Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Because someone asked: there are 8 living male dragons still in the world. And it is possible that we get one of them to visit as well. Curiously, living in the same cave as our dragon was before coming, there was also a male dragon, "Slusa Glowfire". Same front name, almost the same amount of kills, and where our dragon kept away from the world for 25 years at a time, so did he, but instead, whenever our dragon was out killing things, he was at home in the cave, and when our dragon was in the cave, he was out killing things.

It is also possible to tame a dragon, but this one has already killed a dwarf before, and will still attack dwarves even when tamed.

Besides that, I've heard a lot on the freakishly fitting personalities, including the original Ensign Redshirt that "Liked red shirts", and a few others commenting that about their characters. The god of dance is also the only dwarven god, the rest are all goddesses. Dwarf fort sometimes has the random generated things all fit perfectly for some reason.

Dwarf fort is actually the real world and we're a simulation.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Leaders log, page 22, 1 hematite, year 238

More digging on that copper vein, and we found another gem cluster. Beardy, which found it, immediately celebrated by adopting yet another cat. On the other side of the vein, being dug by Burrito, there was a gem cluster as well. I'd say we got lucky. To celebrate, the new 'nobles' ordered we don't export harps, or idols. Ok, fine with me, we got plenty of goblin clothes to sell, we can build shops and keep the idols and instruments in the fort. Unfortunately, I also received word that one of Sin's axedwarves got his lung pierced in a sparring match, chances for his survival are very low. Well, the humans should arrive soon, hope there is enough goblin clothing for them.

10 hematite

As expected, the human caravan is arriving.
Not as expected, they were followed by a goblin invasion. It shouldn't be a too big problem, as we have nice big fortifications, and the human caravan guards will help us, but we're still under attack, and they have 2 weapon masters, well, a weapon master and a weapon mistress, and the mistress is using a whip..I don't want to know how she got skilled with it. But besides that, only 8 of them have weapons, so the other 15 won't be a problem. The only thing that may hurt us a little are the 4 crossbows they have...So our crossbowdwarves should shoot them first.

14 hematite

The humans were too slow, although most of their wagons got in, the packanimals behind them got caught by goblins. The humans are fighting, but that's not my problem, I've told them to hurry, and they are right outside our fortifications.

17 hematite

Dear fucking god what is wrong with these idiots? I know those old socks the human dropped are tempting, but DON'T RUN INTO A GOBLIN ARMY. Those that could fight did so, and the others just ran away(Roughly 20 dwarves tried). Surprisingly low losses, 2 humans(Which now refuse to trade because they were too slow to get their lazy ass in), and our Overlord, Host, which took out the strongest goblin weaponmaster, and 6 or 7 others before getting killed. In the end, the result was that the goblins ran, and the traders refused to trade with us. Well, the goblins killed one of their pack animals, so if they won't trade, whatever it was carrying is ours now. Too bad about Host, but at least he died in a fight after losing his weapon and ripping out the goblin leader's throat. I'm sorry to say we need a new captain now. It also seems Burrito got into a mood, and claimed a mason's shop.

We did manage to get a lot of nice loot though.

20 hematite

Clothiw got a new baby girl, congratulations. On my way to congratulate her I checked on Burrito, which started work on his artifact. This is going to be something a real dwarf makes, he got rock, gems and steel, the dwarven materials. I don't know what he's making, but I approve. Besides that, although there was no trade with the humans this year, the caravan leader still wanted to see me for what they wanted next year.

25 hematite

Burrito's artifact, while less impressive then I expected, is still the best artifact in the fort, "Tustzalmonom Kulet Bumal", Malignpaper the Abbey of Worries. A rock grate, worth 136 800 bucks, the main structure is rock, with steel studding, leather decorations, and gemstone bands around it. He also put spikes of clothing on it. On it are images of a dwarf raising a masterwork trumpet(?), trees, and in pink gems, a lot of stars.
Right into the vault, this thing is worth more then all other artifacts together.

17 malachite

So finally, the trader's leader finished talking, and we came to the conclusion they needed more of those rock drums. They also wanted axes(Keeping those), and dyes(Using those ourselves), so, the choice was easy, and I told him he could have all the rock drums he could ever want next year. And that copper vein from before? Well, there was another gem cluster, and then more ore, then yet another cluster of gems, and then a bit of darker rock. The vein itself seems to just keep going though.

