Against my better judgement...
Battle for Ascension
You are a young magi, an apprentice, gifted and somewhat learned in the arcane arts. You study under a master who has many similar apprentices and pupils, in what is almost a school for magic, yet not quite. A large manor house with no small number of libraries or rooms, but empty save for the master, his pupils and his familiars.
His current batch of pupils are all roughly equal in skill level, experience and power, but it seems this in and of itself proposes a problem.
"There shall be a contest," he announced one night at dinner. "Each of you have specialised in different things, this is true, That is the dangerous art of summoning. Until now I have forbidden you all from touching the books that detail this, but I believe we are ready."
"In three days hence, you shall engage in battle to determine which of you becomes my successor. This battle is to submission; as soon as you either surrender or fall unconscious, you are expelled from the battle. You will be confined to the library where the books on summoning are and a few adjacent areas. The only non-summoning spells that will be permitted is your mage armour and healing spells. If you are caught using anything else the punishment will be... fitting."
"Until the battle, the ban on the summoning library will continue. I suggest each of you save up your energy until then. You will likely need it."
-------------------
Okay, so unless you haven't guessed, you're one of the aforementioned students. We'll get into details about how all this works down the track, but basically, I'm looking at doing a game turn every few days, a week at most; depending on how slow the players are. (Please be expeditious with your responses to prevent the game bogging down, if you cannot handle this, de to other commitment, I implore you not to signup. I'm still used to a community for these sorts of things where you can actually get a daily update going, and while I doubt even I can manage that, I don't want to have to harass people who haven't responded in over a week.)
Gameplay is simple in its complexity. Each turn you will have a number of moves and 3 actions you can perform. The map will be set up in a grid so that each move is one section of grid, and the actions must be performed usually by interacting with objects; such as search a bookcase for something useful, studying a carried book at a desk, but others, such as casting a spell or drawing a summoning circle, don't require any specific location. (Although may perhaps best be done privately).
Combat will be largely between summoned creatures, which the players have no direct control over. They can, instead, give a short list of orders regarding the fight, such as "retreat when losing", "don't show your true power unless you need to" or "end this fight quickly and decisively".
Whilst roleplaying is technically optional, given that all you're required to do is submit your actions, I recommend roleplaying where you can, as it can net rewards of its own. In addition to possibly learning something from another player, perhaps even an alliance of sorts that helps to share information, there are many familiars around the manor which may also be able to be persuaded to aid you.
Lastly, when/if this game is closer to launch, I will state the different between game rules and battle rules. The different being game rules are OOC, and battle rules are IC and can be broken. Things like the restrictions on where in the manor one can go and the ban on most spells are IC rules, and if you can get away with breaking them all power to you, but getting caught will result in IC punishment. Rules like "not leaving the manor" on the other hand, are OOC. No going off to have a tea party where no one can find you and coming back to finish the survivors.
Hopefully this isn't so long or complex that it scares people away. It is in essence a rather simple game to play, designed to be learn as you go.
Oh, and your race is human. Deal.

Eh, sounds interesting. Some questions:
How erotic do you want this? None, player's choice, or utterly humiliating?
What limitations on summonings do you have? Time, max number, energy supply?
How many players are you looking for?
I'll probably come up with more questions later.

How erotic do you want this? None, player's choice, or utterly humiliating?
Short answer: Player's Choice.
Long Answer: It depends on a number of factors. When it comes to NPCs, some are more inclined than others. This includes both the master's familiar and the summons themselves. As far as other players, it depends more on them than anything I say, although by surrendering from the competition one's character can escape any forced humiliation.
I don't really do hard forced rape, however.
What limitations on summonings do you have? Time, max number, energy supply?
This is something that'd I'd rather have explained IC through the characters learning it. That said, I will give away as a freebie that the idea of summoning more than one at once is considered to be extremely foolish and downright dangerous.
How many players are you looking for?
Probably 4-7 would be ideal, I'm willing to stretch to as many as ten, but I doubt I'll get that many people applying anyway. I'm willing to run with as little as three, providing I think the players are good enough to keep things interesting.

