A) We were looking to find civilization. We did not succeed. Also, must get to ye next place on our list of travel destinations, and that we are here largely by accident.

Good fight scene, also.

Re: Amarant: Unknown Path

That was awesome! Anyways...

A Tell the truth: That being in the Hazelands was the result of a fight that left you wounded and stranded here. As for being in Brill your objective was to try and find civilization, food, healing, and shelter and you happened upon a sign leading you here, and that you didn't know the blasted place was abandoned nor overtaken by the undead. Also, what Tassadar said about our next travel destination.

A. Just tell her? the truth as far as it's relevant: We came here following the river, found the barn, thought the town to be inhabited and then got jumped by stray undead.

Minor action: Ask that person what her "objective" is.

Afterthought; If she(or he) is busy harassing us, and we're standing there looking silly, what prevents another zombie from nomming on that person's ankles from behind? I'd think there would be more pressing matters than discussing objectives.

Re: Amarant: Unknown Path

Results:

Considering each of the original four votes each has a “second”… then we’ll just mash it all together then.

You’ve just been through a small slice of hell and now, just when you think you could sit for a bit, you find that these monsters need to be dealt with rather brutally, else they come back yet again. You were saved by whoever this person is, but unfortunately they have you held up and are now questioning you. “What is your objective here?” they ask, in a tone that leads you to believe they may be female.

You ponder their question in your mind, weighing the outcomes of answering her or trying to get away. The thought of simply running away is tempting; you’ve been under attack for how long now, and yet another threat presents itself. Then again, you actually have the chance to avoid a confrontation. Unfortunately you have no idea what to say, what might provoke her gunfire. You decide it’s too risky to try and come up with anything; you know barely anything about the world besides what secrets your mind presents you with. Trying to create your own little lie seems far from smart.

You try and get your nerves under control before you speak, only just noticing your hands shaking a bit as you hold them up. Your mouth hangs open as you breath, noticing now it feels a bit dry. You close your mouth and swallow what little moisture is present in an attempt to steady yourself. You then open it again, and speak:

I- I came here looking for food and shelter.” you manage to stutter.

I was thro- … I fell from the train-tracks above into the river and I when I came to I was… I was here, in this place, at the base of a cliff.

You stop for a bit but decide to continue when greeted by only silence.

With nothing to eat I saw the sign to this town and though I could find help, civilization. I didn’t know that this place was… like this. Please, I just want to get to Bayton…

You stop, hoping what you’ve said will grant you your freedom. Is simply coming into this town an offense, or is there something else at hand here? You’re not sure, but all you can do now is simply wait and hope.

You listen, straining your ears for any noise, but are only greeted with the sound of your breathing in the silence. You face outwards down the street; it seems to be longer now… miles even. Your knees lock a few times, almost making you fall over, but you keep your balance, making sure to try and focus on keeping your muscles relaxed and your mind calm. You have no idea what the person behind you is doing or if they are even still standing behind you. Your eyes glance down to your feet and see the devastated skull of your earlier foe. Your shudder as you think about such a wound being inflicted upon you, but find yourself even more concerned about the idea of more these creatures running. You are startled as the voice speak up again, apparently done with their decision:

Pull back your hair and turn your head slightly towards me.” they state in the same firm tone.

You decide to continue following their commands, seeing as you have little choice in the matter.

You bring your right hand over slowly to your head, wincing a bit as the blood-covered glove makes contact. You try to ignore it as best you can and pull the grime-covered strands back behind your ear, revealing the slightly pointed piece of flesh that is your ear. You tilt your head to the side very slowly, wondering if you can get a view of them…

Stop.” You hear from behind you.

It seems that’s not going to work…

You stop, afraid you might have turned too far. You can’t see them and use that fact as a comforting thought, hoping they don’t shoot you simply because they think you may have seen them. You listen closely, hoping to hear something, anything, but are only greeted with more silence. The tension keeps mounting and you find yourself becoming increasingly worried. Then the silence is broken. A simple:

I see.”

