In today's news...

Re: In today's news...

Yeah Area 51 is one of those secrets so poorly kept that everyone knows about it. Sort of like how Delta Force still doesn't officially exist.

Kind of glad I only drink a soda once a month at most, of course I usually get the Mexican coke which is made with actual sugar as opposed to HFCS but still it's not the best thing in the world to drink.

EDIT: Yeah that does sound pretty stupid, especially since none of those plants looks remotely like a pot plant. Reminds me of that woman who had a garden in her lawn seized because she didn't have a permit, sometime last year.

Germany recognises Bitcoins as money...And taxes them!

Re: In today's news...

British government bullies press over whistleblowers

Because the journalists were investigating and releasing articles related to the NSA and other domnestic spying, governments are intimidating them.

It may sound biased, but considering it's journalists writing about intimidation tactics used on journalists I would say there is no way to get an unbiased article on it.
And then again, what the government has been saying all along may fit here in response to their own efforts. "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" "If you're not doing anything wrong, you won't have a problem"

550-tonne Russian hovercraft lands on beach

An unapologetic Russian military said the beach was in the middle of a firing range and should have been empty.

A minister said: 'Docking at the beach is a normal event. What people were doing at the beach on the territory of a military base is unclear.'

Nobody was hurt

Re: In today's news...

On the bright side it was just a hovercraft landing at the beach, and not the typical things that happen in the middle of a firing range.

Re: In today's news...

I think even the Russian government would not want to do that on their own citizens

And
----

German government: Using Windows 8 is a security risk, confirmed NSA backdoor allows them to take full control over your computer

Time to look into Linux if you haven't already. Everyone already sort of knew Windows had backdoors, but now it's the German government confirming it and warning against it.

Re: In today's news...

Never mind the NSA, I find the very principle of trusted computing dangerous.

Re: In today's news...

I always lol that the EU banned firefox on government computers for awhile because it was unsecure. Really shut up a lot of the fanboys who seem to be hipsters these days.

Re: In today's news...

And some stuff on Syria

Lefigaro is apparently a pretty high end French newspaper from what I can figure out, and they're reporting that between 5 and 7 days ago Israeli, Jordanian and US special forces have entered Syria.
It then links them to the chemical attack recently that caused more calling for intervention(Even though it is almost entirely clear and obvious it wasn't Assad doing that)

----
Also, some memo got leaked.

The Memo confirmed every conspiracy freak’s fantasy: that in the late 1990s, the top US Treasury officials secretly conspired with a small cabal of banker big-shots to rip apart financial regulation across the planet. When you see 26.3 percent unemployment in Spain, desperation and hunger in Greece, riots in Indonesia and Detroit in bankruptcy, go back to this End Game memo

It's a memo from an internal meeting between bankers conspiring to get more wealth by messing over the rest of the world and making everyone play by their rules.

It may be seen as questionable, but it's not that far-fetched. It's pretty much exactly what capitalism says they should do - Get more profits.

More Syria stuff

Cameron and Obama are threatening 'serious action' against Syria

Meanwhile in the US, polls show Americans do not want intervention

Even if chemical weapons are confirmed. Only 9% want intervention

And Russia Today reports the rebels used chemicals on government troops, which is more likely as the government has nothing to gain by using them.

Iran: 'Intervention' in Syria will have 'severe consequences'

Scratch the "post" in post colonialism. The way the US government keeps spreading their dirty tentacles just about everywhere, sickens me.

Apparently the NSA has been snooping into encrypted UNO video conferences, as well as 80 embassies and consulates world wide.

I personally find this disgusting, the term "terror" should be redefined. But what really grinds my gears: In times past this could have been reason for a war of aggression as well (not that I would want that, mind you), but today it evokes just a "meh" out of a lot of people.

Re: In today's news...

Thats not a rule, just his delivery style made me want to take the opposing side.

Re: In today's news...

SOPA is back....

They'll just keep trying

Here it is, by the way

Edit: Can not confirm for sure if this is the one, but it seems to be closely related

Edit2: Here's a video explaining the Syria thing and a collection of a load of links

Edit3: NSA's supplier forgot to secure their databases. Anyone want their programs? Link and info available here
Fresh from the guys who found the database

GUYS. THIS IS HUGE FOR ME.

We also have a few gay or bisexual characters in Borderlands 2. Sir Hammerlock is gay – you’re given a quest to find some old audio recordings by Hammerlock’s ex-boyfriend – and had an entire DLC all to himself. I’m also happy to say that in Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, we confirm that Mister Torgue (an NPC who also had a DLC named after him) and Axton (our playable Commando class) are bisexual.

And now for your daily anger. Or possibly whiplash, if you're just coming off of Chibi's link.

Of COURSE they immediately imply it's the vidya game's fault...

Re: In today's news...

Ugh...though to be honest, why is a 6 year old being allowed to play GTA anyway?

On a more lighthearted note, it reminds me of an incident I recently put in my Batch of Oddities where a kid tried to steal our Lt's scout car, saying he wanted to make a getaway like they do in GTA.
