Re: WRPGs or JRPGs?

fable is good yes

final fantasy... i liked it up to 10 (even if it was a movie). after squenix took over then it died. although i have to say 7 and 8 have aged quite well... 9 not so much due to its lagyness. and i think the general consensus is that 8 is better than 7, its just that people who like 7 are louder about it.
Oh fuck no, you went there. You fucking went there. FF8 in my opinion is the weakest of the FF's in the PS1 era. I felt that there wasnt much that kept me gripped to the storyline, it didnt make me feel anything for the characters and Rinoa was damn annoying. That being said I loved the junction system, its a shame they didnt use it in any other FF.
I'll admit I'm a fan of FF7 but I'm not like those annoying ones that are like 'OMG! FF7 iz teh roxxors! It has an epic storyline unparralelled by any other game after it!' I just want to punch those fuckers in the face. No, I'll admit it has some faults (Sephiroth having the biggest mother complex ever, Cloud being a whiny sissy boy, Barret the only black character that is active in the storyline, the gramatical errors, the choppy graphics, the almost two dimensional storyline etc...). I will say though that even though the story is lack luster, I enjoyed it. I'll admit when I first played it and Aeris died I cried a bit (I was eleven), the turning points in the plot made me want to continue playing and I loved the materia system, its probably my most favourite form of magic system in any FF. The sidequests and optional bits I enjoyed too. I really loved the chocobo training/breeding, it took me ages to get the perfect gold chocobo, the gold saucer was great too, not just for the prizes from the battle corner but you could replay the submarine and snowboarding mini games from the main story too.
Anyway, if I have to be honest, my favourite FF would either be FF1, 5 or 12.

Re: WRPGs or JRPGs?

One word:
Fable.

/thread

But because I know that won't end the thread, I'm going to add this:

Does anyone else feel like the FF series went to hell after FFVI? Probably not, everyone else I've asked thinks VII is the Z0MG GREATEST FF EVAR, but I tend to disagree. I did not care for VII or later.
Except for the porn.
I feel your pain Megamickel... because I believe that FFVII is the most overrated game ever! Everything that it did has been done before and better. The most common argument I hear is how "original" it was when they killed off a main character? Nobody has ever done that before in an RPG during the middle of the game. Oh wait... That was done years ago on Phantasy Star 2 (or was it three? Speaking of which, I love that game...)

Not to say I hate the game, it's not terrible... I just despise the fanboys/girls. It just gets way... WAY too much hype. I preferred Final Fantasy 1-6 (after they finally were all imported...) but 3 will always hold a special place in my heart. And Chrono Trigger... how could I forget that...

I hope people arent forgetting Luther from Star Ocean 3. He was one badass villain. *My creations are gaining their own awareness? fuck that I'll kill them before they can achieve that!*

Re: WRPGs or JRPGs?

I am voting for Western RPGs based on my own preference. Here's the deal cutters for me. The ENTIRE Elder Scrolls series (not the side games), starting with Arena and continueing with Daggerfall (chock full of nudity too that one), Morrowind and Oblivion. Baldur's Gate (the original two PC games), Diablo series, Fable and most recently Mass Effect. Mass Effect had some of the best interaction and delivery of story I have seen in a game.

I also tend to like the art style more, but that is just a personal preference.
I find that more JRPGs are turnbased, and I prefer the real time that most WRPGs that I've played offer. I also like the character creation I've seen in alot of the WRPGs.

Just my two cents.

Also when I get home... Fable II, Fallout 3, Sacred 2, FarCry 2, and Gears of War 2... oh fuck yes.

Re: WRPGs or JRPGs?

I never did specify my preference.... Anyway I like them both. Now, if they made an RPG that had an awesome storyline like JRPG's and character customisation like WRPG's then I think I'd have so many joygasms that I'd die.

I suggest Mass Effect then. Linear enough to have a good story line... open enough to have a sense of freedom

Re: WRPGs or JRPGs?

