Re: Member Announcements Thread

So I went to the computer shop near where I live to see if they could sort out some stuff for me for a computer I want built. They've now emailed me the parts list, does this look like a good computer to those who know what they're doing?

ATX CASE / 900w PSU
GIGABYTE AM3 890 MOTHERBOARD
AMD PHENOM II X6 1090T PROCESSOR
12GB DDR3-1600 RAM
1TB HARD DRIVE
ATI HD6850 IGB GRAPHICS
LG BLURAY + DVD READER /WRITER
23” TFT MONITOR
WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM 64 BIT

It's not that I'm doubting them, because I'm not. I just want to know from others who know shit about computers. A second opinion if you will.

What are you using your computer for that can benefit from 12 GB of RAM?

Yes. The only thing that seems a little weak to me is the graphics card, but I haven't upgraded hardware in almost four years so my estimation of its ability may be a tad off. Though, I'd ask for Professional over Home edition.

@Hentaispider: I asked for them to give me a list of what I could afford for £1000 and for it to be as powerful as I could afford. You know how business's work, they'll try and get you for as much as they can.

@Tassadar: If the graphic card is a lower end one then I'll probably see about downgrading the amount of RAM and upgrading the graphic card.

Don't quote me on that, as I'm not really sure. I actually can't find the listing for that card on any of the sites I shop for parts at, and I very vaguely remember when I was thinking about upgrading my hardware about 6 months ago seeing the ATI HD series somewhere around the 4000 mark. That could be completely fudged memory though, and even then that setup would probably play anything out currently at high settings.

Yeah thats what I'm looking for, a computer that'll run games made for the next several years on a high setting without needing to be upgraded.

May be on rather infrequently. My computer is pretty much having a meltdown, dunno when it'll be under control, if ever, and I don't exactly have any money to get a replacement. Until then I'll only have online access via using it elsewhere.

HAHAHAHAHAHEHEHEHEHEHAHAHAHAHAHE!

I'm sorry... It's just...

If you want to be able to play games on high for the next few years, get a good motherboard... That's the first pri. Then you don't need to go completely over the top with everything else as long as it runs current games on high, and can do so for a little longer.

Then be prepared to upgrade.

I say this because several friends of mine have tried doing what you are doing now. Getting a monster of a computer, expecting to be able to play anything, and then realizing that "Oh crap, technology really does move forwards a LOT."

As for the current specs you have up, I think I'd ask them to put in an extra hardrive, but not any bigger than max 500 GB (I'd recommend somewhere in the 250 GB area.) and with at least 7200 rpm, preferably higher. The reason being that big harddrives use a little more time, so when running heavy applications you'll want to run them off the small drive, and then use the big drive for storage of movies, music, pictures and so forth.

When building a computer it's often useful to remember Moore's law. Basically a guy that was working for Intel I think it was, made this law in the seventies, that every two years, the amount of transistors that can be placed on a chip for a the consumer market will at least double. The growth in transistor numbers, and as a result processing speed has never broken this law since. In fact we often see a faster growth than this.

What all this means is that yes, you should get a good motherboard. Get a good processor, and a decent graphics card. But make sure that you save a few of those sterling to upgrade your comp in the next few years. It's cheaper and it will get you better performance.

Phew...

Well I imagine, considering I'm getting it made by professionals and they know exactly what I want to do with it, that I'd need a good motherboard. Also, they've already started on it, I finalised everything yesterday.

D'Oh!

Well, in that case, with the specs you posted, it will be a beautiful machine.

I did however get them to downgrade the RAM that was listed to 8gb. I honestly can't see me ever needing 12gb and if I ever do then it won't cost me much to upgrade. Also, I will be getting a free wireless card, USB card and top range antivirus software.

Good call on the ram, seeing as it will be cheaper to upgrade at a later time as well. Excellent call on the AV software... I've seen too many decent computers grinding to a halt because of crappy Norton/ Symantec package deals.

I would rather cut off my own dick and eat it than use Norton. Though at the moment I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Comodo on my laptop. It's been good so far, haven't had a single virus get through yet.

Considering I think Norton is what fucked up my computer and required me to do the sys restore, yeah, good call. Personally, I'm running Zone Alarm, Spybot and Avast. So far, so good. *knocks on wood* But if you've got one you trust, rock on.

Microsoft essentials and Avast here...

Had trend Micro... But it wouldn't allow me to browse sites I knew were safe... Then deleted Internet Explorer itself as a hazardous cookie...

Without IE you can't get online in the first place... Had to system reset... Then I got rid of it... ASAP

My last announcement is somewhat cancelled. My comp is good for as long as I keep it turned on, with perhaps difficulties every time I restart until it "takes".