Don't ask.
second question..to lose and be booted from the competition will require what exactly? lose once your done? what?
Well... basically. Losing is not something that can happen within a turn, however. (Unless you surrender).
The characters will have their mage armour and their health; when health is reduced to 0 a player is eliminated by unconsciousness. Mage Armour acts as a shield, so almost all attacks will drain that before it will drain health. And providing the mage has enough mana, they can restore either, although of course doing so while under direct attack will only by time for so long.
To answer the inevitable question about mana, it will recover at a steady pace, and there will be places where one can spend an action to boost their mana also.

I think what it means is there is a system, but it's mostly behind the scenes, and from our side, it's mostly going to be about roleplaying. We have certain actions we can take each turn, and beyond that, it's freeform.

This... is something I haven't tried before. I'll give it a shot! Just... what is life like in this mansion? I need a little more before I start making a character...
Incubus
23rd October 2010, 12:38
Well, it's perhaps easiest to think of it as more of a school than a mansion, for all that it is a reasonably sized manor house. Life is spent mostly in study, either from the master or by his familiars; which range from things like talking housecats to small pixies and other mischievous things, there's an angel who acts somewhat as a chief steward and a number of other magical creatures and the like.
The students dine together three times per day, but have separate sleeping areas and after the initial training study separately, lessons catered to suit their magical style. The master himself is a stern but fair one, who pushes his students to excel but doesn't demand the unreasonable.
He also strives to keep some of the more mischievous or deviant of his servants away from the students, as he has no direct control over them; they are not summoned but instead his by contract so he cannot impose his will upon them. Although because he has no such direct control, they occasionally slip through. Any sexually minded familiars he may have fall into this category, and there are a few of both male and female variety that your character may or may not have met.
There are also harsh restrictions on what rooms the students may enter. Some are magically warded so that as soon as anyone enters them, the master immediately knows, others are simply designated off limits. When the game is launched I will provide a complete map and a short description of rooms.
Any questions?

Oh oh! What will you need from the players, and what should we be thinking of as far as magic? I don't want to god mod, I want to play fair in the interest of the story!
Incubus
23rd October 2010, 12:49
Well, I will point out that most magic is prohibited by the rules of the contest. That is not to say you cannot use it, simply that doing so is against the rules and if you're caught it could be bad for you.
That said, part of the character sheet, when I write it up, will involve the character's "Magical Speciality", the area in which they excel. I encourage people to discuss this with me ahead of time to determine something suitable, as when one is desperate, they'll typically abandon the rules in hopes of a dim chance.
Likewise, ingame, if one wishes to cast a spell, please run it by me via PM. Due to the inherent restrictions it won't be so common that I actually want to write up a full spell list. I've got enough to do as is :P

You might as well leave the thread, I don't like the attitude and won't be GMing someone who has it towards me. And frankly, if you didn't manage to figure out something that everyone else has, it's better this way for that reason too.
You lose, good day sir.
For those other than this one who are curious or confused because of the seemingly somewhat contradictory posts, Kathy has it pretty much on the nail. Short of your "moves" and "actions" of the turn, you're free to roleplay with whoever or whatever is in the room (regardless of actual location within the room, although conversations will be broken by one or the other party leaving the room). When a combat involving your summoned creature will occur, I'll ask you for a short list of orders. The number of valid orders you can use depends on your control over the creature, but since it's difficult to tell that, I'll have people always send in up to five, and discard whichever of the lower ones are not valid due to control issues. (So, prioritise the top of the list and if you can cover everything you need in one or two orders, you're fairly safe to not worry about having orders ignored)
There is a system, and all of the summon-able creatures have their own special abilities, some of which that may only used again after a cooldown; but how closely you manage their usage depends on your decision and how much you know about them. You can leave the judgement of when to use their powers to them, or tell them to only use it when you say so. But to prevent things from getting bogged down, as well as keeping the summon's abilities secret to one who has not done sufficient research on it, I will handle the combaty mechanics. So yeah, I'm not just arbitrarily deciding who wins what.
And if I have to repeat this explanation a third time, and go into even more detail, I will be unhappy.