After that you hear a bit of shuffling, a series of movements and then you are deafened once again by a loud crack.

Next section will be up later...

Re: Amarant: Unknown Path

Your face contorts as you are hit by the sound, your shoulders tensing at the shock. Oddly enough, you don’t feel the pain you were expecting, only the dull ache in your head. You thought for sure that you would be dead by now, the sight of your ears somehow provoking their aggression. “Why the shot then”? you wonder, shaking your head again to rid yourself of the last bit dizziness.

You open your eyes again, blinking a few times to focus your vision, and almost find yourself turning around. You stop yourself short, not wanting to betray what little trust this person has in you. However, as they speak, it doesn’t seem that will be a problem for long:

Go ahead and turn. I don’t believe you wish me any harm.

You’re surprised, to say the least. At first you thought the fact you were an elf may have sealed your death. Somehow, though, it gave them the assurance they needed.

You turn, still keeping your hands raised as a gesture of peace, and finally get your first look at this individual.

Standing about ten feet away from you is a woman. Her skin is fair and you are almost taken aback by how tall she is; she must be at least six feet in height. Her face, especially her eyes, is sharp, adding an air of keen perception and intelligence to her. Her hair also stands out: a greyish white, almost like that of the mist overhead, slicked back and cut just as it reaches her neck. She appears to be human as far as you can tell, the edges of her ears rounded. However, one detail strikes you as odd, though: two small tusks that protrude, ever so slightly, from her bottom lip.

Her clothing is not quite what you’d expect. Underneath a brown, leather vest she wears a dark blue button-up shirt. The vest itself has a few pouches hanging from it, secured by a belt that is strapped across her waist. Her legs are also covered in brown leather, a pair of dark brown chaps that cover another set of leggings. Her boots also look extremely sturdy, their hard exterior caked with mud and grime. As far as her armaments go you can see a revolver, somewhat similar to yours, hanging of her right hip, and, in her hands, a massive piece of weaponry.

It has two steel barrels side by side, the diameter of each almost a whole inch from what you can see and the length of the barrels seem to be about two and a half feet. No wonder it’s so loud… you think, knowing your revolver doesn’t affect you. The rest of the frame, aside from the wooden stock, seems to be made of some kind of metal, although you can’t tell from here.

As you look down, behind her legs, you can see exactly what prompted her to fire: It seems as she was interrogating you another one of these fiends tried to get her from behind and was forced to take care of them. The area where its face used to be is no longer recognizable; only a bloody, pulpy mass now resides there.

She hinges open her firearm, exposing the back end of the two barrels, and slides two cylinders inside, snapping it shut once done. She then looks back to you, a calm expression on her face, almost as though she’s used to such encounters. You simply stare for a while, unsure of what to say until you are reminded of how she saved you. She doesn’t seem to mean you anymore harm and you stutter out a…

T-thank you, again for saving me before.

You’re welcome,” she responds, little to no emotion in her voice.

You’re about to ask her what her name is, what she’s doing here, or even why this town is the way it is, but she cuts you off as she slings her weapon over her shoulder.

Head across the bridge and take the southwest road to the left to make your way towards Bayton.” She says, pointing down the road you came from earlier.

It should take approximately two and three quarter hours at a moderate pace. You’ll have trouble getting into the city from this side. If you need food or ammunition I can offer only a modest portion of what I posses. If you would follow me then I have a proposition for you as well. Either way, do not stay idle; those gunshots will bring more here.”

And just like that she walks past you, grabs the lantern on the railing, and heads down one of the alleyways leading farther north into the city.

She was rather curt with you, the way she said everything abrupt and as though she were talking to an annoying child. She said the way to Bayton was that road on the other side of the river, but she also did mention that she could part with some supplies and that you may have trouble getting into the city. She may be able to help with both problems, at the very least elaborating on what she said before. She didn’t leave you much to go on and if you don’t act now you’ll lose her, as well as be subject to more attacks from these creatures. She also mentioned something about a propostion. What ever could she request of you here?

