Re: Harem Collector

The October Backer Pack is out (+1 bugfix) and there's some neat stuff. I'm actually a fan of HCs sprawling maps, and I like how Ino's quest rewarded you for exploring and reading all the books. Nice to see all those new buildings too.

Also, thanks for the affection number showing now. I noticed that Ino started at 77, which seemed awfully specific. Is it linked to how many exam answers you find for her?

Re: Harem Collector

her starting relationshp level is indeed affected by the number of answers you get

Re: Harem Collector

The fight with the corrupted Mycon was tough, but fun. And getting 3 dark seeds for victory definitely felt worth the trouble.

Doll is saying something about wanting to go see the university at Trust level. Is that linked to an accessible event?

I was checking the rooms in the manor, and Ino doesn't have one of her own yet. Does she sleep somewhere else? BTW, it's neat seeing all the little clues attached to interactable objects.

Re: Harem Collector

I totally forgot to give Ino a room. I'll probably add that later- Serade still needs to have her room and gift stuff implemented, too, which will all probably be done for next week.

Oh yeah, and Doll's thing is tied to her (eventual) love quest, it's nothing accessible right now.

Re: Harem Collector

I really like the game so far, I'd be super grateful for some sort of map though since I get lost every time I have to navigate somewhere specific.

Since you will eventually wind up with 151 girls as I've understood the goal of the campaign, it would be pretty awesome if you could interact with them more, and maybe have an option to be less of a dick to them. Essentially bribing them with gifts just doesn't feel right to me.

Re: Harem Collector

The game keeps locking up after the second arena battle.

EDIT: I had to wait for the other team leave the room and the guy to move in front of the door then advance the dialog so the game wouldn't freeze.

Re: Harem Collector

On october2013_p3 release:
1. Gamebreaking bug, after finishing the clockwork quest I got the "random" scene with larelle and meline, after which the game got stuck on the last image. Reloading an earlier save had the same result, even if I switched who "won" their little competition.
2. Serade does not show up in the Harem menu dialog if you bought the store before buying the condo.
3. Sell all vendor trash function does not sell Azothium.
4. The game installs with 4 replay scenes unlocked before you even started playing.

Also, anyone knows what is the deal with hongfire? its been down for 4 days now

"I promise, my game isn't racist. Now lets talk about enslaving some blacks."

I kid, I kid. Ethnocultural diversity will improve the game. And with all of the unethical slave raids going on, it makes sense that the Middle Kingdom could have developed quite a bit of variety in what people look like.

Still, I'm glad that plantation farms don't seem to be a thing. Question: how racially diverse is the aristocracy going to be? Is gaining title meritocratic enough that someone from a racial minority could become a lord without being a special snowflake?

...Wow, yeah. I totally didn't think of that one. Well, hey, at least you're enslaving all races equally.

I kid, I kid. Ethnocultural diversity will improve the game. And with all of the unethical slave raids going on, it makes sense that the Middle Kingdom could have developed quite a bit of variety in what people look like.
Not to mention it being a coastal country with a large magic school. I haven't done the actual Docks district of Southport yet (obviously) but it and Westcastle are both going to be the big cultural hodgepodge places where I'm going to have lots of fun writing in weird customs and odd cultures.

Still, I'm glad that plantation farms don't seem to be a thing.
Well, I think on occasion someone tries, but on the whole it's cheaper and less logistically problematic to hire labourers. There are lots of unskilled plebs who aren't even good to enough to pass the Slaver Guild's QA in the slums, and the docks area of Southport and Civilian District of Eastfort are going to be very similar economically speaking.

Example: the foresters in Lumberhill. They could have been slaves, but labourers are easy to find and if you don't own them you're not obligated to pay for a healer when a tree inevitably falls on one.

Question: how racially diverse is the aristocracy going to be? Is gaining title meritocratic enough that someone from a racial minority could become a lord without being a special snowflake?
In the Middle Kingdom, the aristocracy is all native to the area and been there for generations. The class system in the MK is fluid to a point, and the nobles tend to interbreed a lot with each other or at most a rich local with a known lineage. However, nobles are only one half of the story- MK merchants can becomes powerful enough to rival the noble families and there's nothing stopping a foreigner from gathering that much power so long as they're not a dirty, dirty Kellosian.