The latter, battles will take up only a part of a game round, you submit your short list of orders, and they fight out the entire battle. Because of this, I don't think it'll seem particularly pokemon-esque.
Vina-Fran
24th October 2010, 05:06
Hehe, I was thinking of pokemon too. So we will become aquainted with several familiars and pick ours to use, or create our own?
Incubus
24th October 2010, 08:58
You'll be researching on summon-able creatures and through your research decide what to summon, most likely. The actual research requires a little luck and digging as different bookcases result on rolls on different tables to see what you find, so different cases give you different chances of finding different things etc.
The end result is ideally you find out information about what you're summoning, it's strengths, weaknesses abilities etc and the method of summoning them, although there's no guarantee you'll get all of the above information on any one thing and may be forced to try and summon something you have incomplete knowledge of in order to protect yourself.
So, no, all the summon-able creatures are predetermined, and not to be confused with the familiars of the master, who while they may even be the same type of create as some of the things you can summon, will not be the same one as you summon.

@Xiv + Inc
Come on you two, stop taunting each other. Although there was a bit of confusion about it, Inc answered everything more completely than necessary. Even mentioning about the individual stats of the summons (which we won't know) that will be behind the scenes.
@Pokemon references:
Not everything that summons stuff to fight is pokemon. There were lots of other things before pokemon that had similar concepts, and some of them were insanely better.
As for actual play, it will be more akin to summoning our guardian, giving it brisk orders, then standing back and watching the battle play out, rather than sitting there ordering it around what attack to use. Read previous descriptions about possible orders to get an idea for the kinds of things that can be suggested as orders.

Well, the pokemon referance was to the thought that you would be commanding them every turn. Since it's more going to be that the summons are going to be choosing their own actions within your guidelines, it should be a bit more interesting while making combat faster as well.
I do have a quick question though, what sort of setting is the game set in? Obviously it's going to have some element of fantasy with magic and summoning and such, but is it medival fantasy?

Character Name: Deneb
Forum Account: Maikochan
Magic Speciality: Transformation and Animation
Gender: Female
Appearance: http://www.ulmf.org/bbs/album.php?albumid=268&pictureid=4884
Backround:[sic]
Deneb is the youngest daughter in a long line of sorceresses who can trace their lineage back to Circe and count such figures as Morgan le Fey and Medea in their ancestry, and even claiming to be decended from Hecate herself. Magic comes to the small girl like swimming does to a fish, so it's a small wonder that she decided to follow in her legendary ancestors' path. Despite her natural talent, especially with magicks that alter forms or impart a symblence of life to innanimate objects, Deneb is still inexperianced when it comes to other applications of magic. To further her study and her goal of becoming the "greatest witch to ever walk the earth", she sought out the master of the school.
Rich and talented, Deneb usually acts however she wants without thinking about consequences. She'd rather leap first and then look back to see how far she jumped. Her social interactions are much the same, Deneb saying whatever is on the top of her mind at the time without thinking about it first.
Deneb's voice of reason, patience and common sense is a magical, flying, talking, crystal pumpkin named Roger. Roger was the result of Deneb pouring a large amount of animating magic over a period of time into the crystal. The result was a permanently enchanted pumpkin with the personality of "a dehydrated cracker". Roger acts as Deneb's voice of reason, but also as her confidant, assistant (although the level of assistance he can render is limited by his lack of limbs) and photographer (Deneb placed a small digital camera in Roger when she wanted to take some pictures of herself and forgot to take it out). Roger has a stereotypical bulter-like personality and it's been commented that Roger is to Deneb the same way JARVIS is to Tony Stark. Although Roger is free willed and not bound to Deneb in any way, he still looks over the girl. Deneb has promised to animate a body for Roger once her skills improve.
Deneb's magical skills have thusfar been focused on transforming people and objects and animating objects to act as psudo-familiars. In keeping with her personality, she animates everything from hair-brushes to book stands to even her own bed. In most cases, her animation ends after about an hour, though small objects and/or objects that don't tend to do a whole lot of moving will last longer while large and/or very active objects will lose their animating magic a lot faster. Deneb's ability to transform living beings is similarly limited and requires a touch. Her common transformations are typically cosmetic ones, though a favorite of hers is reversing another person's gender or altering it to put them somewhere in between male and female.
Similarly to Roger, Deneb's use of her magic on her own body has also affected it permanently. Transformation spells cast on others typically last an hour, but when she uses the spells on herself, they last indefinitly, theoretically forever, or at least until Deneb changes her mind and wants green hair instead of blue that day.

