Re: Akabur Games

The patrons that support him obviously do it out of their own intend. For me, supporting someone with ~$50 per month is way too expensive since I can buy full games for $50.
Yeah, seriously, 50 bucks is pretty close to retail price for a triple-A game. I don't see myself paying that for the *chance* to play an *update* to an indie game. :p

But look at all the rewards your $50/month will m̶o̶s̶t̶l̶y̶ ̶n̶e̶v̶e̶r̶ get you.

  • Full access to the activity feed.
  • V.I.P. membership to my site's galleries. (Contact me via Patreon PM.)
  • A drawing could be sent to you by post once a month. (Stopped doing that for now).
  • Your name in the game's credits.
  • I could draw a personalized forum avatar for you. (Stopped doing that for now).
  • Hypothetically there could be "Agents Only" posts. (Hypothetically!)
  • I will worship you the ground you work on! (This one is true.)
  • A brotherly hug and a handshake.

So you pay 50$ to get about half of the things there. Just like his game promises.

I can't figure out why anyone is support him at a level greater than $1 or $5 at this point. He just basically said he is stopping doing any level reward that requires any amount of work on his part. So essentially, all the Patreon levels are the same.

I pledged at teh $10 and $20 level during Witch Trainer, there was no beta testing, and I don't remember receiving a single thing. I didn't mind, because I assumed the money was going towards a game I would love... well, it was a decent game, but damn was there so much potential wasted.

It really irks me to see level rewards promised and people pledge for those level rewards and the developer go back on his word.

Re: Akabur Games

You can tell he never had any intention of actually following through on the avatar and personal picture rewards because if he'd thought them through, he would have had to put limits on the number available. He roped in about a hundred suckers at those levels right from the off, and that would be way too much work to be going on with, even if he just sketched a boob on a napkin and taped it to a postcard.

Does Patreon even allow creators to restrict feed access by pledge level? It appears to be limited to public and patrons only, as I've never seen any other creator try to tier feed access. If Patreon has that feature, Akabur doesn't seem to know how to use it.

Yes, it does. When you create a post, you can select public, patrons only, $1 and greater, $5 and greater, and so on. The selections are based on your settings I believe, at least they match up on my Patreon.

When you create a post on a Patron level higher than certain pledges, I think it might ONLY show up for those Patrons. I'm not 100% sure on this, but when I released the final prologue on Patreon for $10 or greater initially, I got a message from a supporter saying they received an email that a post was made, but when they went to Patreon, it showed no new post. That is just speculation though, I do know that you can set each post to vary by support level.

You got over 5k dollar on patreon too didn't you? (including my pledge)
Even though you never released a work before that people still trusted you.
Akabur may be a lazy fuck but he has created really great stuff in the past and most people are convinced he will release equally good games in the future.
As much as people hate Akabur.... His art is incredibly good and nearly untouchable.

Akabur has lost a lot of trust with how he has managed everything lately, and that's dangerous, sure his art is good, but lose the trust of the people who support you, you may never recover it again.

I would say Princess Trainer Gold could be Akabur's opportunity to make more cash, or the last nail in his coffin.

Yummy does his by major update, rather than monthly, though. So it could be monthly or every six months, or who knows how often that you get charged, depending on what goals he sets and how quickly the work gets done. So that's one way to garner a little trust. At least he gets paid the same if he has to stretch three months of work to a year, or he gets nothing if the project just vanishes because he can't pull himself away from the PS4 long enough to get anything done.

The thing you have to realize is that if Akabur was operating under his old model with Hentai United, the only issue with WT would have been that it was light on art and not worth the price of admission for a month by itself. And while people might be impatiently waiting for the PT update, they wouldn't be concerned they're being taken to the cleaners in the meanwhile. This isn't exclusively about whether or not his art is good or whether or not he can eventually release a game that has a beginning and an ending and is finished halfway or more.

If you look at his Milestone Goals they're all about what he can get himself with the money, aside from one or two that required him to do things he'd have to do anyway, and one that he never followed through on. We've already addressed how his Pledge Levels are either meaningless gestures or broken promises. The one game he's released since starting Patreon was under-delivered and over-promised, and his games prior to that fall under the same heading. He has to be very careful that PT:GE lives up to the hype he's fomented, or this history could catch up to him in a big way.

He's running a campaign drive with monthly pledges, and operating in a nether realm between business, charity, and buddy who could use a few bucks and a couch to crash on. Many of the Patreon Creators seem to have problems with this. I think they're most familiar with handling the latter situation, but they want to look credible by imitating successful crowd-funding campaigns. So they promise things they can't deliver, or set one-time milestones like, "I'll send ten lucky winners a personalized drawing", for a monthly campaign that reaches $2,000/month. It could be deliberately deceptive, but I think it more likely that Creators just aren't thinking something like that through. They don't realize that persuading people to contribute more to hit a monthly level, for a prize they probably won't get is kind of shady. Or that it becomes even more shady that the milestone has no lasting effect, even if their pledges never dip below $2,000/month again. Akabur did all of these things in one form or another, and then never, even once, delivered on any of them that didn't benefit him. That's a bit of an issue.

First, thank you for the pledge. I appreciate it.

My point on Akabur was not that I wouldn't support him, in fact, I still do. But, I was there for nearly the entire Witch Trainer ride, and donated about $90 to the game. Akabur's posts during the Witch Trainer production and the final game were not the same. Sure, everyone will probably ultimately promise a bit more than they can deliver, we are all amateurs here, but Witch Trainer was to me a partially finished game. Akabur's reasoning? That he was pressured to release it early, and that a beta build was leaked. That excuse rung hollow to someone who had supported the game like I had.

My Patreon's success is irrelevant to the equation. Although, if Akabur charged pledges on a per content release basis, that would alleviate many of my issues with supporting him higher than a $1 a this point. He has to re-earn my trust after the Witch Trainer debacle. Just as I would expect you to do if I released a subpar game.

Re: Akabur Games

Random dude sent him 3D renders of Hermione, she's not that good looking IMO  I prefer the 2D version

Most 3D-renders tend to fall into the uncanny valley for me. Especially for something as cartoony as Akabur's style.

Re: Akabur Games

They usually aren't realistic enough to hit the Uncanny Valley for me. What bugs me is that a lot of 3D artists just appropriate or license assets and tweak them very slightly. Then their rendering machine chugs away.

I guess it'd be fine work, if it was just a random girl. His rendition of Hermione isn't even recognizable to me. It's just a vaguely Asian-looking model with bushy hair and a House sweater vest. And he misspelled "Gryffindor", which seems like a simple enough detail that it ought to be easy to get right with any attention at all.

I like 3D ones as long as it's not Custom Girl 3D. Although I didn't mind it at all in Elysium.

But good 2D art beats any 3D for me, especially if it's as good as Akaburs.

He is not paid for the past, but for the future. If he can't deliver future works worth $10K a month, he could have been the best artist around (and I don't think so, he has his own style though), what's the point on paying him for nothing?