Kellos, being a militant, expansionist empire, is both more brutal but more upwardly mobile. All that is required to become a noble is to be a good enough soldier that the Empress chooses to reward you with title and land, and the Kellos military makes heavy use of both slave soldiers and auxiliaries. Case in point is the Five Heroes of Kellos. Evanie the Sword-Saint is not local to Kellos- she actually comes from the same pseudo-Japanese country Chimei is from. She started life as a slave who was raised in Kellos but taught the fighting style of her homeland, and eventually rose to the highest position possible outside the Imperial family. At least one other of the Five Heroes used to be an auxiliary.

As for the actual Africa-inspired country that the MK will try to colonize in a later episode, I'm drawing from ancient Egypt, Nubia and Zimbabwe for it's tone and customs. This mostly comes from my own interests though, and not merely an attempt at moar diversity- I've thought for a long time that Nubia and ancient Zimbabwe were criminally under-represented in fantasy fiction, and I can't think off the top of my head of an attempt at "fantasy Africa" except for the Conan novels and Quest for Glory 3.

Re: Harem Collector

Even tabletop RPGs tend to generalize Africa-analogues into vague "here be brown people" a lot of the time. I was pretty happy with Pathfinder's Mwangi Expanse, though. It gave you a pretty decent idea of the good and bad aspects of multiple factions, and you could come up with with decent reasons to side with or against colonists, companies, native nations, and so on.

One nation was ruled by a mummified child-king from ages past, who revived to drive off invaders and become a cruel dictator bent on driving out foreign humans. And sure, Walkena is a bad dude. But he isn't as bad as the demonic Gorilla King and the nation of Mzali itself isn't outright evil.

I liked Paizo's Africa much better than their Egypt, though Osirion did make for some fun pyramid-crawls. There's this one crazy fight we had with a sorceress on a big stone see-saw I don't think I'll ever forget.

Re: Harem Collector

You know, the claim that you didn't have enthic diversity before is inaccurate.

You start out at some caucasian-ish country and the mountain pass introduces asians.
Latinos are actually a hybridization of brown asians with caucasians. And the art style used eliminates pretty much all racial distinctions with the exception of skin color.

The process of creating a "race" is that of reproductive isolation of a group of people for a very long time. And when reintroduced (via improvement in travel or intentional mass importing of a population (ex slave traders) they begin homogenizing.

There is no reason you couldn't just say brown people are in that continent way over there where you can't reach, they were never imported into the middle kingdom, and travel tech is such that very few of them ever make arrive here (and those that do, are extremely adventurous). Which would justify adding a couple of them as characters here and there.
1000 years ago in europe brown people were unheard of, and likewise caucasians in africa.

Noted. I'll check that out.

I understand that, and that the context for things like racism is different in fictional settings. But the truth is I have no reason for not including characters with other skin colours, and as a producer of media I feel that it's my responsibility to do so.

Anyway, I haven't been ignoring your bug posts Mr.TTAO. It's just that life came over and kicked me right in the jiggly bits last week and I've been recovering ever since.

No problem, I understand.
I just wanted to make sure you saw it, I wasn't trying to demand you fix it faster :p. I am sure you will get around to it eventually and I can wait until then.

New blog post

Nekochan said:
I wonder about really weird things in the HC universe, like how would a dinner party in the manor go? Poor Penelope struggling to make a nice dinner for like 10+ people every night (based on the current number of recruitable ladies)...Alina and Meline are fighting over seats next to the hero...Yamamaya eating all the things...Doll waiting for the hero to remember to give her permission to eat...Healbot hiding under a table to avoid all the insanity...the blacksmith locked outside because the hero couldn't be bothered to let him in for dinner...

I also imagine that Randi has secret parties at the Eastfort Condo when the hero is staying at the Northmarket manor. Invites all the soldiers. Big ones. Full of sperm. (Too obscure?)

Do you dear blog readers have any “head canon” moments you think occur when the hero isn't out questing? Or maybe while questing?
Lets see...
Larelle thinks Healbot is gonna be the first cute boy she abducts for her vampire castle when her years of service are up because he's so helpful in the library. He thinks her smirking means something decidedly different.

Chimei attempts to recreate the teas of her home with local ingredients, there's generally always a pot or two of something really odd-tasting around the house. If she gets close, she attempts to get everyone to drink some.

If there's a clock, Elaiya opens it up and starts tinkering if she thinks it's a few minutes fast or slow. OH! She probably actually spends time at the creepy clock shop. Awesome.
