Let me know if I've got the wrong one but for the sake of those unable/too lazy/other to use the evil that is google.

The game sounds interesting, I'm just about to download it and give it a whirl.

Edit: Somehow I missed the link in your signiture, nevermind my attempt to be helpful fell flat. Ooops.

The download link is down though because of mediafires 'no porn' policy :(

Re: Harem Collector

Let's Talk
First of all, I'd like to welcome longtime fan Daishi to the Harem Collector team. Daishi is one of potentially two people who will contributing writing to the game, increasing the quality of the game for you and freeing up more of my time to make more awesome game stuff.

Anyway, I was going to write about something completely different today, and I had actually wrote the entire blog post out in advance (a first for me). But after hearing Nekochan's comments on it, I want to make sure it gets reviewed by a couple more friends of mine before releasing it into the wilds of the interwebs. It might come out next week.

But this leaves me without a topic for this week's post. Mental Note: prepare a blog post to keep saved in case I have to do this again.

So, this week isn't about me, it's about you.

So in the comments below, tell me which of the Harem Collector girls is your favourite and why, let me know who like and why you like them, and what kind of sex scenes you'd like to see them in. Do you have a couple girls you'd like to see paired together? Is there a fetish you have that you'd like to see a girl used to explore?

I'll be paying extra close attention to the comments this week, making notes for possible future game content and just reading with interest what you guys think.
I like thinking that I've improved things. When I play regular computer games, my protagonist leaps at the chance to develop strongholds, mentor other party members, and make long-term investments.

Personally, I really like taking enemies and making them into allies, especially if I can tell myself they are better, more skilled/powerful/happy this way.

So how does this translate to HC? When one of the girls makes an honest comment that it seems they're actually better off this way, I like it. I'm not a 100% sure if everyone's collared, but whether they are or not it would be really awesome if there were times when their loyalty was tested and if they didn't have enough affection things would be harder. Maybe you'd have to recapture them. There's at least 1 event like that when Therese attacks, I know.

I'd like to see some more with your sister and the necromancer chick, especially given the whole radiant/necrotic dichotomy might have an interesting effect on their attitudes toward each other. And it would be neat to get a better idea of their personalities. Maybe they could have or develop some long-term goals beyond what they have now?

Also, it would be really nice to have an option that told you everyone's current affection points.

Thanks for the great game!

Re: Harem Collector

F*ck me ! I just wrote a long post and the website crashes.
I said a lot of nice thing about your game, but I'm not doing it short this time.

+ Good game
- Feature needed : Fast skipping of text
- Feature needed : Checkpoint (the everyday saving crystal could do) in dangerous zone.
- Gameplay improvement : Avoid dead end on the map, get rid of that 1x1 square flower/fecnce/... that make you go all the way arround
- Feature needed : Quest log
- Gameplay improvement : Show the important location using a red circle on a map
- Gameplay improvement : Make interractive objects more obvious (sparkle can make that for you)

Keep up with the good work.

.... and now, I click on "submit reply".

Since I've been revamping the relationship system, I've been doing a lot of this lately. I don't want to go into super-huge detail, but let's just say that your patience in developing relationships with your harem girls is going to pay off big.

Personally, I really like taking enemies and making them into allies, especially if I can tell myself they are better, more skilled/powerful/happy this way.
Larelle is certainly better off as your slave than as the victim of a lynch mob, that's for sure. As the relationship related quests get done, there will be more than a few moments like this. As for events that change depending on your relationship, there will be a few but it probably won't be broadly implemented. There will be, however, be one late-game quest where the good relations you have with your harem will pay off in spades.

An interesting pairing. Larelle is going to see a lot of new character development in the next release, mostly because you'll finally able to gift her/grow that relationship after she leaves your dungeon. The game is at the point where you'll see the harem girl's own agendas come up more often- and in fact, this has already been happening if you're paying very careful attention.

Also, it would be really nice to have an option that told you everyone's current affection points.
I'm going to ask one of the guys who has been helping out with contributed code about this, sometime after the September release. So, consider it forthcoming- I will find a way!

Damn, I like hearing nice things about my game too. Lol. I know your feels, I think something like that has happened to everyone, but still, I would have loved to read your whole thing.

Whenever I write a big long thing, I usually cut and paste it into a text file so that way I don't lose all that effort in case something goes wrong.

