and intense eyes. His skin can be of any color, but is always smooth and silky. When not using his wings for flight, an incubus can fold them to drape across its shoulders like a cloak ̶ many decorate both the inside and outside of their wings with tattoos, ink or self-inflicted scars. Incubi stand between six and six and a half feet tall, and typical weigh around two hundred pounds.
When not in battle, incubi serve as counselors, torturers, and companions for greater demons. They are often conjured for similar roles by mortal spell casters, although care must be taken in dalliances with incubi, for they delight in causing pain to their companions.
Like succubi, incubi form from the souls of particularly lustful and rapacious mortals, yet whereas succubi tend to be sutble and methodical about using their charms, the typical incubus is forthright and forceful about his insatiable desires.

Aghashes embody the evil eye, a curse granted by merely witnessing these embodiments of ruin and misfortune. Terrifying, haglike beings aghashes wander deserts spreading doom with their gazes. These wretched creatures hold nothing sacred, taking particular pleasure in bringing vain and arrogant mortals to ruin. Ragged and filthy, an aghash moves with a staggering motion. Its hoofed legs bend like those of a goat giving its emaciated frame and obscene, jerking gait.
All Div exhibit some manner of compulsion, and aghashes’ is to despite beautiful mortals. If given a choice between attacking two different opponents, an aghash always chooses the most physically becoming foe. Such is their loathing ̶ or perhaps, jealousy ̶ that an aghash might stalk an attractive foe, delighting in afflicting them with curses that sap their beauty or otherwise undermining their charm.
An aghash stands between five and six feet tall and weighs about one hundred pounds.

Inventory: Battlemage's Robes: AV = 7, EV = 0, TP = 25, DU = 1

Description: A sensual pairing of seduction and destruction, pairakas embody the corruptive nature of unbridled lust. Pairaka spend little time in their true form when not among their own kind, choosing to cloak themselves instead in alluring forms to seduce potential victims, ruin relationships, and foment obsession. In its true form, a pairaka’s body is a foul landscape of blazing rashes, oozing pustules, and taut blisters suggestive of the corruption it harbors, bodily and spiritually.
Pairakas pride themselves on perversion. They love nothing more than turning lovers against one another or destroying the bonds of friendship. Pairakas feed off this slow torment and savor each broken heart or disappointment. They use lust and sexuality as their primary tools, wielding taboos and carnal appetites to sever once friendly relationships. Pairakas also use their seduction to spread disease, charming victims into physical contact.
Just as all other divs suffer a weakness, pairakas cannot stand the color red. They never wear the color or enter a place painted red, and they always attack creatures garbed in clothe of a crimson hue first.
Pairakas stand six feet tall and weight around one hundred fifty pounds. Their skin color varies widely between individuals.

They foster battle, incite rebellions, and seek heroes to slay, destroying all that which gives common people hope. With their blades in hand sepids often stand at the fore of the foul legions they raise.
Sepids delight in twisting the truth, but while all divs are liars, sepids make themselves predictable by always doing the opposite of what they claim, and wise opponents turn this knowledge to their advantage. Sepids stand thirteen feet tall and weight around fifteen hundred pounds.

Skills: Ranger, Sudden Strike, Bladesinger, Challenge

Spirit Ceiling: 6
Powers: Nightmarish Image, Leech Life, Aspect of Spirit

Inventory:

Description: Bestial stalkers, shira live to hunt and feed, Resembling anthropomorphic lionesses, these creatures use their powerful builds, keen senses, and deadly instincts to tract the proudest mortals and slay the most formidable foes. They embody the deadly nature of the wilds and the dispassion with which beast and light might turn against mortals, delighting in proving to civilized beings how small and helpless they are in the face of the savage worlds.
Shira prefer hunting alone, keeping company with even others of their own kind only long enough to form temporary hunting bands. With a large hunger for intelligent prey, they savor the taste of mortal souls, savaging not just the victims’ bodies but also their vital essences. Despite being the most feral of all divs, shiras sometimes serve as scouts and assassins for div hordes. Such arrangements usually prove to be temporary however, lasing only until the shiras’ savage instincts or lust for the hunt again takes hold.
Shiras never go after an easy kill, and instead target the most obviously powerful of the possible targets. When acting on this compulsion, a shira weighs its chances for survival and the glory of its intended kill, planning its tactics carefully and not necessarily charging savagely forth. Though savage, a shira is also a cunning hunter and might wait weeks for the perfect opportunity to bring down its chosen prey. Most shira stand ten feet tall and weigh approximately twelve hundred pounds.

