This is a guide that shows easily you can translate text from pictures with smartphone(I used Iphone) + Google Translate program which I guess also exists for Android.

There are many OCR programs and online services but from the ones I used I find the Google Translate program to be the best one + it's very convenient to use. To download program for iphone go to itunes and download it from the store, it's free. After you downloaded it, install it.

You'll have icon on your smartphone like shown on picture 1.

Picture 1.

After program starts set the program to translate from Japanese to English and click on the camera icon shown on picture 2.

Picture 2.

Next thing to do is open up the picture that has japanese text on it, focus the text with your smarthpone and press the big red icon at the bottom to take the picture. Look at picture 3.

Picture 3.

The program will then scan the picture and try to locate any text. After it has marked the text you will be asked to "Use your finger to highlight the text". Use your thumb or any other finger and select the text you want to be translated. After the program has grabbed the text you highlighted it will show them near the top of the screen and below will be the translation. To continue press the blue icon with right arrow on it. Check Picture 4 and 5.

Now you're back in the main part of the application where you can mess with the text you grabbed, see how it's pronounced etc. Check picture 6.

Picture 6.

If you want to send the text you grabbed from the picture to your PC you can use the share function inside the application.

First click inside on the Japanese text and click Select All and after that click Copy. Now click again on the text and click on the right arrow to show more options and there click on Share. Picture 7,8,9.

On the window that opens you can select how you want to share it. For this guide I used the facebook option. So click on facebook icon (Picture 10).

Click inside the empty text field and option "paste" will show up. Click on it to paste the text you copied into the message. After that change the audience so the text sent to facebook is only seen by you. After you changed the audiance to only me you can click post. The text is now shown on the main site of your facebook account and only you can see it. See pictures 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.

Tomo works okay, but it has some troubles sometimes figuring out the Kanji.

It definitely does sometimes. But that also happens in varying degrees with all OCR. I've had luck using kanjitomo with a photo viewer/editor where you can zoom in/out on the text (mousewheel). Getting the text a certain size can do the trick. Or just plain isolating the characters with photoshop for the really troublesome fonts. Time consuming, but doesn't happen that often.

I think I've used that program you mentioned but quickly gave up. Google Translate with Iphone provided me with 100% accuracy. Never had any trouble identifying characters on pictures so far.