Hmmm I like both, if it was a gun to my head pick one or die kinda thing I'd go with JRPGs since I like them a little bit more (Skies of Arcadia FTW), but I'm voting for both anyways :p

(I just hope EA doesn't fuck up Mass Effect 2 >.> )

Re: WRPGs or JRPGs?

SO = pwnage
and on the graphix part I am talking about CG graphics, and Yes Fable is a good game. But for a someone that played dozens of JRPGs that never came out in America, the difference is there. Yes you are right Nunu WRPGs have good games Fall out and Fable are great. But thinking about how many games there are out there that wasn't relesed to the west. JRPGs in the west is just the tip of the stack of great games. Oh and just another note: FF sucks with square!

i wonder what you mean here. as far as i know it was general consensus that the squaresoft final fantasies were the peak of the final fantasy series. I'm not going to go and say they are fantastic games (although i like them myself) but there not bad games and they only got worse without squaresoft. Yuna's hot pants still haunt me to this day.

Keep away from Dynasty Warriors 3 and 4 then. Sun Shang Xiang (one of the only/main female characters in the game) runs around in hot pants, too.

Funny, I never got into the Star Ocean series. I don't think I was too keen on the play style. I've heard they're very good, but just haven't given them a go yet.

*automatic "liek ZOMG someone brought up Dynasty Warriors" pose*

Hmm would Dynasty Warriors 5:XL and Dynasty Warriors: BB count as an RPGs? they do have RPG elements to them >.>

(also... Dynasty Warriors and the Qiao Sisters (Damn Koei for taking out Da Qiao.. if I ever see who thought that was a *mutters about this for hours*) Now where was I? Oh yeah My sister started learning how to use an actual Steel Fan as a weapon because of the Qiao sisters xD)

Re: WRPGs or JRPGs?

Personally I would define most games as RPG's as long as you take up some kind of role in the game. I believe Nunu put that better earlier in the thread, but I'm to lazy right now to find it.

Nunu said:
i was just gonna quote for truth what newbie said but enough people have done that.

GTA is a roleplaying game... actualy most games are role playing games as you are assuming a role. RPG does not stand for roll playing game (unless your into rolls in THAT way) so it doesn't need dice or fancy systems. but you can see most of the aspects of role playing games in san aundreas, then you realise that adding in getting better at stuff doesn't turn an action/driver/shooter into an RPG... it must have been that already to some extent.

at then end of the day you seem to be able to do more with the standard western RPG but japo RPGs get the better end of the stick when it comes to their capability to tell stories easily (not that these stories are good all the time or you don't get that in WRPGs, its just easier). this leaves me personally going through a lot of JRPGs reasonably fast but spending a lot of time on the quality WRPGs like oblivion with guns and pretty much anything done by black isle.

Edit: Thanks Nunu

Re: WRPGs or JRPGs?

DW/SW/WO fan, reporting in.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't classify them as RPGs personally, at least not 5:XL. Haven't played BB *sulk* And I haven't played 6 yet (It's actually sitting next to me right now. I have one more PI to get in Orochi and I'll have done something I never have in a Koei game before: Unlocked everything.) Very cool, though, about your sisters. And yeah, I liked Da Qaio. Xiao, not so much. "The Japanese and their fascination with younger women," as a friend's friend says. I am, however, grateful they let Oichi grow up. I like her much better now than in SW1.

*bounces back on topic, slightly* Speaking of Unlockables, I pose that question.

"Yes, every single one!"
"No, you're f'ing insane!"
"Only if they're worth it."
"Oh, god. The chocobo racing..."

Re: WRPGs or JRPGs?

I'm not sure we can really compare the graphics between the Japanese and Western games. They have two completely different art styles and it comes down to simple preference. They can both be awesome in their glory in different ways. I have heard of people being blown away by some of the Final Fantasies and other such games, but I remember first coming out of the Dungeon in Oblivion and just being amazed at the world, or in Shivering Isles when the butterflies pulled back and exposed an entirely new realm. And though I havn't played it yet (though once I get back you probly won't hear from me cause I will be... a lot) the screen shots from Fallout 3 were simply breathtaking. Bethesda managed to capture a certain beauty in the death and decay of a world. It was breathtaking to me.