-----

Sorry to Host, your dwarf was an idiot, he just really wanted to get that old sock left outside behind the goblin army. Even after I did the 3 ways I know of that stops dwarves from doing going out for that.

As for everyone with a dwarf, a few things to vote about/decide:
1. what to do with Slusa the dragon?
2. how to kill some goblins left in the traps?(A few will be done by gladiatorial combat, but there are more efficient/productive ways. Such as target practise for the marksdwarves, ballista operators, catapult training...)
3. everybody decides for them self, do you want your dwarf to get a special tomb, and if so, what kind of things do you want him/her to get in it?

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Breed the dragon. Breed her good. Give us an army of trained dragons and burn the rest of the world as you conquer it.... Is that possible, the conquering part I mean?
Catapault the goblins at the goblin invasions, also to make sure their covered in oil and burning alive as they fly, tied onto a tar covered rock.
Iron maiden for chip

For Clotiw - A tomb that has gems in it, a basket, and a phallus object.
Also may her daughter be named Minny.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

1) BREED HER.

2) Living, burning ballista/catapult ammo. Also, target practice.

3) Things made of stone, engraved with a fire motif.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

1) If at all possible, I think having Dwarven air superiority by breeding the dragon and using the offspring as mounts would be quite hilarious. Then again, I'm guessing that's not an option, so either breed her so we have little Dragons to protect us, us her as a fail-safe in case we're overrun and would have to move anyways, or we could always make her into weapons/armor/food.

(Though, personally, if it could happen, I'd prefer her to be released somewhere far away. I'd hate to do something horrible to a Dragon :( )

2) If we keep the dragon, use them for dragon food; but, the recruits do seem to need something to practice on that it won't matter if it dies, seeing as they seem to be killing each other recently o_O

3) Bofur: Tomb made of Blue Jade with carvings of Deer decorating it.
Naera: Tomb made of Opal with Coral decorating the outside and a bag for seeds on the inside (the seeds will be placed in along with her, not before her lest they rot >.<)

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

1. we can not use dragonmounts(Or any mounts at all in this version), or send out armies to conquer things. I -think- breeding dragons is possible though.

2. seeds will never rot when in a bag, so I'll put the bag in right away(For Naera)

3. Some of your tomb requests will take a while to get done, but it won't take too long, and we can't get coral here, so that's not an option.

4. Org(Cross grave) and Kharak(randomknight)'s tomb were nice examples of what can be done in a small timeframe. As extreme details are not possible, I kept the workshop on decorating items with bone, and ended up with a few that had fishbone, and a few with flames. An iron maiden for Chip(diagasvesle) is not possible unfortunately. Putting gems in(And specific gems of all kinds) is possible, and I already put a few in my own tomb.

Edit: I think I could also get Bofur's deer engravements, as there apparently is a legend of a deer killing 6 elves and a dwarf.

(Mini update)

Leaders log, page 23, 8 galena, year 238

Clothiw's husband managed to break 4 bones, in 3 different limbs today. And for the logs, he did so while deconstructing the only thing holding up the floor he was standing on so he fell down for 2 floors. He's going to be in bed for a while. On the bright side, instead of having to deconstruct several walkways, they all fell down at once.(With him on it) He was later moved to a bed by George Redshirt.

8 limestone

Exactly a month after Clothiw's husband, a rookie miner manages to make the exact same mistake, and falls down a hole. However, he only breaks an arm, so he will be out of bed relatively early. Besides that, the dwarven caravan should arrive soon, and I hope they are more willing to take the goblin junk then the humans.

16 limestone

George Redshirt shot a kobolt thief today, these usually follow caravans around, so it must mean the dwarves are getting close.
(Later that day)
The dwarven caravan, as expected, all the goblin clothing is getting moved to the trade depot(Made of solid gold to impress them) Lets see what we're getting from them. I've traded about 200% profit worth of goblin clothing to them for half the items they were carrying, including wood, metal, meat and fish, a few armours for Sin and her Axe squad, and most importantly, a stockpile of booze.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Aww :(
Well then, how about engravings of coral on Naera's tomb? Or, if all else fails, when she's laid to rest, hops/barley/ w/e the plant(s) is(are) that give us alcohol in this are planted so as to surround her tomb?

