Re: The Forgotten Castle

With the sizzling torch held high, the rain seeping through the sodden thatch of the stable's roof and sizzling on the struggling flame, Rynn quickly pulled her blade free. She kneeled by the horse, trying to ignore the fact that her knee was nestled in a greasy loop of glistening intestine.

Using the sharp edge of steel, she cut away the saddlebags, there was not enough time to lift, hack, or push the carcass of her mount out of the way to get at what was trapped beneath, half her supplies would have to do until morning when hopefully the sun would chase away the monstrosities creeping closer with the fading light.

As the leather material split beneath her cuts, she could hear them, not ten feet away now. Their eyes glinting as drool spilled out from open maws. Even from this distance and the downpour, Rynn could smell the foul smell of rotten meat coming off their skin and breath.

With the saddlebag finally ripped free, Rynn looked up just as the torch began its final sputtering moments. With a shout she tossed the flaming stick out towards the creatures and hoisted the bags over her shoulder. In a dead sprint she ran towards the front doors of the castle as the creatures screamed out in fury as the fire and light crashed in their midst, before finally giving way to darkness.

Almost blind in the sudden onset of black, Rynn relied on her memory, and the gray outlines that slowly emerged. Water ran down into her eyes and along her palms, making the sword slick in her hands, but she kept her grip strong.

The door was just before her, but one of the creature's was scrambling along the wall towards her, so close that its smell almost made her retch. It jumped from the stone blocks with a wild screech that made the knight's ears ring. With a yell of pain, Rynn swung her blade towards it, the cold steel looping through bone as it cleaved the monster's head in two. The body sailed over Rynn's shoulder, the top of its skull landing in a puddle of mud with a slight splash.

Rearing back the knight booted in the doors of the castle, the warm, glowing light on her makeshift campfire spilling out into the night. The other creatures screeched angrily, but grasped hold of the dead one, pulling it from the arc of light, and began to messily devour it.

With a look of disgust Rynn slammed the doors shut and collapsed by the fire, saddle bags beside her. Letting out a long breath she opened them, finding her cuirass and pauldrons within. Those would suit her well enough until morning, though she worried about what other surprises awaited her within.

As she pulled the armour on over her tunic she made her plans.

A) Go back to the kitchen
B) Go up the stairs
C) Go West
D) Go East
E) Stay where she is and wait out the night

I'm going C as well, but couldn't she use a piece of the fire as a makeshift torch?

Re: The Forgotten Castle

Her boot lashed out against the edge of her fire, knocking a piece of flaming wood across the floor, circling in its journey over stone. Enough of it had been jutting out from the flickering flames that it was not entirely scorched and blazing, enough for a grasp. Cutting a strip of sodden leather from the saddle bag she had dragged within, Rynn wrapped a crude grip to make a torch until she could find something better.

Glancing at the various doors, she decided to the west was as good a place as any to start. Quickly crossing the lobby towards the heavy doors, the weight of her armour comforting around her torso and shoulders, she pushed the entrance open and stepped through, hand immediately falling to her sword as she thrust the torch ahead of her.

Soft candlelight glowed over a long table, a chandelier above glittering in the places that grime had not yet settled, yet the table itself was mostly clean save the far end. A woman's corpse was seated in the chair at the head, the rest of the seats neatly pushed in with the exception of the opposite to the corpse which had been pulled out slightly.

With a frown Rynn slowly moved towards the body, holding her light high to illuminate the dark corners of the room the candles refused to touch. The knight found herself checking over her shoulder to see the large paned window at the front, lightning occasionally casting its glare through the glass, revealing the ghoulish monsters outside clinging to the wall, staring in with hungry eyes.

She noticed only one other door leading outwards, near the north end of the room, leading into the kitchens. Only one, meaning the other door she had seen in the kitchen must have led somewhere else. She tucked that information away for later and moved to the body.

Whoever the woman had been, she was certainly not afraid to show herself off. The pale green of decaying cleavage pushed up against a tight corset, bits of skin missing from either the march of rot or some scavenger wandering these lost halls Rynn could not tell. The face was mostly skeletal, and the wisps of remaining hair looked to be only a shadow of what may have been a beautiful mane of dark locks. The skirts beneath the table were slim, and form fitting around the hips and Rynn guessed the rear though she could not see. She hoped that the bulges in her thighs were from the long time the corpse had spent here, and that the woman did not have a higher estimation of her beauty than reality told.

Shaking her head, Rynn looked towards the hands clasped on the table, holding a book down against the light shade of wood. Removing hand from hilt she reached out, but no sooner had her fingers graced the hands holding the tome in place, then a voice called out.

"Do not disturb me," came a velvet smooth woman's purr, forceful and soft all at once.

Hand snapping back to her sword, Rynn looked down towards the other end of the table, and saw the same dead woman, but without the decay. Her hair was a gorgeous mane, her face sharp, angular, yet not without the lines of humour and a hint of mischievousness. She appeared pale blue, glowing softly, as she stared at Rynn.

"Tis only polite," she continued, drumming her fingers on the table, yet not making a sound.

Rynn stared at the phantom, wondering what to do next.

A) Converse with the ghost
B) Take the book anyway
C) Leave to the kitchen
D) Leave to the lobby

A. Introductions, then what unfinished business holds her here, what does she know of the creatures which stalk the castle and its grounds.

Re: The Forgotten Castle

A. Maybe we can just be friends and not incur the wrath of the undead?

This sort of reminds me of the first resident evil game, zombie mansion, monsters, and whatnot. Just to be clear, I definitely mean that as a compliment. And now there's ghosts! Cool
