This is an interest/feeler thread for a concept I've been mulling over that could end up being very interesting, depending on whether it appeals to others on this site. It will use a slightly modified version of the Amber diceless RPG rules.

The Concept (in brief):

The King of Amber, Olin, is dying of mysterious causes and now his sons and daughters must vie for the right to ascend to the throne. This is no ordinary king and no ordinary kingdom. Amber is the heart of the Pattern, the representation of all Order in creation. All other worlds (including Earth) are merely Shadows of Amber. There are infinite shadows, and of each shadow, there are an infinite number of variations. The only true realities are Amber and its polar opposite: The Courts of Chaos.

As a scion of Amber, you are naturally immortal, and your blood allows you to walk the Pattern and be imprinted with the awesome power that it holds. Some of you may be descended from a House of Chaos as well, since Olin had several wives and countless mistresses, and if so, you may be able to travel the Abyss and learn the ways of the Logrus - prime Chaos. Still others of you may learn lesser but still potent powers, such as Trump Artistry, Sorcery, Words of Power, Conjuration, Shapeshifting, or other hidden abilities.

Attribute Auction

Even without these powers, Amberites live in the one true world and thus are many times more powerful than regular humans. Their only true competition in mental an physical feats are themselves and possibly the Lords of Chaos.

To represent this, Character Creation is done simultaneously in a Bidding War which represents years of rivalry and struggle between the Princes and Princesses of Amber.

You will bid on general categories of Psyche, Strength, Endurance, Weapon Skill, and Tactics.

After that you will bid on a selection of political and material advantages, such as potent allies within and outside of Amber, or powerful artifacts, or simply your birth order to see who the people of Amber naturally support!

With the points you have left, you will buy powers and starting relics of your own. Whereas your ranking in Attributes is public, no one but you truly knows what you're capable of unless you tell or show them.

The Prize

There can be only one victor. PCs may make temporary alliances but in the end, only one PC shall sit the throne. All others must either be dead, imprisoned, or pledge undying fealty to their superior sibling.

This is a diceless system, so victory is dependent upon who can press their advantage the most. If you don't have high strength, you'd better avoid letting someone else get their hands wrapped around your throat, otherwise you're done. The good thing is that through various powers and an infinite number of Shadow worlds to hide out in, you can bide your time to plot and plan your ascension against foes who might be stronger than you in a particular area.

If there is enough interest in this concept, I'll post a list of rules and power costs. If you'd like to see an example of an Amber Throne War front page done by somebody else, here's an interesting that I've found and will be emulating (changing names and offices to suit my own whims of course.)

Never heard of Amber, but going through that page you linked sounds interesting. I'm in, if you'll have me.

I don't wanna be King, but backing some other guy sounds like it might be fun. :V

I saw point buy things that were basically backers that wanted you on the throne, even if you don't want to be. Those sound fun.

Shapeshifting, also.

Re: Throne War!

Nah, if you play you gots to be interested in the throne. No point in it if you're just a cheerleader on the sidelines. Come on don't be afraid. You're doing it because you'd be the right person for the job!

If you're not in it to win it, it'll unbalance the game because you'll be backing another Player Character over the others with no reason for them to distrust you.

Welp, ya know, interest +1, etc.
Politics may inherently annoy some people, but it can make for some fun drama in an RP? /shrug

Re: Throne War!

Oh yeah, there is that, isn't there.

Well, where there's a will, there's a way. I'm sure I can figure out some other way to be the little reluctant heir to the throne.

Being swept up and pressured by a fuckhuge group into Kinginess sounds fun, I mean. :V

But... making a character with lots of support is gonna be expensive, isn't it. And shapeshifting and Logarus and all that is expensive, too.

Point dickery fun times~

Re: Throne War!

You can have an initially reluctant character, but as a player, you should give yourself a reason in your background why you might eventually be coaxed to genuinely seek the throne. Maybe you just can't stand the thought of serving the same sibling that tortured you throughout childhood. Maybe your one true love has been unjustly sentenced to death under Amber law and the only way to clear their name is to issue an official pardon as the rightful ruler of Amber? There needs to be a drive that sets you in motion towards the throne, even if you naturally wouldn't have such high ambition.

The royal princes and princesses that can afford to sit on the sidelines are NPCs. This is a throne war with you guys as the major players.

