Re: Crisis Point: Extinction - Metroidvania H-game - NEW PUBLIC UPDATE! (Oct. 25th)

So...No Nov25th Release? Then I shall wait for the Xmas release.
There was already an update before I left on vacation, brah. Check back on the previous page.

@Vinceras - It was nice. Definitely glad to be back home, though, lol.

@Slam - I considered giving it damage or knockback of some sort, but I think it would become too useful if I did. As it stands, enemies don't damage you on contact unless that's their only form of attack (slimes, tentacles), and the dodge makes your hitbox so small that it's easy to avoid taking damage. Even just causing knockback to enemies would be really useful. I'll keep it in mind, but I'm probably gonna leave it as is. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Re: Crisis Point: Extinction - Metroidvania H-game - NEW PUBLIC UPDATE! (Oct. 25th)

I understand the reasoning behind the slide mechanic, though my concern is making too many buttons do too many things. There is an elegance in having buttons that are sensitive to context rather than assigning a key to every action. If there was a way to bake that into some existing buttons I would very much prefer that approach.

I couldn't get the custom controls to work with my keyboard for some reason, I don't think it was an issue with xpadder but with the holidays being what they are I've not had time to go back and tweak any settings. I prefer having a controller in my hands rather than messing with a keyboard so I will use a mapping program to translate button presses into key presses. CP:E performs well on an X360 controller, I vastly prefer it to the keyboard as it adds that layer of 'console' to the experience.

Well then, as a player, what kind of setup would you like to have? I spent a lot of time sitting down and thinking about control schemes, and this was by far the best thing I came up with. Melee and slide share a key, all the subweapons require only 2 keys (one to switch, one to use,) the aim, shoot, and jump keys are all pivotal functions that deserve their own keys.. I'm not really sure how else I would cram keys together.

While simplicity usually wins out, if you've got additional functions getting in the way of basic functions, you'll end up screwing up the control scheme. I personally have no problem at all with what you've got going Anon. Only thing I usually want is a way to rebind controls.

Have you thought about double taps at all? Something like forward forward in quick succession being a slide?

I honestly can't see what's so bad about "crouch + melee = slide". The game's controls currently use about as many different buttons as the classic SNES-style controller has. Unless another layer or two of complexity get added on top of what's here, I don't think there's going to be a need to concentrate more functions onto fewer buttons.

Ehhh.. I don't think double tapping would be an effective solution at all. The only time it really works is when it's something like double-tap-to-dash, because the function of double tapping and single tapping are essentially the same - horizontal movement. The functions of running and sliding, however, are entirely different, and I can only imagine a thousand scenarios where someone could end up using the wrong function in an important situation.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't think I'll be changing the controls. The general consensus is that they're comfortable, and you can customize the button layout to whatever you want. I'll be adding gamepad controls eventually too, and like you said, it controls very comfortably on a controller for those who don't like the keyboard layout.

@Slam Sector & Vinceras - Thanks for your input, both of you. Always good to get more than one opinion.

I'm not sure if this has been touched on previously, but what's your position regarding/potential plans for wall-jumping and sequence-breaking, anon? I have to admit, it's one of the first things I tried to do (and laughed at myself afterwards) when I first saw this game. By wall-jumping, I mean as a base mechanic and not like a power-up, ala Super Metroid.

As far as sequence-breaking goes, it's something that I haven't put a ton of thought into, honestly. I've mostly been going in with the mindset of 'if you can sequence break, but it doesn't break the game, leave it.' I haven't been intentionally planning on adding in sequence-breaking opportunities, though. A lot of Super Metroid's sequence-breaking came from abilities like bomb jumping and wall jumping, and I'm not sure if I'll have anything like that in the game - Alicia is distinctly less geared than Samus is, lol.

I've considered adding wall jumping, of course, but I'm not sure if it would fit in with the current design of the game. The more I think about it though, the more interested I am in the opportunities it would provide, so I'll definitely give it some solid thought. Thanks for bringing it up!

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of posts lately. There wasn't honestly that much for me to show off last month; still trying to catch up after Thanksgiving travel threw off my work schedule. The update still turned out well, there just wasn't much for me to post image-wise. This will be the only image-based update until the 25th, when v.06 goes public. I think the link more or less speaks for itself.

Don't forget to view it as an mp4 for optimal quality! (press the ... in the upper right corner, then click 'show mp4 version')

Well you're in luck, there will be cum inflation! I didn't animate it onto the tentacles because I was planning on using it for other enemies later on. I might add an option for the tentacles someday though, who knows?

@Azure - Honestly, I hadn't thought of that, but I like the idea. It would be a simple change to make and it'd be pretty hot. I'll keep it in mind, thanks!

There is no option to change it to mp4. I coincidentally ran into this issue like an hour ago, and couldn't find that option anymore. Maybe they removed it.

Here's a gyazo of your gyazo so that you can see what I mean:

The elipsis in the center just gives you the option of reporting the image.

That's very strange.. I just checked, and I still have the option for mp4. What kind of browser are you using? Maybe it's outdated or something?

Very strange. I'm using Chrome, have either of you tried that? If so I honestly have no idea what's wrong. Maybe I'll have to find a new gif system.