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

breed the dragon.
use goblins as moving target practice or to train the dragon to kill goblins.
A plain tomb with a hammer insignia engraved on the door for Orrin, also place a loaded ballistae aimed at the door and trigger it to fire when the tomb door is opened, as a suprise. if thats possible.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

The ballista is not possible because ballistas have to be loaded and fired manually, but the hammer on the door and ballista in the tomb can work.(And a lot of other traps can work too)

Engravings of coral..I can try, but coral engravings would be very rare, so I'll put a few plants in for her.(almost all plants can be brewed with.) But I'm afraid it would mean other dwarves will frequently enter the tomb to grab the plants for brewing/eating. I can put a lot of the seeds in it though.

Also, we still need a captain of the guard, and I really liked Host's dwarf damnit.

update incoming

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

I think killing off the leader and 6 or 7 others earned him a very nice tomb.

And for the plants/seeds, place them in there just after they die, then either forbid them or lock down the tomb.

1. Keep her until you can breed her, then take the baby dragons and use them as super-tanks against the goblins.

2. SACRIFICE TO THE VOLCANO GODS!

3. Build a tomb that's paved in billon, with a cage at each corner containing a cat each. Link each cage to one lever and an open door at the opening of his tomb. Once he's been committed to his grave, pull the lever. All walls should be engraved.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Edit: also, since cats will follow the owner around, sometimes even when dead, how about we put Beardy's cats in with him? I can set it up so that when the cats die there, they get buried with him.

Leaders log, page 24, 8 galena, year 238

Finally, the traders finished discussing what they wanted of us, and from the entire list they gave, I found only one interesting. Anvils. So I've told them they can get a few anvils from us, seeing as we have 6 laying around. Beardy and Burrito have started digging deeper, and searching for that magma vent, or at least an iron ore. Now, one could argue that goblins are a kind of iron ore when they run at us to die while wearing iron things, but it would be nice to have actual ore.

23 timber

A stonecrafter got in a mood today, and he immediately started gathering the stuff he needed. He's good with stone, so I assume we're getting something made from stone. While checking to see what he wanted the count said hi to me in the streets, and demanded that I ordered the construction of 2 bismuth items, while we don't have bismuth. I told him no, but he just kept going on about it. Eventually I saw no other option then to tell him he would get his bismuth, and as.. "Apology" for me trying to convince him otherwise, a personal pet dragon. Now, it would be a shame if that low quality cage would break and let Slusa loose when the count is sleeping, but it's a risk I'm willing to take, so much, I've even build in a lever he could pull in that case, which would lock all doors out and does something to the cage. And for the ultimate security, more cagetraps just outside his doors...You know, to keep him safe. Besides that, I've got Kharak's tomb almost done, every item in it is decorated with fishbone, as he requested. All he doesn't have yet is a statue decorated with it, but that's going to come later. I also have Orrin's ballista ready, but still need to get the stoneworkers there to smooth the floor and walls.

1 moonstone

Artifact done. The stonecrafter has created a masterfull rock bracelet by the name of "Okirgusgash Tosid Doren", Elderstroker the Armor of Diamonds. It's worth 6,000 bucks, made of two diferent kinds of stone, and has large gems encrusted into it. Less then I expected, but still a valuable item for the vault nonetheless.

15 moonstone

Great, another invasion. This time we're prepared though, I've ordered all dwarves to stay inside, and we can seal ourselves off from the world by simply drawing up 2 bridges. And we have everything we need down here, so we could just stay down here indefinitely. But where's the fun in that? And what about the loot? I've told the military to be ready, and have the ballista ready to make us some goblin kebab. Maybe I should include our friend Slusa's fire breath into our defence, roasted goblin sounds nice. For now, we're just going to do it the old fashioned way.

Goblin invasion:
2 leaders
13 with weapons
17 without weapons

Our forces
4 elite axedwarves
5 ranged fighters
between 30 and 50 war dogs
and 10-20 hunting dogs.
And the ballista positioned so they can't get dodge.(Unless they intend to jump into a deep pit and die horribly)

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Just tell the other dwarves that if they take from Naera's tomb, they have to replace what they took.
Too bad about the engravings. Oh well. I was trying to use what my characters liked as a reference.