Description: This winged creature has clawed hands and bird’s talons. Large, glinting eyes and a serrated beak dominate its avian face. Garudas are noble, birdlike creatures that inhabit rugged hills. While they remain detached from humanoid societies, they are impetuous and gallant, often serving as protectors of nearby communities.
Most garudas stand around six feet tall with a wingspan of fifteen feet, and weigh approximately one hundred fifty pounds.
All Garudas possess an intense hatred of naga and other serpentine monsters.

Base Casting: 20
Favored Elements: Entropy

Inventory: Battlemage's Robes: AV = 7, EV = 0, TP = 25, DU = 1

Description: Draped in fine dark robes, this undead creature’s body seems to be made of equal parts bone, leathery flesh, and blood-red smoke. Ghuls are undead sorcerers whose eternal existence was twisted by fate and wrought through the displeasure of a great demon. As if the curse of undead and ravenous hunger, these once human creatures now bear donkey hooves as feet. Despite their horrific undead appearance, this feature shames them the most and they hide their feet from view.
While not directly affected by sunlight, ghuls despise its presence and only move about during the day if forced to by necessity. They primarily hunt at night, sometimes straying far from their graveyard lairs and burial caves in search of fresh prey. The longer a ghul goes without feeding, the more ferocious and primal the creature becomes. A well-sated ghul organizes with others of its kind and lesser undead, tormenting nearby towns and settlements. A ghul involved with this level of organization often has a scattered set of lairs throughout the desert. These allow the ghul to strike far from its home lair and hide again without having to travel during the blistering daylight sun.

Spirit Ceiling: 15
Powers: Dragon’s Breath, Dragon’s Pride, Roar

Inventory:

Description: This sleek, three-headed dragon rears up on its hind legs, wings spread and flames licking out from behind three sets of fangs. This sinister beast threatens entire countrysides with its plundering actions. No friend to its true dragon cousins, a gorynych sometimes threatens green or black dragons for mastery of their lands. A gorynych seeks out young dragons that have only escablished small hordes, killing the rival creatures and claiming their treasures as its own. It dominates drakes and wyverns, but true dragons consider it a repulsive throwback to an ancient line of mutants and deviants.
Motivated by gree, gluttony, and unnatural lust, a gorynych lives to collect treasure, feast as often as possible and chase after human maidens, magically changing its shape to woo them as necessary. Gorynyches are particularly creative with the use of their wide range of low level spells to secure their desires and complete their tasks.
When not busily stalking young dragons in order to steal their horde or selecting maidens to kidnap, most gorynyches search out ancient ruins. There they install themselves as guardians, sometimes even gather whole tribes of primal creatures to act as their servants.

In unlife, they hate and seek to destroy those pious souls who keep their vows. Although easily mistaken for zombies or even skeletons, huecuvas have a spark of intelligence that makes them cunning and deceptive foes.
During daylight hours, huecuva become shrouded in an illusion that causes them to appear as they did in life ̶ at these times, a huecuva might seek to infiltrate society to dwell among those it hates. When night falls, it emerges to see out its prey. Fortunately for the living the typical huecuva has only fragments of intellect remaining so it is usually not long before the undead creature makes an error of judgement or simply reveals itself for the monster it is.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

....Okay, did I miss something?

Also, I've put the monster sheets that I've done so far into an archive and posted it in the character creation thread. It's in the post with the link to the blog in it.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

How do people feel about an EV reducing skill or talent? I was thinking along the lines of this Armor Comfort: You almost as comfortable in armor as you are in your normal cloths. EV -4

Also I was thinking of another talent for those warriors wanting to be skilled in the use of multiple weapon groups. Weapon Master: Requires the skilled with weapon talent. You gain the effect of Skilled with Weapon talent to two additional weapon groups. Can only be taken once.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

Proposed changes to Counterspell abilities (taken from Shoutbox):

Rather than being auto "lol I counter whatever great work of magic you're working", change them to opposed Primary Casting Stat (+ bonus granted by the counterspell) vs Primary Casting Stat of the other caster.