Hrmph. Thought I'd post this, since Incubus likes it. But I'm keeping the specifics of Delilah's magic secret, for now.
Name: Delilah
Forumite: DeMatt
Magic Specialty: Enhancement
Gender: Female
Appearance: Tall, statuesque, light brown-red hair. If you think Jessica Rabbit (http://www.google.com/images?q=Jessica+Rabbit), you won't be too far off. Though typically, around the academy she's dressed quite a bit more utilitarian - and, of course, she doesn't have quite so much bosom to show off.
Background: Daughter of a prosperous merchant family, Delilah came late to magic. Her apprenticeship at the academy interrupted plans to marry her off for political advantage... and she wants to keep it that way.
Like her parents, Delilah is ambitious, wanting to make a name for herself amongst the rich and famous. She views her magic as an extra tool - whether to improve on the goods that she ends up trading, or to better her skills at the bargaining table.

Appearance: Smallish, black hair and violet eyes. Doesn't often wear makeup or any extra clothing beyond her uniform, but also tries not to stand out, surprisenly considering her attempts to upsur her peers achedemicly.
Backround: Growing up in the nasty part of her hometown, Morgana was acidentally responsible for several deaths for her ineptitude with her dark magics, oftem the energy being released horrificly when she was angry or scared. Forced to flee, she eventually wandered the land, living a nomadic and quiet life of solitude.
When she eventually reached the town nearest the Academy, the weeks of wandering had shown. Her control of her black arts had focused dramaticly, and her favored spell- manipulating shadows to create terrifying visages- could be said to cause nightmares to people not expecting it. She was enrolled by the Master and given a warm bed and a place to call home again. Even still, she is a dark and brooding figure who prefers her company only consists of dark spirits that she draws her powers from.

Character Name: Cassandra Faust
Forum Account: The Alpacalypse
Magic Specialty: Fire Magic
Gender: Female
Appearance: Blonde hair that reaches to the tops of her breasts when not tied up in twin-tails (a rare occurrence). Slightly less than average height, slightly larger than average bust, purple eyes. Almost never seen without elbow-length black gloves, or her lucky locket. Other than that, will wear whatever the occasion calls for, from lingerie to tank top and jeans to extravagant evening gown.
Background:At the age of 16 Cassandra first demonstrated an ability to control fire (which is fairly old, as far as first manifestations go). However, the first time she showed such an ability, it was nearly flawless. The flames danced at her very whim, forming shapes, letters, changing colors, and never burning out of control and hurting anyone. At first she could only control flames already burning, but she soon was able to create and control her own fires. Shortly thereafter, she applied to the Magic "Academy" and was rejected. Undeterred, she applied again, and again, being rejected each time. Far from home and running low on coin, the girl was a few days away from giving up and returning to her village. It wasn't until a chance encounter with the master of the school that her fortune finally changed. She quite literally (and she swears to this day accidentally) bumped into him in the market. The master must have seen something in the budding student, for he asked her if she would be interested in becoming his apprentice, a question she couldn't answer "yes!" to quickly or loudly enough.
Prone to occasional, yet violent bursts of anger, particularly towards people she feels are acting "haughty". She is also hardworking, eager to learn, and quite honest, about herself, her thoughts, and her ambition to become the best damn fire mage the world had ever seen.

Character Name: Hai
Forum Account: Vina-Fran
Magic Speciality: Light
Gender: Female
Appearance: Tiny girl with dirty blonde curls and pale blue eyes that are often skyward. Her round fair face is often in a hopeful but lost look. Once caught daydreaming she'll burst into a sheepish smile and look around at her surroundings. She chooses to wear pastel colors, that hang losely from her slender frame. She stands three inches over five foot, and prefers the comfort of slippers, or barefoot if the weather permits. She often wanders off and reappears just as suddenly and silently.
Backround: Hai is named by the first word she uttered to those who discovered her wandering the grounds. She can't rightly recall anything about herself, but that doesn't bother her. She knows for a fact she fell down, but not sure from where or how high. She's often caught looking skyward, even inside, and lost in thought. Without being directly addressed, she'll silently listen, and eventually drift off into her own world. The only thing that seems to ground her is confrontations and conflicts, often being brought to tears as she tries to calm the participants involved. However, any real teasing toward her she easily shrugs off with a giggle or loses herself in her own thoughts. Her focus on magic is fleeting, but when she does focus, it sparks to life, and then sputters out. She has come to a happy medium of being in a trance-like state when wielding the art, though it often leaves her unaware of anything not dealing with the spell.