Can the dwarves get flamethrowers in this? That would be awesome if they could XD
Ahh, I need to go play Overlord some more... I hope I can get Overlord II eventually :p

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

No personal flamethrowers, but there's no problem with fitting a dragon in a small area and opening a wall to let the fire breath hit invaders.

Also, treebeard, hope you don't mind, but to save billon bars, I made it a tomb with most the floor billon, and a few cat engravements in stibnite.
Neara's tomb is almost done, I'm trying to get her plant engravements on the walls.

Leaders log, page 25, 19 moonstone, year 238

Invasion over, it was a short battle, and I had to personally tell a lot of idiots that the socks the invaders dropped were not worth running into their army for, even if that army never even got to our entrance. Besides that, I'm not sure who was aiming with the ballista, and where he was aiming, but the arrow went slightly the wrong direction. If it would be any more off course the operator would have hit himself with it.

1 leader goblin captured.
1 leader killed.
7 other goblins captured.
18 goblins killed.
2 goblins escaped unharmed
2 escaped with minor injuries
1 escaped with heavy injuries

1 hunting dog lost
1 cat lost
2 war dogs injured
2 civilians injured(Trying to loot things when the enemy is still there is a bad idea)
1 civilian(Weaponsmith) lost

Besides that, the goblin stockpile is getting full, so another is being dug out, and the new practice range will be done soon enough. The cloth and armours of the goblins are paying for the next caravan, and a few armours with the iron, so no complaining there. The leader's clothes alone could probably buy the next elven caravan, and the goblin bones should get us more ammo then we've shot at them.

14 obsidian

2 months since my last entry..But nothing happened so I didn't have anything to report. Now though, the count ordered the guards to arrest one of our novice woodburners for not making his bismuth items. Did he not pay attention to me? Were all the hints too subtle? Or does he really think a pet dragon that could break out and terribly hurt him within seconds is a good thing? Whatever the case, his wife made a similar demand, this time for platinum furniture..Am I doing it wrong? Hasn't she seen the dragon? Doesn't she know what happens to useless dwarves that get the useful ones in trouble? It was a waste of time to make large, high quality chambers for these pompous bastards, but I'll make sure to fix that soon..

4 granite, year 239
A single elf arrived, and went straight past the important people to talk to the count. He later informed me that it was an elven diplomat warning us to stop cutting trees. Elves? Pointy-ears telling us to stop cutting trees? Don't make me laugh, they haven't even discovered fire yet, how can elves be more of a threat then savage, child stealing goblins? Well, whatever, if the elves want to talk, let them come to me. It's not like we have a lot of trees here anyway. Well, their caravan should arrive in a few days, lets see how much they care about their trees when we have goblin clothes. I should also mention Slusa escaped from the count's room, unfortunately, the count wasn't there at the time. Slusa harmlessly walked into another cagetrap.

3 slate

The elves arrived, and we've traded, they had 5 strawberries, and a lot of cloth. So I just got as many cloth as we could get with the goblin clothing.
On a sad note, the furnace operator sentenced to jail by the count died today, strangely though, nobody has seen the count last month, and he went missing half of the month before that. Strange, but he might just be hiding. His wife isn't anywhere to be seen either.

13 slate

A goblin ambush, while weak, they ambushed and killed a farmer. I've send Sin to go kill them, so they shouldn't survive a lot longer.
(Added later: )
At least the fight was outside, I was already feeling sorry for the poor guy that would have to clean that, there is blood everywhere, no survivors on their side. Well, I should order some more coffins for the poor and the pets, the farmer and his dog took 2 coffins, and we have 4 left for those without a tomb of their own.

21 slate

Migrants, lets see who we're getting.

1 philosopher, no idea what he does, but he better work.
1 cook
4 guards
4 royal guards
1 dyer
1 hunter, he's going to be a professional and hunt goblins, marksdwarf.
1 metalsmith
1 woodcutter
1 fisherdwarf
1 brewer
2 recruits(Marksdwarf)
1 mason

Also arrived:
1 child
2 horses
1 donkey
2 mules
2 dogs

We should dispose of the nobles. They're too much of an annoyance. If I were you, I wouldn't have waited for so long.
