You can just use those, just search RPGmaker XP savegame editor and you should come across a website that has a black backdrop and white letters, download that. Use the second exe. locate the savegame file and you can edit gold amount as well as Str LvL etc.
What version of this are you using? In the one I downloaded from the site, the second .exe file doesn't work at all (it comes up, but refuses to open the save, saying the data is either wrong or corrupted), and even if it did there's no option to edit anything other than Gold, Saves, and Step count.
The only one that lists your Lvl is the first .exe file, and even then there's nothing you can do about it. You can highlight it, but that's it. There's nothing you can do to edit it.
EDIT: Sorry, I'm an idiot. I changed it by selecting the Str, Int, etc and not just the level. I still can't use the second file, though, I changed it in the first.