I don't know if there is a word, per se.
There's Mahotsukai, which is used in rokugan, but it doesn't actually translate to anything specific, I can't quite find a translation, but I think it just means something like "sorcerer". It's only within the setting that it really carries such negative implications.

Gender: Female

Backround: A clumsy girl with her nose always in a book, her grades were average, but when she stumbled across certain storybooks, she began to envision great things, drawing runes imagined in her head. Everyone said she had a great imagination, until the runes began to have the effects that she claimed they would. Virtually unnoticed at first, she was finally recognized when she created a healing rune to help an injured classmate, after which she was quickly moved to an apprenticeship for her magical talents.
Sometimes considered underpowered compared to casters that can wield magic without runes, her natural ability to create working runes caught enough attention that despite a complete lack of ability to cast without runes, her apprenticeship continued unquestioned.

Ground Floor Map
http://www.ulmf.org/bbs/picture.php?albumid=301&pictureid=4912
Ground Floor Rooms Description
Entrance Hall - A grand hall designed to show off wealth and make a good impression on guests, the walls are lined with artwork and the floor paved in marble. Impressive looking, but there isn't much here of any use to the students in this battle.
Grand Staircase - Another eyesore built into the house for the purposes of flaunting wealth, an oversized and elaborate staircase dominates another open hall. For the purposes of the game, we have shortened the area one can use to go between floors to a nice small area, but rest assured the staircase does indeed take up much of the room.
Lounge - In theory a relaxing room where one can quietly read, but in practice this room has become somewhat of a hub between the libraries and the student rooms, so traffic through here is fairly consistent.
Novice Library - A library that mostly contains books suitable for beginners. All of the apprentices know this library very well, and it seems unlikely that they'll find much in the way of helpful books for this battle there...
Classroom - A room where mostly theoretical lessons are taught. It has many desks and some limited supplies in it, and a space down the back for more practical pursuits.
Ballroom - Formally a grand ballroom for entertaining dinner guests and dance. Nowadays, the large open space is used as a practice area for practical magic, due to the minimum of collateral damage that can be incurred and the space to move around.
Storeroom - The only storeroom the students have access to, it contains a wide variety of items to aid in magics. Of course, how many of this will be useful for summoning is unlikely to be too high, but one never knows...
Stairs Down(Off limits) - The stairway down to the basement level. Students are not permitted here.
Servants Quarters(Off limits) - Rooms reserved for the Master's familiars. Students are not permitted into this area either usually, mostly as said familiars deserve a place where they can be alone.
Kitchen(Limited Access) - The kitchen from which meals are prepared. Generally one is only allowed into the kitchen when one has kitchen duty; where they work as a kitchen hand for Sadranel, a small pixie familiar of the master's who has great talent in cooking. She is a harsh supervisor who has little patience for mistakes but the meals she prepares are truly magical.
As there is no kitchen duty during the battle, this area is technically off limits.
Dining Hall - A grand dining hall with a large table. The only magic in this room is the meals that are served.
Main Library - The main Library of the manor, reaching the up onto the first floor. A wide variety of books on magic line the shelves, and there are plentiful desks to study at.
Master's Study (Off limits) - The private study of the master. Contains advanced books and is his private sanctum.
Student Rooms - The personal rooms of the students of the manor. It's considered impolite to enter another's room without permission.
Bathroom - A large, luxurious bathroom, for all your grooming needs.
First Floor Map

