Edit: Also, have we ever discussed how to pronounce Aigis before? I always assumed it was just an engrished abomination for the word "aegis."

Aegis and aigis are the same word. Aigis is just the transliteration from Ancient Greek.

ee-jis is the correct pronunciation. However, without looking it up in a dictionary, most normal people would say ay-jis or ay-gis (just watch LoL/DotA2 streams).

Japanese typically pronounce things as they look:
アイギス = a-i-gi-su = ai-gis

I have never heard anybody pronounce it a-gis like the promo's VA did. That said, you can't just look up "aigis" in a random dictionary to confirm that it is literally "aegis", so I can understand why they'd just guess.

Random pondering on "Aigis":

アイ is katakana for "eye"
ギス is a type of fish
Therefore, アイギス = EYE FISH

Katakana アイ becomes hiragana あい, then kanji 愛, which means love
Therefore 愛ギス = LOVE FISH

(or you could be boring and say "love shield" or something, not that it really matters)

Given that Olivie set precedent for elves having french names, whoever translated this missed the opportunity to name him Laurent. This just confirms that there's no consistency in Aigis' translation which, in turn, indicates there are probably multiple translators without connection among themselves working on this game.

Olivie isn't French and Nutaku said they've asked for it to be changed to Olivia. So, yeah, you could suggest the change to them if you want.

It's just that, as always, it's up to Aigis devs to actually change it...

Just noticed they named Roanna Rowanna... alright then. Really hoping that it pronounced Row-Anna and not Row-Wanna.

Olivie isn't French and Nutaku said they've asked for it to be changed to Olivia. So, yeah, you could suggest the change to them if you want.

It's just that, as always, it's up to Aigis devs to actually change it...

I prefer Olivia as well, I was just suggesting that the translator may have gone with a theme (even if it's not a French name, it's French sounding).

Decided to waste a few hours pulling normal shrine summons.
Aprox. 1,000,000 gold worth (500 pull).

Was a long and painful experience having to pull 1 at a time and sell when my character list was full.

Results in terms rares:
13 silvers
0 gold, platinum, black

Either I used up my days worth of luck pulling Olivie or Shrine hates me.

But seriously, it's a made up fantasy derivative of Rosanna/Roxana, so I don't think it really matters how they spell it.

Although, given Japan's love of all thing France, it wouldn't surprise me if her name is supposed to be derived from France's House of Rohan, who trace their lineage to Brittany's founder Conan Meriadoc (yes, the same place Tolkien got the names... the things I learn).

If it is (and that's extremely speculative), it'd be one of those things that would require far more knowledge than the translator would have.

The simpler answer is that the translator was probably concerned that people would read "oa" in Roana as a single sound, so they tossed a "w" in there to make it clear.

But yeah, to compare with a similar name, Johanna is a legit version of Joanna. Jowanna is an African-American derivative that they use to give themselves their own cultural identity. Then again, Roana is a dark elf, so maybe it makes more sense? I dunno...

How about we just call her ロアナ from now on?

edit: oh, and Lou-Anna/Luanna/Louanna would also another potential way to translate it.
But, yeah, I hope I'm getting across the complexities of translating stuff.

edit2: also, her name is mostly likely from "roan" as in a roan horse (dark with white hair). I suppose that's obvious to any horse fans, which doesn't include me. That just makes the "w" even weirder!

I've been playing since Maribel's event and today I pulled my first Black Gacha from Premium after getting Dorca and Phyllis (woo).

...It's Liana. Given the posts about how she was actually useful in Karma's event did I pull a crap Black and if so, should I even bother with leveling her for this event - or at all? (My other healers are a lv. 40 Dorca and a 50CC41 Alicia).

EDIT: Oh, and I'm very grateful to this thread; I wish I had found it sooner when I first started so I could've avoided a lot of the newbie no-nos (i.e. using duplicate silvers to level)

Well, I would say leveling Liana depends on your access to Black Fairies. If you can reliably farm Tue/Fri dailies to stockpile some, then yeah she'd be a huge upgrade over one of your silver healers. You can get more nit-picky when you have other healers of similar rarity competing for her spot, but an overpriced, underpowered black-rarity healer is still going to school any silver-rarity healer.

It's not that bad result. I think chance to get silver is ~2%. And you never should wait anything above silver from 2k summons, it just leads to disappointment.

I have never got Gold+ unit from it despite throwing lots of money to it.

Just in your party. Same goes for any other unit that gives a passive drop bonus like that.

in this game, there are no blacks that are crap in general, though liana compared to only blacks is sorta on the low end
(i would say the same as the only black i ever rolled, Despara *tear*)

i still don't get why they have liana in EN's gatcha when over on JP's version they never put her in there
i mean sure, she's stronger than the other lower rarity healers, but except for after Skill AW, she feels more like an event black that she is rather than a gatcha black

Finished event. Got all stars. So now... Olivie come to me!!!!

They put Liana in to replace Iris, for some deluded reason. She's literally the worst thing to happen to this version of Aegis.