Talents and Flaws can be added as to this as well, as counterspell is proving to be the ultimate end-all counter to casters.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

Modest Proposal:

Counterspell and Devour Magic should lead to an oppossed Mind/Spirit contest between the caster and the counterspeller, to determine whether or not the spell is countered.

The bonus of having counterspell magic is that it's likely to cost less to attempt to block an insanely high cost spell, but the actual edge should still go to the better Mage/Spirit User.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

I agree that it needs to be changed. I'm just here to note that in my opinion it should probably be a simple resistance check, since that's how Seal operates.

Resistance check works. Proposing the following changes then:

Counterspell (Utility) [If the target of this spell attempts to cast a Spell or activate a Power, they are forced to make a resistance check or have the spell automatically fail. The caster of Counterspell gains a +10 bonus to the resistance check. They still spend all costs required to use the Spell of Power.]

Greater Counterspell (Utility) [The caster selects one creature within their line of sight. The next time that creature casts a Spell or activates a Power, the attempt fails unless they make a resistance check, and deals an amount of damage equal to the EP spent on that Spell or Power to the creature that made the attempt. The caster of Counterspell gains a +20 bonus to the resistance check.]

Devour Magic
The character selects a single target, and as they attempt to make a working using their energy, the character steals that energy.
-The character pays X+4 EP.
-The next time the targeted creature attempts to cast a spell or use a power, one of the following happens.
1) If the creature attempts to cast a spell, that spell fails unless the creature makes an opposed resistance check. That creature also takes damage equal to 3 * the spell level, and the character regains an amount of EP equal to the amount payed for the spell. The caster of Devour Magic also receives a 2X bonus to the resistance check.
2) If the creature attempts to use a power, that power has no effect unless they make an opposed resistance check, and the character regains however much EP that creature paid for that power. The character also receives a 2X bonus to the resistance check.
-Alternatively, the targeted creature has one currently active effect on it deactivated.

New Talent:
Stable Magic(Mages and Spirit Users only): +10 to resistance checks against Counterspelling

New Flaw:
Unstable Magic(Must have Spirit or Mage Talent): -10 to resistance checks against Counterspelling

The changes to countering are done. Also, I swapped out the older monster archive for the new one, with a handful of added things. My assistant GMs should redownload that.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

A quick Flaw vs Fetish suggestion:

I suggest simply that the +10 PP damage caused by "Fetish" Mutations be reduced to +8 to match the damage penalty caused by the similar "Lover" Flaws.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me that the damage values are different when they are essentially the same things. For example, what is the "Beast Lover" Flaw if not just a bestiality Fetish? The "Demon Lover" Flaw is essentially just having a Fetish for demons. And so on.

I know that the "Fetish" Mutations can be more specific than the Flaws, but to me that doesn't mean that the damage values should be any different when the two mechanics are essentially the same thing.

Or, I could just take out the "lover" flaws and do what I was planning to do, and turn Fetish into a Flaw.

But then its harder to give characters a bunch of fetishes. Karen, for example, wouldn't be able to have all the fetishes she does at the moment if they were Flaws instead (since we can't choose that many Flaws at creation).

The way it's done now is actually fine, I think. I just thought the +PP damage number should be the same for both.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

it's not difficult at all. you can take as many flaws at character creation as you want, it's just that only the first three(or 4) give extra talents, is all.

That's a good point, actually. I forgot about that.

Nevermind then. Switching Fetish to a Flaw works then (so long as they remain selectable via corruption like Fetishes are now...and the PP damage is +8. <.<).

I support switching out Lover for Fetish.

(And not just because this will make it easier to get Fetish: Krig, Fetish: Jasmine, and allow me to consider Fetish: Fighting without taking up mutation slots. >.>)

I wouldn't want them to be flaws because then you couldn't pick them up through experience mechanically. Unless you asked the GM nicely I guess.

Re: Dark Gate OOC Thread

Actually you can.

If you read in the Normal Mutations section, it says that the "Lustful, Sensitive, Open Soul or any of the "Lover"" Flaws can be taken in place of a Mutation. Given that, you should be able to take Fetish Flaws as your corruption increases just as you can now with them as Mutations.
