omg Glacier, I'm having cute head cannons of Chimei discovering different ways of drying leaves and finding different things to brew altogether? Like a rooibos bush or different types of berries currents or other fruit? (wow I know a lot about tea ahahahahahhaa) and even if she can't find the -exact- same process she still keeps trying and somehow finds out really yummy tea types. And also really really bad ones. (maybe she makes tea out of something like poison ivy once or some thing that makes every one sick... or its just smelly... LOL)

Ah yeah, it's time for some weapon pedantry.

Hero's Greatsword

The hero's weapon is actually based on a zweihander- that is, an actual zweihander and isn't just an anime-style BFS. The blade is just over four feet long, but only about an inch and a half wide, and at that size the blade almost looks delicate. It's too long to draw from a sheath of course, so the hero just carries it over one shoulder like you would a polearm. The hilt sweeps upward slightly, and the grip is about ten inches long. The dtraw doll charm dangling off the pommel in Meline's Halloween pic is accurate.

So what about the scene in the blacksmith quest where you threaten the banker with a dramatic sword-unsheathing sound effect? Are you shopping for dresses and flowers with a ginomormous chopper keeping one arm busy all the time? Seems kind of awkward for the guy who serves as party face to be forced to have a weapon half-drawn all the time.

Chimei's Fan

I really didn't want Chimei to have a fan at first, obviously since she had the Simple Bow for a long time, but I eventually realized I wanted Felix to be unique in being a magic-user type with a normal weapon. All the other magic-users have weapons that buff their Magic as well as a small bonus to Attack, and I wanted Chimei to join the club. The problem is that Eastern magic traditions seem to use the same tools as Western magic and staves, wands, and daggers were all spoken for. I considered using paper wards for awhile, but came up with a fan because it's a pain in the ass to think of upgrade items that would work with a stack of paper strips.

The fan right now looks like any other Japanese hand fan, bamboo wanes supporting a solid blue silk flappy surface bit (Wikipedia didn't know the technical term for that part of a fan). It's not actually constructed for use as a weapon, like tessen or gunsen, but in a binch Chimei can whack an enemy with it. BTW, Chimei's first upgrade is going to be a priority for the next update.

The obvious upgrade would be metal vanes. Sharpen it into a war fan. The symbolism of the weapon looking like a harmless decoration but actually being an effective slashing tool is kind of nice. You could also take dragonblood or something and make it into magic ink. Chimei could do some calligraphy, put power characters onto the cloth.

If you want to play up the primal aspect of her magic, use ironwood for a bamboo replacement. Maybe rip off one of the mythological fans that can command wind.

Larelle's Knife

One of Larelle's “things” about her character is that she's actually a lot more robust than the other magic-user-types in the game, and one of the things I wanted her weapon choice to reflect was that she was prepared to throw down on occasion. Add in the sinister side of her personality, and I came up with the ritual knife.

The knife blade itself is a sharply angled spike of metal, like a rondel dagger, about 6” long and etched with runes. The hilt and the inlay of the fuller are inscribed with a brambles and skull design. Larelle probably dug it up out of that tomb she was in, and started using it because it looked cool to her Hot Topic sensibilities.

Dude, you know what would be totally sweet? In the strategy game Dominions 3, priests of blood nations could be equipped with jade knives to boost the power of their blood sacrifices. You could rip off Rokugan too if you made it magical corrupted jade. It'd be pretty easy to just put an eerie green gem somewhere, and the blacksmith could make it into a pommel stone or something.

You could use monster blood here too, just have the blacksmith reheat the weapon, sharpen it into a better combat weapon and then quench it in red stuff.

That noise was clearly the sound of the sword sliding off his shoulder pauldron so he could pose threateningly. And of course he carries it around with him everywhere, he has slaves (or at least Felix) to carrying his shopping for him.

I never really thought of it that way, and it might be a good way to go. Someone actually mentioned on the HHS forum that fighting a metal slime and getting a "Jar of Metallic Slime" to dip the fan into would be cool, and I kind of like the idea.

That's a pretty awesome idea. It's easy to justify, gives a nod to L5R, and best of all, it means that I can have Ino enchant one of the weapons that normally gets blacksmith upgrades so that way you're not cheated out of any Azothium.

The same is true for any of the steel weapons, really.

Got to the end of Forgotten Crypt (though I loathed the maze, I don't understand why any game has any of those) and then got brutally murdered 20 times in a row by the boss. Can't go back either. I do have an earlier save game, but forcing the player to forfeit 30+ minutes of progress since you can't walk away from the forest is downright stupid, IMO.

Shame, since it's a pretty good game otherwise.

Was a bit angry when I wrote that, but I then went back, reloaded an earlier save and continued playing ... and I have to admit it's one of the best Western efforts for a RPG Maker H-game. Lots of content, combat isn't too tedious and there's not million respawns, decent dialogue and some funnies.

I still think you should be able to go back, and was a bit worried when I got one of my party members one-shot in that "missing party" quest but the enemies didn't do that again .. that had the potential of being annoying though.

I really respect you for posting a second time and admitting that, I really do. I'm also really glad you gave the game another try.

I have to admit it's one of the best Western efforts for a RPG Maker H-game. Lots of content, combat isn't too tedious and there's not million respawns, decent dialogue and some funnies.

That's what I'm aiming for! Games like Sengoku Rance and Big Bang Age have really opened my eyes with how an erotic game should work, and I think most gamers who are interested in pornographic games actually want to play a game with porn, rather than porn with a game, and that idea informs all my work.

I appreciate your opinion, but there are balance reasons why you can't leave areas. I guess I just want to say that I hope it's somewhat comforting to know that I didn't make that design choice lightly.

Alright, I think that's a pretty satisfactory explanation. This sort of gleeful tactlessness is one of the reasons I find the hero such a fun main character.

Tangentially, does anyone else have a favorite party at the moment? Currently, I like Hero, Larelle, Elaiya, Chimei. Larelle can take a hit and debuffs enemy attack while doing OK damage, Elaiya is good for single target burst damage, and Chimei has a multi-hit combo with respectable stun chance. Doll and Meline used to be favorites, but then they lost their stun powers, and neither did enough damage or inflicted sufficiently scary status effects to be more than situationally worth it. Yamamaya seemed to miss way too often for my tastes, and that was back when she joined at level 10.

My philosophy is that preventing damage by quickly killing or incapacitating enemies is even better than healing it, especially when you can have healers following the active party for out-of-combat care. The mushroom cave quest was much easier once I started blasting enemies with lightning to stun them.

For me it's Hero, Doll, Meline, Eliaya
But admittedly I am a very poor player!! LOL My first dozen trys playing through were met with a lot for deaths and I've never gotten far enough to buy Cheimei for example. I've also never played with the Time Turner. But I think I should because I'm really bad at the tactics and I want to be able to experience the whole game.
tho I don't think I could ever get rid of Doll, she's a sweet bb angel.

An other tangent: What's everyone's headcannon name for the hero? XD for the first few play-throughs I used 'Rance' as the name. It came up randomly for me the first time so I stuck with it! My two favorites tho are Neko-chan's "Dumbass" and my lady-love's "Docheio" This lady also named Doll as "Dumpster"

My favourite party is Elaiya-Yamamaya-Chimei, because I prefer to play RPGs really aggressively. Although I did the programming for a new party member today who will show up in the December release that I really like how she plays.

Sadly you can't save changes from on update tothe nest at this point since there are many changes happening to the acual infastructure of the game!

I mean you are welcome to try but you might have problems O_O