What do you do?

Choices:
Decide on a course of action.

Primary Vote:You may choose more than 1... but I cannot promise they'll work in tandem.

A) Follow her.
B) Cross the bridge and continue on to Bayton.
C) Explore the town further.

X) Other.

Z) Minor Action. Available.

---

Minor Actions Explanation:
Minor Actions are small actions you may do in addition to your Primary Vote (A, B, C, etc.). They will usually just provide you with additional information or perhaps, in rare circumstances, an item. If it would cause an encounter or runs the risk of causing general havoc then it's best to put it as an additional detail under primary vote.

Examples are asking someone a simple question, inspecting an object or feature in the environment, checking on or using an item in your bag, or changing some feature on your person. (i.e. Putting your hair into ponytail - See: Sections explained > Appearance)

They may help you, but please, try not to abuse the system. Trying to examine a couple objects in detail may be fine, but picking every item off the shelf in a store can get a bit... tedious.
And as always: I retain the right to reject them however much it may pain me to do so...

My curiosity is overriding common sense.

A. Onwards to the zombie hordes we go!

Just curious, did she fire into the air or something, or at someone we didn't see?

A Follow her and ask for some food and water and ask about her proposition. I doubt we'd be able to make it to Bayton in our current condition anyways, what with barely being able to stand, hungry, and exhausted.

Z Don't forget to pick up your sword!

Yup, I concur. I'm also curious what she's doing in this town to begin with.

I think she relates to you because you are not a human. I'm guessing there is some prejudice in this world.

Re: Amarant: Unknown Path

Results:

Well, now that the sight is back up and I can see what the results are and if there are any new votes, we can finally carry on.

A

You stood in the middle of the road, your eyes locked onto the alley where the woman who just saved your life fled down. She left you with two choices: either come with her and see what supplies she could offer you, or to leave and continue on your way to Bayton.

Continuing to Bayton seems to be the most logical choice. Once there you can probably find some means of progressing to Respeiro, as well as finding some food to eat. Although, the woman did mention something about how you might have trouble getting into the town. She also mentioned how she would be willing to share supplies with you if you followed her. With what you’ve been through, you wouldn’t mind resting for a bit. It seems this woman is more than capable and you won’t have to worry about these things in her company.

You look down the road towards the bridge you came across earlier, then to your clothes, and then finally back to the alley again.

As you think about it your curiosity about who this woman is and what it is she is doing here is what finally convinces you to follow her. What’s more interesting is that she has the skin tone and complexion of a human or an elf and yet a smaller set of tusks not so unlike those of the orc on the train. You’re not sure what her story is, but you intend to find out if you can.

You reach down and retrieve your sword from the ground, keeping it handy in case you run into any more of these deranged brutes, and make your way over and through the alley.

You continue down the alley and upon reaching the end you find yourself on a street not so unlike the previous one. Houses with deserted porches line the street and every other window seems broken. Alleyways separate every building from one another, but some seem to be blocked off by debris or amateur renovations. The mist still fills the air – as if you expected anything different – and continues to limit your sight as you look around.

As you glance around trying to spot the woman, you manage to catch sight of a few figures to your right. They shuffle slowly towards the street you just left, some stopping with confusion as they run into walls and other obstructions. It seems that there are many more of these things throughout the city and the gunshot did, in fact, act a lure for them.

Glancing in the other direction you notice the woman standing near the entrance of another alley. Your eyes make contact and she motions for you to follow. You set off again, trying your best to balance speed and stealth. Upon rounding the corner again you see that she is simply standing there, waiting for you.

Remain covert. Focus on staying silent and minimizing movement. Stay close and follow right behind me”, she tells you, turning back around.