- Feature needed : Fast skipping of text
I can look into this, but I don't know what options I'll have at this point. It probably won't be a traditional VN-style text skip though, probably more like, "holding down this button auto-advances messages".

- Feature needed : Checkpoint (the everyday saving crystal could do) in dangerous zone.
A couple of the larger quests already have some, the problem elsewhere becomes where I put the damn things without having to redo every dungeon map.

- Gameplay improvement : Avoid dead end on the map, get rid of that 1x1 square flower/fecnce/... that make you go all the way arround
I'll look into this, but I usually don't bottleneck the player for no reason.

- Feature needed : Quest log
Alina serves as the game's quest log atm. This probably won't change.

- Gameplay improvement : Show the important location using a red circle on a map
A lot of people have requested a map feature but that's an awful lot of work at this point. A world map probably isn't out of the question but I'm rapidly closing in on my 200th map so minimaps per area will almost certainly not happen.

- Gameplay improvement : Make interractive objects more obvious (sparkle can make that for you)
Rather than do this, I want to make it so that lamost every object in the game returns some kind of message so your time exploring feels less wasted.

Re: Harem Collector

Okay i may have downloaded this because of the name but forget the sex, the game is amazing just counting the mechanics and overall hilarity. I dropped in thinking this was going to be just another random RPG maker game with crappy CG but i'm loving it. It is also the first i have seen with 3D CG for sex scenes.

After you get the necromancer girl, is that it content wise for the current version of Harem Collector? Since I got her and collared her there doesn't seem to be anything to do.

Re: Harem Collector

Just played the game for about 2 to 3 hours, have a few thing I wanted to say about this game.

From your description, your plan reminds me of Alicesoft's Rance series. Both game have a male main character going all over the world and collect woman to add into his harem (and I think your satisifaction system was inspired by Rance 7?).

What I like about this game:

I really like the mansion improvement system, and more importantly the business investment system in this game. Those system not only give me a place to spend in game money, it make me feel the world is relavent. Being able to interact and in term influence the game world other then doing a few quest here and there is not something I see a lot in RPGmaker game (of course it could be I simply don't play them enough). And invest in other people's business really makes me feel like what I do in game is affecting other people's life.

All the 4th wall joke and reference jokes. I know this can be a bad thing for some gamers, but I feel the premise of this game is not that serious to begain with. It's about a douch going around putting woman into slavery to satisify his desire and pokemon "got catch them all" fetish. While I acknowledge a somewhat more serious storyline can work (I "Harem" is an example) I personally prefer a story that knows it's not serious and just go crazy with it.

And I also like your art style, the cartoony style custom portrait goes really well with your story in my opinion.

What I didn't like:

Most of the map design is... at least three or four times too large for its own good. While there are certain interior that's nicely clustered (The Bakery is a prime example), most of the town map and the overworld map is just huge empty space after huge empty space. It makes navigating the town needlessly difficult (I spend about five minutes trying to find the estate office) and even when I pretty much got the town map down in my head its still just painful to run through the town. Those huge map really don't add gameplay to a game, they just make gaming time needlessly longer.

And I'm a little conflicted about the personality of the Main Character Quagmire (Please tell me that's not a Family Guy reference). I felt his personality tend to sway from witty douchbag (but still very likable) to complete psychopath. I'm not sure if I triggered event wrong or something, but why did he burn down the turnip farm after he invested 400 gold? I understand he hates turnip, and he can be a douch but why burn it down after he invested in the farm first? Does he just love to randomly throw money away after achieve his dream?

Possible suggestion:

Please shrink the maps down, You probably wants to take a more realistic look for your game with the huge space, but they don't add anything to gameplay. And I don't think it makes sense for slum to have huge spaces between different hut that's large enough to fit a small castle in between to begin with. While I understand you don't wants to redo every map, then please make future map smaller. Those huge maps just make me want to bang my head against a wall in between the good part of the game.

If it's possible, maybe add more choice how a player can affect Quagmire's action (Kind like "Harem"'s good/bad path). I'm not saying change Quagmire's personality completely as I really enjoy his smartass personality, but maybe add some option for a player to choose between being a selfish landlord/business owner who still show some sign of benevelence to those who don't threaten his position, or a plain psychopath (For example, in the turnip farm example Quagmire can choose to either invest in the farm, or just burn it down at night).

I appreciate the effort you already put into the dialogue change to invested business, but if you have time, maybe add a bit visual effect to invested business? Maybe add a few cluster, or a few more farm animals to the invested business? While they don't tend to do much for gameplay, some visual different is always nice to have although they are definitely not priouty so feel free to entirely dismiss this.