Right now I've had four royals show interest either here or in the shout:

Alpacalypse
GargantuaBlarg
Takimaru
Master Bei Shun

I'd like at least one more. Two or three more would be great.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's what I've got so far for how I'd run the bidding:

Each character has 250 points - note that buying Pattern or buying Blood of Amber are requirements.

The Attribute Auction will be first, in the following order (explanations about what these attributes actually are will come later):

Psyche
Strength
Endurance
Weaponskill
Tactics

We will then auction off miscellanious goodies. Some of these are all or nothing bids. Order is top to bottom:

Birth Order: determines order of succession. Highest bid is eldest, second is #2 and so on. Those who do not bid are Olin's out-of-wedlock children.
Olin's favorite: Dad liked you best. His trusted adviser, Cameron, will be told to take care of you and also perhaps entrust you with some other things as well.
Deworin's favorite: Grandfather liked you best. A crazy old kook, but he was the one who created the universe by drawing the pattern. He's been missing for ages but maybe he left you an important clue?
Queen Eileen's favorite : Olin's wife wishes to see you on the throne. (Must be a child of hers to bid.)
Nala's favorite: Olin's mistress likes you. What secrets might she have unearthed?
Rebma's Champion: Moire, the Queen of Rebma, the Under Sea Kingdom bordering Amber, supports your claim to the throne.
Spymaster: You control the royal spy network. This is a secret auction and only the winner will know who claims this.
Castellan's Favorite: Prince Jules controls the palace guard and defenses of Castle Amber. He supports your claim.
Steward of Amber City's Favorite: Princess Wanda runs the City militia and day to day government. She supports your claim.
Lord Marshal's Favorite: Prince Edric has the allegience of Amber's army, though it is scattered across Amber's borders. He supports your claim.
Admiral of the North's Favorite: Prince Gamon commans the northern fleet and the Shalomar Naval Base. You and he go way back.
Admiral of the South's Favorite: Princess Siobhan commands the southern fleet and the Mystara Naval Base. She's your best friend.
Warden of Arden's Favorite: Princess Rhone commands the Arden Forest waywatchers, controlling the main land route to Amber. She feels you're the best choice for ruler.
Treasurer's Favorite: Lord Aiden controls the wealth of Amber and has the keys to the vaults. He also happens to be the supreme judge. He feels you're the prudent choice for rule.
Lady Azure's Favorite: The Ambassador of the Chaos Courts and sorceress supreme finds you incredibly interesting. She loudly proclaims you to be the best choice for ruler and seems intent on getting you there!
Bride/Groom of the Serpent: The Serpent (physical representation of Logrus/Chaos) likes you. I mean, really really likes you. Where this might lead, who can say?
What's in the box? - You don't know what's in the box, but it'll be something worth having.

You don't have to bid on any of these if you don't want to. If no one bids, the person of interest remains neutral or the item of interest is assigned to an NPC sibling.

These auctions are held in this manner: Opening bids are secret, bids after that are public. Winner of auction is announced. Only the winner actually has to spend the points.

Role of Spymaster is a once off secret bid with the winner not being publicly announced. What's in the Box winner is announced but the identity of what's inside remains secret.

----------------------------

Costs of Powers (explanations of what they do can be found on the link in the first post with a little searching)

Pattern: 50 points
--Advanced Pattern: 25 points more
Broken Pattern: 10
--Broken Pattern Adept: 15 points more
Shapeshifting: 35 points
--Advanced Shapeshifting: 30 points more
Logrus: 45 points (Plus you need Shapeshifting)
--Advanced Logrus: 25 points more
Trump Artistry: 40 points
--Advanced Trump: 20 points more
Power Words: 10 points (Buys you five power words)
--More Power Words: 1 each
Sorcery: 15 points
Conjuration: 20 points
--High Compelling: 5 points more
--Advanced Conjuration: 15 points more

Re: Throne War!

Question!

If opening bids are secret, how will players know that they need to bid higher?

Sort of interested, but I already have way too many games going, and I'm horrible at the 'wants to be king' persona. Just saw that question and had to ask, though.

The bids will be done in IRC. The game will be played on the forums with separate threads for each PC.

In IRC, everyone PMs me their bid for whichever auction we're doing at a time. I record each bid.

