Re: GameTrailers doesn't really fuck up GOTY 2009 as far as I'm concerned

If there was any one game I'd want a PS3 for it would be Disgaea 3. I imediately fell in love with the Disgaea series ever since I got to play it on a friend's PS2, and it's a crime that it's stayed tied up in console exclusive bullshit all this time. As it is I just don't have the money to go buying each and every games machine available.

Also whilst not really related to the GameTrailers awards, I just discovered that MechWarrior is back! And not just another one of the patronising MechAssault titles either, a proper MechWarrior. I'm going fingers crossed that they can do it right.

MechAssault was a perfectly good game really, but was a typical dumbed down version for "those simple minded console owners" that I hate so much. MechWarrior was never about walking over glowing power ups, or fighting giant spider bosses.

I, good sir, am offended! MechAssault was a damn good game! Do not hate on one of the few mech-based games in existence.

The only mech-based game I will hate on is Chromehounds. The single-player was pretty good, but the multiplayer? Ugh. Nothing but boosters and people who bomb you with massive double-cannon bullshit. The multiplayer was originally a never-ending war, but people decided to be fags and ruin the fun by boosting all day long.

Seeing as how we're on Mech games right now...

Guess that game!

Steel Battalion or something like that. I remember the ungodly price for the controller.

The fact that the picture was titled 'Steel Battalion Controler' made your hint a bit of a give away. =)

Though I recognised it from the top picture anyway. I always wanted that game, and loved the idea of the insane controller, but the price was a no for me unfortunately. I very rarely buy games for their launch price, preferring to wait another two months, let alone splashing out on a controller like that. Still wish I could have joined the nutjobs that did though.

And hang on Burrito, I don't mean to offend. I'm one of those "simple minded console owners", and I own both the Assault games. I'm talking about how the publishers thought that the only way to bring MechWarrior to the console market was to make a simplified more arcade like version. No mech customisation, damage condensed down to a basic health bar regardless of where shots landed, salvaging turned into colour coded glowing power ups, ammo removed, can't fire more than one weapon at a time, can't give orders to team mates or manage their equipment. I must sound like I hate it, which is far from true. The game still played brilliantly, and had some new features like swapping between mechs on foot which I really liked. But I wouldn't mind playing the full featured mech game I used to love on a console either.

The same way they thought that to sell the already brilliant FarCry to console owners they needed to jazz it up with all the animalistic mutant powers. When the original developers wouldn't co-operate, they take it away and give it to another studio who make a total mess of it. Another example being Civilisation Revolution, which like MechAssualt was fine, but still a bare stripped down skeleton of the normal Civ games.

It's the publishers attitude that I'm against really, not MechAssault. You can see the same thing again and again. They take an older successful series from PC, and make a simplified/more action based/gimmicky spin off game of it. Might as well title them "Strategy Game Lite" or "Shooter Game Extreme". I know it's all down to business, but do they really have to be so blatantly belittling?

Pet hate. Kinda bugs me... >_>

(Edit - Oh, and I am aware that there have been MechWarrior games on previous consoles such as the snes, but they can't much be considered in my rant for spec reasons as much as anything, and I'm no expert on those ones anyway.)

Mech Warrior used to be a pen and paper tabletop RPG. So the old PC versions were probably even simplified from that. I dunno.

However, the makers of the new one wanted to get back to the older roots of Mech Warrior, so it could be interesting where it goes.

Also. I never base anything off Yahtzee cause he is overly harsh in his reviews. True yes, but he never says anything good. Which is partially why I watch him. Not only for utter amusement, but to wash away the good to see the crap in the games that others won't say. In the end though, I never let him influence my decision on whether or not I want to buy a game, play a game, or anything.

I've always wanted to play the original Battle Tech pen n' paper game. Now I'm trying to write the reason I haven't... hmm...

Anyway. The PC games probably did stray from the original some. I know that the older ones featured a lot of mech designs I've never seen used again since MW3. And yeah, good full featured customisation is something on top of my list too. I mean, giving the Cougar a single set alternative weapon load out, and then calling it a Puma instead, did not swing with me.

You can see some artwork of the older BattleTech mechs in this vid (amongst other stuff). A few rather odd ones too.

It could easily go wrong still of course. They've already locked back into a renewed legal battle over the ancient copyright row with the rights holder of Macross and Robotech. But since they've actually started development, I'd like to think it's being taken seriously enough that they'll get past that though.

I like my fighting robots. If only you could just snap your fingers and have a game made exactly how you want it eh?

got some good ghost in the shell sounds there.

but yeah, most mechs look like complete ass, but there are a few that are just liquid sex. timber wolfs, super novas, vultures and the more recent angelic series. (recently went through all the current edition battletech books)

I wouldn't actually describe the Timber Wolf as a good looking mech, in a certain sense, but it sits right at the top for its iconic value. The Cauldron Born is fairly snazzy. Only ever seen it in MW3 though. I quite like the Masakari too, though it's death dealing star role in Mech Commander is probably the reason for that.

Y'know what games they need to remake with the kickass graphics of PS3 and 360?

Front Mission. Not the crappy little remake that was on the DS, that one fails. I'm talking Front Mission: Alternative, and Front Mission 3, and especially Front Mission 4. All of them had fairly good customization, and it wasn't very dulled down. The first GOOD mech series I ever played.

If we're talking games that should be redone in kick-ass graphics, I put forward Metal Gear Solid 1 and Halo 1.

The only halo I accept as a good halo game. Redone in 360-capable graphics, it'd prolly top the first GoW game for graphics.

I think I'd prefer to have MGS1 redone than Halo 1. On PS3 ofc, give 360's Halo in 3rd gen graphics, and PS3's MGS1 in 3rd gen graphics. Though I assure you only a part of wanting it is the fact you frequently catch Meryl without trousers on the PS1 game :p It was an awesome game. I did get annoyed when you first meet Sniper Wolf though...

Meh. Never got interested in MGS. I was more of a tactical kinda guy back in those days. Front Mission 3, Final Fantasy: Tactics, all that.

I heard rumours that there was an edition of MGS4 coming out for 360, much like editions of MGS2 came out for original Xbox.

That would probably be the new one, which centers around Raiden. I think the story is what Raiden was doing when he wasn't with Snake in MGS4.