And also not a very important point, but I see a few character who join Quagmire's party or mansion still use default RPGmaker Portrait. While it's also not important to gameplay, the visual difference in character portrait is a bit distracting so some more custom portrait would be really nice.

I know I did a bunch of knit-picking in my post, but please don't take this personally. I really like this game (apart from the huge map), and I think it has potential to be as good as Legend of Queen Opala if you continue to work on it.

Re: Harem Collector

Please don't change the event where you burn down the turnip farm right after investing in it, that was one of the funniest moments in the game. qinlongfei, there are some good/bad choices in the game already. For instance, the cannery investment lets you choose whether or not to turn it into even more of a horrible sweatshop. And there's a very interesting choice after you defeat the paladins who invade your manor, though I'm not sure I'd necessarily characterize it as good/bad.

By the way, nomoshing, I saw your post in the blog about all the new stuff you've been exposed to since you starting developing HC, and I wonder if you've played this RPGMaker game?

The protagonist of HC reminds me of Anebriate in a few respects, and I know you've talked about wanting to make more objects in the game world that the PC can interact with. Drunken Paladin is a poster child for interactable environments, to a somewhat awe-inspiring degree. If you haven't played it, I highly recommend you check the game out and stick around for at least the first dungeon or so. You might want to use the walkthrough so you see just how much ridiculous stuff is packed into every town.

The latest build of HC does look pretty promising, but people might want to hold off until a bug patch or 2. Some stuff I've seen.
- The flags for recruiting Penelope from the eastern farm are wack, yo. The game thinks she's already enslaved, and her father is happy with you. She wasn't anywhere there or in the manor
- Elaiya and Felix don't seem to have working chat/gift scripts.
- 2 conversations at the candy store call a defunct Larelle portrait and crash the game
- Some of Meline's sex scenes call up CG that doesn't disappear after dialogue ends, obscuring the map.

By the way, just where do you buy the new perfume gift item? I've looked all over the place, but I can't find it. Is there a way to check everyone's relationships yet?

Re: Harem Collector

It's very difficult to say what "all of the content" is because the game is designed to be nonlinear. Maybe you've seen everything, but I don't know because it's possible to miss entire quests by now checking all over the place. I've been approached by someone who wanted permission to administer a Harem Collector wiki, though, so that will have a comprehensive list of all quests and content (hopefully)

From your description, your plan reminds me of Alicesoft's Rance series.
I love Sengoku Rance and it was a huge influence and inspiration for the game, and you're right on the money about the satisfaction system. The main character is very much an expy of Rance reinterpreted for Western gaming tropes and ideas.

I really like the mansion improvement system, and more importantly the business investment system in this game.
I know you mentioned that the investment system makes you feel more a part of the world, and that's good. The primary reason why the business investment system exists at all is because I want the player to feel large and in charge- and making investments to receive a big chunk of cash at the end of the day seemed an expedient way of doing that.

All the 4th wall joke and reference jokes.
This is just as much a sort of way of dealing with cognitive dissonance for me too. Not only do I enjoy writing humour, but I don't think I could bring myself to be that plain mean to women if it wasn't largely played for laughs.

I have tentative plans to do a much more serious game after HC, and while it'll still be a harem game it won't involve anywhere near as much non-con and rough play.

And I also like your art style, the cartoony style custom portrait goes really well with your story in my opinion.
In case you missed the credit, all faces are done with Erangot's Character Machine. I don't know what I would do without that wonderful program.

Most of the map design is... at least three or four times too large for its own good.
I know you haven't been following the game for very long, but I do try to add new stuff to the towns for every release. The towns and the world map will fill in over time, and there will be lots of stuff to see and do.

And I'm a little conflicted about the personality of the Main Character Quagmire (Please tell me that's not a Family Guy reference).
Well, that is a Family Guy reference, but it's also not the hero's name. I always refer to the main character as the hero, and the game has a grab bag of ten (or is it twelve?) names that it randomly picks from. Most of them are video game and anime references

As for his personality.... He burns down the turnip farm because I thought it was funny, especially with how unexpected the scene is. The hero's personality is deliberately inconsistent, and largely based on him doing what I feel is best for the game. The hero burns down the turnip farm because it's funny. The hero has a touching moment with Meline during the manor invasion because I felt it improves the game as a whole. The hero decides whether or not to overwork the orphans at his cannery because I decided that some players would find that objectionable and decided to make it the player's choice.