She then continues down the alley, drawing her smaller firearm. You notice her other hand still carries the lantern, the flame now put out.

You begin following her proper this time, keeping right behind her and making sure to watch out for any enemies. The two of you make your way through alley after alley as you make your way to whatever your destination is. You even dip into a shop and use the backdoor to bypass a few more of these fiends. You notice that the shop is completely devoid of any supplies, perhaps picked clean by this woman?

You step out of the backdoor and are greeted with the sight of a stone wall on top of a hill. It wasn’t terribly high, only a scant ten or so feet. You have no time to admire it, however, as the woman is already making her way up the slope. You jog after her and try to ascend the incline, finding you have to use your hands too and almost crawl. You try and bring your feet up but find you keep stepping on your skirt. You reach down to pull it out of the way and almost lose your balance, your hand having to snap at your skirt like a snake to get it out of the way and keep yourself from falling. You eventually manage to tuck it into your belt, revealing a little bit more of your legs than you would like.

You look up and find you are about halfway when you notice that the woman is already at the top. She waits there patiently as you finish the climb and lower your skirt back down, noticing the tears in the cloth are slightly bigger now. You brush yourself off and look back up to the woman, trying to avoid staring at the two protrusions from her lip, and meet her disapproving gaze.

That skirt is impractical; keep wearing it and you will find yourself caught in a most adverse scenario.”

You don’t reply, simply matching her gaze as she looks down at you. You hold it until she turns around and keep walking down the wall. You follow her for about a minute or so until you see a section of the wall that seems to be in disrepair: A gash runs down from the top to about five feet from the bottom, creating a valley in the wall just big enough for someone to get through. You watch as the woman you’re following holsters her weapon, sets the lantern down on top, grasps the edge of the wreckage, and pulls herself up with little effort, planting a foot down on top and standing all in one quick motion. Impressed as you are, a little thought pops up in the back of your mind saying “I’m not about to be outdone!

You approach the ledge and notice your chin pokes just above the bottom of the valley. You grasp the ledge just as she did and bounce on the front part of your feet a few times to get a feel for it. You then flex your fingers and take a deep breath as you bend down and push yourself back up.

You shoot upwards, your head gaining a better vantage as you continue to ascend. At what you feel to be the apex of your jump you bring up your leg up and try to plant your foot on the stone. Unfortunately, your boot collides with the wall nowhere near close enough. Without your foot there to support you, you find yourself tilting forward at the hips, your chest and stomach falling down on top of the structure. Your hips now along the lip of the wall, you find your lower legs dangling. You try and grasp the sides of the wall to pull yourself up and wiggle forward, kicking your legs out in an ineffective fashion to push the rest of yourself up.

You finally manage to shift yourself up far enough that you can set your knee down, eventually pushing yourself up so you stand in the stone gash. You realize the woman has already jumped into the darkness on the other side. You realize now that it isn’t simply an outer wall, but a wall of an actual structure, watching your head and making sure you don’t hit the ceiling as you jump down into the darkness. A little more light manages to come through the hole than the windows to the Blacksmith’s shop, giving this room a bit more light than the other.

You’re about to call out but notice a light bloom forth from the other side of the room. Lantern in hand, the woman stands next to a wooden door.

Come.” she says, beckoning you with her other hand.

You follow, making your way across the empty room, floorboards creaking under your weight. She opens the door and you are both greeted with more darkness. Stepping just beyond the threshold, she raises the lantern up to the left side of the door out of your view. Her empty hand joins the other for a couple seconds and then you notice the glow start to swell. She steps forward allowing you to enter and you see a newly lit torch notched against the wall.

You step further inside as you start to make out shapes in the room: A small mat lies in the corner along with many different books and pieces of parchment. A cabinet is on another side with a few knick-knacks and book on top. A wooden table with a single chair also sits in the middle of the room, a few books and other notes spread among its surface. In fact, you notice that there are few places you can look where there aren’t any books; one or two seemingly covering almost every piece of furniture or place space you can see.

