I think they're using elements from faerie tales as bases, but they're not going to be the characters from those tales, just characters with similar recognizable features. Of course, this is speculation, but it'd be too much of a coincidence for them to NOT know about the tales and somehow HAPPEN to incorporate similar elements into the characters.
Makes sense. What I find amusing is finding elements of Dead Fantasy in there (like the way the spell was cast, and even the look of it. It harkens back to the haste spell from DF 2, I think it was.) Makes sense, because, well, Monty Oum. Always interested in seeing the different takes that people do on faerie tales, that's for sure.
Monty has said the characters aren't direct representations, but come on. I dare you to say that Ruby looks the way she does only on a whim. And then ya got Wiess's name translation and the lyrics of Mirror Mirror to add to the whole connected. They're not the same characters (naturally) but still, the old tales may lead to some fan guesswork.
Reminds me a LOT of a more srs Hi Hi Puffy Amiyumi. Not that it's a bad thing, I actually enjoyed it :3 Shame it didn't get greenlit.
That talking reminded me of this cartoon. Kinda like Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi mixed with Ed Edd 'n Eddy
