The game is fun (I am not through yet). Though I question the thought process behind making healing items only available for purchase in the first town.
Call me soft or something I kind of don't like seeing the old guy (sry, forgot his name) go around raping the party from DQ3. Can't understand what's going on (I figure it follows DQ4?) so it's possible him raping everyone is the whole plot...

You move around, go in battles and buy gear. There's gameplay with a failure state (everyone dying), so it's a game.
Now you can call it a bad game all you want, since that game was extremely bland and annoying, sadly. But it's still a game at the core.

I've gotten stuck in the second village. The cleric had his encounter with the slime queen. I've talked to everyone including the guy in the upper left and the guy in the sandbox. I fought "big brother" and got him in the party. I bought the new armor and weapons.
I'm playing with Chitrans with Google & Microsoft as my translators, and the translations seem a bit more obscure than usual. I'm pretty sure I've been told to go to the water shrine to save a little girl.
When I try to leave town, the mage tells me we're not finished in the town, that there's something we need to do. What am I missing? Is the entrance to the water shrine somewhere in the town?

I just realized it, but when you stop due to the mage saying you're not done, you can still move forward and leave the village, you need to take the big brother guy to the castle NorthEast of that village and he'll make the two guards let you pass.

Now I'm trying to figure out what to do after the desert town. There's a castle, a town and a tower, but they all turn me around and say they're too evil or too dangerous when I try to enter.
Doh! He must be asking if I'm sure we want to leave the town instead of saying we can't leave.

Got it. You have to talk to the monkey
in the inn basement, then talk to the four people standing still (and maybe the sandbox guy), then you go to the town to the South.

... so i just got to the part where you play as the mage chasing the girl (right near the start)
when i catch her, what do i do?
I beat her, and got a H-scene and a game over, I lost on purpose, and STILL got a game over.