You continue to look around and are startled as she calls you over.

Sit. I will find you some sustenance.

You look over to where she is, noticing she’s lit a few more candles as you examined the place, and realize she means for you to come and take your place at the table. You go over and pull the small wooden chair out, noticing she’s even set a candle down on the table.

You wait a bit, looking around the room, and notice a few more barrels stacked in the corner as well as the desk the lantern was set down on against another wall to your left. Two other doors are on the wall opposite of the way you came in, although they seem to be boarded shut as beams of woods and other supplies and books have been stacked in front of them. A few sparse candles have been lit around the room, giving an orange glow to the otherwise cold, stone room.

She eventually comes back, placing a cup of water, a piece of dried meat, and an apple in front of you.

Eat” She simply commands and then walks away towards the desk with the lantern.

She sits on a high-stool situated at the desk and sets her firearms on top. You watch her as she opens a drawer and retrieves a long rod with fibers attached to it. She goes about taking apart what pieces she can, with various tools and instruments, and wiping them down.

You’re so curious as to her work that you almost forgot how hungry you were, your stomach reminding to eat as you sit there. You pick up the piece of meat but your thoughts still linger on this woman.

You wonder why she’s here, who she is, how she’s survived this long here. Even more curious is what has happened to this town. It obviously wasn’t always like this but how does a town built up as this get to such a state? You glance over at her and wonder if you should speak up.

Choices:
Decide on a course of action.

Primary Vote:

Since I'm pretty sure almost all of you want to eat as well as ask this woman a couple of questions: just pose your questions and suggest other minor actions.
Try to keep it down to ONE question. Well, I suppose two wouldn't be too much, although... she may not answer too many.

Re: Amarant: Unknown Path

What's your name?
Why are you here?
What are those zombies?
What kind of supplies do you have? (food/potions, weapons/ammo, clothing)

I suppose there's little time to waste, thus:

Who is she?
Why is she here?(Interpret as: What are you trying to accomplish?)
What's up with all the zombies?(As many subquestions as possible: Strengths, weaknesses, common factors, ways to attack, how did they get here, et cetera.)
What's notable about the town?(Is it void of supplies, are there hordes of zombies locked in a basement somewhere, is a certain alley a deathtrap, yada yada.)

Minor action: Present that bullet we found in the blacksmith and ask if she has any use for it. Maybe also ask if she knows anything about enchanted/cursed jewelry, since we still have that silly necklace stashed somewhere.

Whoa, the sites back up! Neat.

Since we must prioritize questions...

What's your name? (Give your own as well; no need to be rude!)
Do you have a place to clean, rest up, and a change clothes? (These clothes are impractical and dirty, not to mention the exhaustion)

I agree with Røse's minor action: "Present that bullet we found in the blacksmith and ask if she has any use for it. Maybe also ask if she knows anything about enchanted/cursed jewelry, since we still have that silly necklace stashed somewhere".

Same here, though I might add "what are you?" and "what did you mean about difficulty getting into Bayton?"

My guess is on half-orc, btw.

Re: Amarant: Unknown Path

I’m sorry for the half-post as well as the lack of updates: This week has been a bit heavy as far as the workload goes. Once it’s over I should be able to return to our normal schedule of a full post every 2 (or so) days.

Results:

I cut out any questions that overlapped so that you would each have 2 questions, at most.

Gamefreak:
What are those zombies?
What kind of supplies do you have?

Rose:
What are you trying to accomplish?
What’s notable about the town?

Gear47:
What is your name? (Give your own as well) =
Do you have a place to clean up?

Tomaito:
What are you?

Minor Actions:
-Present the Large Round we found earlier.
-Ask about the necklace we found earlier.

