It has been made known to me that some of our members are wanting captcha.

I'm cool with it i suppose, its everyones forum. But aika being the boss man that he is, this really lies more in his area.

that sounds like a rather large pain for the people who post a lot. Maybe putting a captcha on making new threads? that would cut out a lot of the adbots without any real people having to repeatedly write captchas all day, i think.

Requiring captchas to post new threads would be fine, but requiring it for each new post would just be annoying.

I'd rather not have captcha at all, but if it's possible to have it just for new threads, I wouldn't mind too much.

Considering how many people are having problems with email activation and how it's not very effective against spambots, would it be possible to move entirely to manual activation? I realize that it would be more work for you admins and a little inconvenience for new posters, but it would stop spam.

Doesn't having a captcha system refer to using it for registration? I've never heard of a captcha being used for making posts on a forum.

If that's the case, then using a captcha for registration sounds like a perfectly sensible idea to me, assuming it's not to difficult to implement.

I was going off of what slicer and Shrike said in regards to the posting thing, but yeah, this makes more sense.

IIRC, we tried capcha for registration previously, and it did nothing to stop the bots; they were a much higher volume than we we were using email verification.

Best way to mess up ad bots is to prevent them from posting if a url is in a post from someone under X posts(5 is a pretty good number).

While that would be a great way to eradicate bots, a large group of contributors, are former lurkers. And therefore have less than 5 posts and...

Well... You ever try linking something without linking to it?

Makes people have to copy the url and then paste it manually... And it's just an arts and crafts mess... And the underaged b8 that creeps in when there parents are away keep eating the paste option...

I see what happened. I never fully clear the sections since I just clear out the new spam in the doujin section, so when Hellboy (not a necessarily a dumper but idiotically posts like one) necroed the thread, they BOTH came up as unread posts, hence me assuming "unread" meant "new." My bad.

So great, I thought I got through to hellboy to stop posting threads like a dumper, but now, to get past the post limit, he's just spamming old threads with bullshit like them too.

Well, in all honesty there's no system that can really replace having actual people read the posts. Captchas in general do work, but there are ways to get around it (for awhile, some recaptchas could be circumvented by entering almost anything), below x limits are useful, but at the same time it can be annoying for people who've been lurking and finally want to contribute something, only to find they need x posts, (I myself have run into this a few times on other forums).

In all honesty, the only automated system I've seen that's really effective for keeping spammers out is somethingawful, and I'm fairly sure that's not something we want to implement.

What about using Captchas when your post will have/contain links? This idea came to me when I was trying to edit a post on one of my threads, but gave me the "cannot post links unless you have 15 posts" error message.

I'm not entirely certain you can limit captchas to just that. It might be possible, but for the most part, I've been on forums where they require captchas to post, well, anything, and it's a pain in the ass, especially if all you want to do is just make a quick remark and be done with it. Granted, the majority of those are for forums where they allow you to post without logging in or to post anonymously, whereas we don't have that, at least, but it's still a pain, in my opinion.
