I dunno about American trolley carts, but British ones have a lock on them that has a key that links it up with the lock of other trolley's its bunched with. You put a £1 coin in the coin slot to release the key from the other trolley so you can take the trolley and use it when shopping.

Very few stores have them here, but I know exactly what's going on, and I've tried to do that MANY a time myself, so that picture had me cracking up for a while. I always came so close and I knew it was possible but just stopped out of boredom.

There are(or at least used to be, haven't seen any for some time, now that I think about it) trolleys with long enough chain, but the chain is surrounded by a plastic tube. Not very easy to break, but it's still just plastic.
