Re: Games Discussion Thread

Subscription. I have an Edge card... or w/e Gamestop calls it, and they force you to get the subscription with it. At first I didn't like that I was FORCED to have the subscription, but for the price, it's worth it.

EDIT:
Also, looking at Dead Space 2, the drop in horror-factor won't be coming from the enemies or the environment - it'll be the guns. Seriously, a gun that impales enemies to surfaces, effectively rendering them immobile? There had better be an enemy/some enemies that that trick doesn't work on, or that'll make it waaaaaay too easy.
Also, the Stasis Module will recharge over time, doing away with the need for refill packs/stations.

AND ANOTHER THING.
Halo Reach. Two words. Space combat. Campaign confirmed. Multiplayer possibility.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

More I hear about Dragon Age II, the more excited I get. They're already starting the player character's speech in Lelianna's song, and of course they've done it excellently in Mass Effect 1/2.

Halo: Reach. I don't know why I'm excited, but I am. It's almost shaping up to be what Halo 2 should have been. :D

It's almost shaping up to be Star Wars Battlefront. Except with the exclusion of hero characters, and less classes. Not that that's a bad thing.

Battlefront was a great franchise, except they should have kept heroes out of the second one. I felt they kind of ruined the whole thing.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

The heroes were fixed in the second one, in the first one they were invulnerable.
Granted, removing them entirely would better fix balance issues, but there's some fun to be had playing famous names. Maybe if they had left it out of multiplayer?

Re: Games Discussion Thread

I personally felt that SW: Battlefront would have been better without any heroes, whereas BF II was a kind of 50/50 thing. The heroes were better balanced, and it was more fun, but they still broke the game once someone who was good/laggy/plain annoying was playing a hero. Mostly because they'd never fight the other side's hero, they'd just look for the regular units - if the other side had anyone good enough to have a hero at all, in some cases.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Suggestions needed.

Looking for a gift for a friend, he says he wants a puzzle game, but he can't play it if the graphics are kiddy. This is for the Wii or PS3. Clearly Zack and Wiki is out, but when I suggested Twilight Princess he said those graphics were too cartoony for him.

Does anybody know of any puzzle games that have mature graphics? There haven't really been any recent Bioware games that have a lot of puzzles even though I was thinking KotOR... I'm kind of stumped.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

The game Darksiders for 360 and PS3. It's fairly combat heavy, but pretty much through the whole game all I kept thinking was "this is Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time in the apocalypse".

It was a pretty good game, I never did get through it personally, it stopped being about combat (which I wanted) and more about puzzles as the game went on. More and more puzzles that got harder as the story moved along.

That's my recommendation. If he thinks those are "kiddy" graphics, then your friend has his head up his ass. Besides, Mark Hammil plays your post-apocalyptic and demonic version of Navi, using his Joker voice.

Example of Graphics:

(Also, see above for why smileys are fucking stupid! The link still works)

Hmm, I dunno, that infernal horse thing there is looking kinda chibi-esqe. It's head is huge and it's legs are all stubby...

And while it's been out for quite a while now, do you know if he's played portal? First thing that came to mind.

I liked Darksiders enough to have bought this for myself.

*sigh*

Well apparently he's already tried Darksiders and didn't like it. And by the way, normally I would slap him upside the head and be like "wtf be happy with something," but this particular friend is my future father-in-law.

Going to try the newest Prince of Persia for him, even though it looks bad.

Yeah, sorry Alias. Got nothing for you. Seems like a fucking pain in the ass to please... have fun with that father-in-law business if that's the case.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

He's actually wicked cool. He still has his GI Joes from when he was a kid, and we regularly play Warhammer, Settlers of Catan, and other such board games together. He also smokes pot, and not heavily enough that that's a negative trait. I don't know, maybe he doesn't have the attention span for video games that he used to.

Thanks for the advice though, I might try Darksiders for myself. Seems like the puzzle game age is long past...

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Just played Jumanji with a bunch of people who were smoking pot. I never realized just how much that game tried to fuck with the players.

Any game that just hands you Robin Williams is fine by me. All you have to do is play by the rules, and you won't have to worry about becoming a monkey, either. What more can anyone ask from a juju-infested boardgame?

Re: Games Discussion Thread

If we're getting into a discussion of games that fuck with the players, I will again bring up Arkham Horror. Three ways to win. About seven ways to lose. You don't play against other people, you play against the game.

Pretty sure he was talking about the actual board game, and not the movie. Sure the remote says "play" on it, but you watch a movie, not play it.