Then I announce the highest bid, but not whom it was. So for example:

Me: "All right, bids for Psyche are in. Highest bid was 30. Do I hear 31? Anyone?"

Player A: I'll go 31.

Player B: 34!

Player C: 35!

Player A: You guys suck! 50!

Player B: Damn... why you go so high?

Player D: 51!

Everyone else: WHAT???

Player A: *glaring at player D* 52!

Player E: *laughing* You losers aren't gonna have anything left for Weaponskill! Hahaha, I'm gonna pwn you all.

Player D: Pass.

Auction concludes.

Me: Okay so here's the ranking for Psyche: Player A is Rank 1, Player D is Rank 2, Player C is Rank 3, Player B is rank 4, and Player E is unranked as far as you know.

Everyone but E: That's all right, we all know enough Psyche to melt his brain.

Player E: *scowls and shakes his head* Right! let's get to that Weaponskill auction! *rubs hands gleefully*

Re: Throne War!

Okay, so basically, it's unimportant to know each person's exact ability stat, the question is if their score is higher than yours, right?

Re: Throne War!

Correct. A person with Rank 3 will always beat someone with Rank 4 eventually.

However, if the difference is only 1 point, that eventually will be a longer time period than if there were a 50 point difference between Ranks 3 and 4. And that could allow for time for the lower ranked person to change the situation in their favor.

Re: Throne War!

So the points we put in are our actual points, then, correct?

Also, Pattern and Iogrus are mutually exclusive? Like, if I get one, I can't get the other?

Also, the way I understand it, just buying Iogrus means the Pattern becomes like anathema to you, even if you aren't using it - which is kinda scary. Is that right, or do you actively have to be using the Iogrus for the Pattern to mess you up?

Is anonymity important for the auction? We'll just be whispering you the initial amount, and then spending openly after that?

Re: Throne War!

To be able to walk the true Pattern and gain its power, you must have the blood of Amber (which you all do in this scenario, otherwise you wouldn't have a claim to the throne.)

To be able to walk the Logrus and gain its power, you must have the blood of Chaos. To be able to actually survive this process, you must also have Shapeshifting (which auto gives you Chaos Blood).

It's entirely possible for someone to have both Logrus and Pattern - it just means that your Dad had a tumble with a woman of the Courts of Chaos. This has happened more often than not. Olin's been alive for ages upon ages and has had many wives and many more mistresses who were invited to stay at Amber to raise their children. The Courts of Chaos may not like Amber, but some individual Chaosions like certain individual Amberites, so it's entirely possible to have mixed blood and therefore the ability to have both types of power.

There is no internal conflict. When you use Pattern or Logrus, you have to summon their image in your mind and it takes all of your concentration, so you can't use both powers at once, therefore you won't ever make yourself explode.

Re: Throne War!

Currently there are five people who've asked to be in the game:

Takimaru
Gargantuablarg
MBS
Alpacalypse
Farren

This is fine as a starting group. If there are any other takers, they should be speaking up now. I'd like to get a time when everyone might be able to be online for the attribute auction.

I'm quite flexible, so I'll leave it to the prospective players to suggest times that are good for them. This is just a one time thing, the rest of the game will not be played on IRC or any other chat devices. (Unless you want to run through a scene quickly with me.)

Re: Throne War!

Yeah GB, that'll be fine. Or we could just make up our own room like, #ThroneWar

All that matters is that we can see one another and do whispers in real time.

Re: Throne War!

Hmm... assuming that it will be held in the next two or three weeks, I generally can do it anytime during night hours, when I'm not at work / class. Sooo, I'd say after 6-7 PST and pretty much anytime after that within the span of... 14 hours, probably.

Any ideas on how long the auction session would take?

Re: Throne War!

depends on your response times.

Once everyone showed up and was ready to pay attention I'd estimate a couple hours? (just to be on the safe side, if we're all very quick it can go much faster.)

Individual powers can be bought later, in private PMs on ULMF. I foresee that being the case since people will probably have a bunch of questions about what powers can do and how they work in relation to others.

The key thing for players to remember is that being able to travel through Shadow is a big deal. The three ways to do that are Pattern/Logrus/Trump.

If you don't have one of those big three, you're gonna be stuck where you are and probably a sitting duck. Pattern is the big one, and is likely what everyone should consider taking first. So leave enough points to take at least one of these after all the auctions are done with.