Please shrink the maps down
I'm sorry that the maps drive you to self-harm, but no. There's a concept called "design space", which is what the maps are designed to reflect. The slums are empty but I haven't decided if that's everything I want to put in the slums yet. The world map is empty because I need a lot of space for potential dungeons and such.

If it's possible, maybe add more choice how a player can affect Quagmire's action (Kind like "Harem"'s good/bad path).
I despise binary morality systems in games. I'm not going to include a mechanic where some choices are "good" and others "evil" because they're arbitrary and open to so much interpretation if you try to do anything more interesting that kindergarten-level morality plays. But, that being said, there are points in the game where the player has choices, with the aforementioned cannery, whether or not you impose a collar on Therese and Larelle, and how you choose the deal with the guard captain in Eastfort after investing in the drug dealer as examples. Heck, I'd even go so far as to say that developing your relationship scores with the slave girls is a choice with a moral component- nothing in the game forces you to be nice to them and gift items are pretty expensive.

I appreciate the effort you already put into the dialogue change to invested business, but if you have time, maybe add a bit visual effect to invested business?
There are technical reasons why this is difficult. It could be something to look at when I have time, but right now I have a big backlog of relationship love quests people are doing to be clamouring for and a lot of catching up to do in terms of art assets.

And also not a very important point, but I see a few character who join Quagmire's party or mansion still use default RPGmaker Portrait.
I've been updating a character or two with unique art every month. Making the face sheets with the unique art is actually an exhausting process for me and a single character can take as long as three hours to make ready. I do intend that one day, every character will have similar face art.

I know I did a bunch of knit-picking in my post, but please don't take this personally.
I welcome criticism, and some of the best improvements to the game have been because of things people suggested to me. So don't worry about it, as long as you're not being douchey about comments on the game I'll first read what you have to say and take it or leave it as I see fit.

Some people really seem to think I have fragile glass feelings, but I guess that's because internet. I can take criticism, and have only gotten angry at player comments once.

Please don't change the event where you burn down the turnip farm right after investing in it, that was one of the funniest moments in the game.
Don't worry, that turnip farm is always going to get exactly what it deserves.

And there's a very interesting choice after you defeat the paladins who invade your manor, though I'm not sure I'd necessarily characterize it as good/bad.
Actually, yeah, it's weird that qinlongfei whould fixate on the turnip farm thing and not remember that quest which everyone has to do at some point.

I'm so looking forward to the next part of that quest chain.

By the way, nomoshing, I saw your post in the blog about all the new stuff you've been exposed to since you starting developing HC, and I wonder if you've played this RPGMaker game?
I have no, but I downloaded it and I'll get to it as soon as I'm done playing OFF. I have someone currently breathing down my neck to finish that so I can discuss loopy surrealist interpretation feels.

The latest build of HC does look pretty promising, but people might want to hold off until a bug patch or 2.
Because only one optional thing causes the game to break in the September release, I haven't been racing out a new version but I've gotten a lot of bug reports. I don't know if I'll post a second update before public release or not though, because I've been busy administrating the "business" side of things. I don't want to talk about my plans too much, but I will say this: January 2014 will be a very exciting time to be a Harem Collector fan.

By the way, just where do you buy the new perfume gift item? I've looked all over the place, but I can't find it. Is there a way to check everyone's relationships yet?
Unfortunately I totally forgot to put in a place where you can buy perfume and pearl necklaces. I've temporarily stuck them in Gift Shop Reccetear, so look for them there next time I update the game. Eventually there will be a jewlery/accessory store in Northmarket that will sell them alongside some accessories, though.

As for checking people's relationships, not really right now. I have someone in mind to beg for a ruby script so that you'll see a separate box with your relationship score whenever you talk to someone at home.

Yeah, and thank you for designing like that. Making decisions is way more interesting when you aren't being influenced by your paragon/renegade meter.

"I beat Dungeon Assault, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt"? I'd buy one. :) I liked how you put in that bonus unlock code for winning DA, BTW. If we aren't waiting on a new update before the public release, that's cool with me. I'll just explore a different part of the game, or maybe play something else.

Thanks for the clarification.

Question: HC's world is vaguely D&D, right? Can I assume there will be a genie at some point? If there is, I hope you check this out before you start writing dialogue.