You watch the woman proceed with her work, disassembling the large firearm and then wiping down the parts with a spare piece of cloth. She goes over it again and again, repeating the same motions multiple times to make sure it’s clean. She’s completely focused on her work it seems, ignoring you as you eat. She starts using the thing rod with the barbs attached to it and sliding down the barrel of the gun, apparently cleaning the inside of that as well.

You take a bite of the meat: salty and tough. You take a few more bites and find that it actually does a surprisingly good job of satisfying your hunger. You take a swig of water to balance out the salty flavor of the meat and then turn back towards the woman, thinking of something to say.

So… I wanted to thank you again for saving me.” you say, the woman not responding.

She continues to clean her firearm, remaining unresponsive.

My name is Jacqueline… may I ask for yours?

You continue to watch her, her expression unchanged by your questions and you start to worry that you should’ve stayed silent. Perhaps she still doesn’t trust you. You turn around and go to take another bite of food when you hear her speak up:

Beatrice.

You turn back around, spirits lifted knowing that the only other person you’ve met in this wasteland hasn’t completely shunned you. You see that she’s pivoted on the stool and is now facing away from the desk, her weapon still in her hands as she continues to clean it. Now that she’s come around you’re not quite sure what to ask her next. She doesn’t seem to mind too much, her expression still one of concentration.

Well, Beatrice, thank you for saving me before… but I have to ask: What are those things? I mean, why are they here and, for that matter, why are you? I don’t want to sound demanding, but what exactly happened to this town?

She stops wiping the metal down and turns towards you, making eye contact. She stares at you for a couple minutes, her eyes narrowing a bit as she examines you. You’re not sure what she’s trying to figure out or what judgments she’s making, you just hope you haven’t made her angry somehow.

After about half a minute, her expression finally softens and she pivots around setting the large piece of metal back on the desk, before turning back to you.

So you really are Fae: Only someone with a sheltered life such as that really not know.” She crosses her arms as she leans back against the desk, legs outstretched.

Fae? you think. Raphael used that word; it was the excuse you had for your ignorance before. It’s probably also the reason why Beatrice here left you alive. Hopefully, your ignorance doesn’t betray you.

Yes, I’ve been called that before” agreeing with her, yet not exactly trying to lie, either.

I see. I’ll have to answer your inquiries with a little more depth then.

She adjusts her sitting position a bit, getting more comfortable presumably, and then continues:

I am an artificer, a member of the Artificer’s Guild in Bayton. I, myself, am a Reclaimer, sent here to recover pieces from before the war.

She stands up and walks over to a bookshelf against the wall, scanning the books. She runs her fingers across some of them, trails of dust parting in their wake.

Humans had an innate ability to use magic. After the war this font was cut and the machine that was society grinded to a halt. They didn’t think the other races would rise up, confident their sole ability to utilize the magic that kept everyday life going would keep them in power. Needless to say: It didn’t last.

You continue to watch and listen as she pulls a sizeable tome from the shelf, flipping through the pages as she continues to speak.

The… lesser races at the time rebelled, causing the vast majority of humans to flee north and isolate themselves in their great cities. Anarchy spread for a while, but a simple few rose up and took the reigns of society. The dwarves also had no small part; they figured out how to “capture” the magic the humans once used and contain it within machines, creating such wonders as the train you supposedly fell from.

She walks towards the table you sit at, continuing to skim through the pages.

There was one mystery that was never solved, however: what happened here. A haze of mist plagued the valley in which this town sits. No one knew what caused it or the effects it had, and the people of Brill, as fierce as they were, eventually succumbed to whatever was at work here, the result plainly visible outside this barracks.

She stops as she reaches the table, shutting the massive tome and setting it down. The spine is pointed towards you and you manage to catch a glimpse of the title:

Days of Collapse: An Encyclopedic Guide to The Events During and After The Human Conflict. –R. Cauld.

Beatrice half sits, half leans, against the table.

And that is why I am here: Recover magical artifacts as well as any evidence that may allude to the cause and effect of the mist covering the Paranon Valley, more commonly known as The Hazelands.