First Floor Rooms Description
Landing - The top of the grand staircase, leading out into the hallways of the first floor.
Main Library (1F) - The railings around the double storied library, with a gap in the middle one can use to view the floor below.
Master's Bedroom (Offlimits) - The master's bedroom. As with his study, likely contains a number of advanced books and reagents. And as with his study, is off limits to students.
Conservatory - Glass roofed area that functions as an indoor garden. Used for studies in herbology and potion making and for growing useful plants for magical activities.
Astrology Lab - Small area also glass roofed. Contains an expensive and antique telescope as well as some books on reading the heavens.
Alchemy Lab - Area dedicated to alchemy and the blending of magic and science. While compared to a modern lab, the equipment here would be described as archaic, it nevertheless suits its purpose.
Rune Workshop - A workshop dedicated to rune carving and runic magics. It has a great deal of benchspace and a good number of tools.
Summoning Library - Normally offlimits, this library as recently been opened up to the pupils for their battle. The books here no doubt contain a great deal of knowledge on the arts of summoning.
Balcony - An outdoor area with plenty of seats that one could use to quietly study.
Parlour - An indoor area with plenty of seats that one could use to quietly study. Also has a few bookcases of its own, although they are notoriously a scattering of random things not properly put away by those who borrowed them from elsewhere.
Reinforced Practice Room - A heavily reinforced room for practising highly destructive spells.
Infirmary - Managed by Nurse Flora, a familiar of the master, this place treats all injuries incurred and usually has a supply of healing tonics and the like as well. It is unlikely that it will be permitted to be used by the entrants to the battle, however.
Bathroom - An upstairs bathroom. For when downstairs is too far.

As we can see, I'm a little behind schedule. The ground and first floor maps of the manor have gone up, and very shortly I'll have a description of the rooms added as well. I will probably start the game before I do the basement because the players will be beginning in the summoning library, which is on the first floor. But it will be done as soon as I can.
The basement is, as a note, entirely off limits to students, which is one of the reasons it's a lower priorities; going down there is in violation of the rules and getting caught will result in penalties.

Mkay. Here I have for you, a key to identifying players on the map.
http://www.ulmf.org/bbs/picture.php?albumid=301&pictureid=4926
As we can see, each player has been assigned a colour. Certain players might be a little hard to spot in certain rooms, but all of them are deemed visible enough by myself. (I hope no one's colourblind)
The actual game maps themselves will be personalised and the room names removed from them as to not interfere with the grid. Each turn you'll get a map of your immediate surroundings; basically everywhere you could possibly move to plus a few extra squares for vision and the like.
As we can see, the @ symbol represents a person. It will also represent any of the master's familiars, I will make an effort to describe and if applicable name said familiars for you in the PM I send your personal map to.
Likewise, the $ symbol identifies a summon by one of the competitors in this battle. It will appear as their colour if you know whom it belongs to, either by witnessing them ordering it, summoning it, etc.
If you do not know whom it's master is, however, it will simply appear as the black unidentified symbol instead.

This thread will list both the game rules and contest rules.
Game Rules mean OOC rules, which both contain how the game works, and things one is not permitted to do in game.
Contest Rules are IC rules, which are mostly restrictions that a character is free to try and bend or break, but violating them may have consequences if caught.
Game Rules
First and foremost, each player is not permitted to share information learned within the game OOC. As information is your greatest weapon, it might seem strange to share it at all, but information can also be your greatest bargaining chip. That said, one does not need to necessarily post the information publicly, you are free to interact with players in your range in a turn via PM.
Likewise, one is restricted from using OOC information IC. If one, for example, learned something OOC by reading the interactions of a pair of characters they weren't present for IC, one is obliged not to make use of this information until they learn it themselves. And please do not try to justify using it by virtue of common sense, such as "Well of course water attacks are effective against a fire creature, I figured that out myself" because in the world of magic, common sense does not apply and things are frequently not what they seem. So even if it seems like completely obvious information, I ask that you do not use it.
As mentioned previously, characters may normally move 10 squares per turn. You cannot move through a square occupied by a bookshelf, table/desk, bed or storage area, nor can you end your movement on a stairway tile. You also cannot move through squares occupied by summons, although you can move through other players squares and those of most NPCs (will specify if one is blocking your path).
Players may also take up to 3 actions in a turn. An "action" is doing something, be it searching a bookshelf, reading a book at a reading area, searching a storage area, casting a spell etc. Some things, such as drawing magic circles for summoning, may take multiple actions to complete, but most are completed with one. Talking to NPCs or other players does not take an action.
Another note about studying books, any other player within 2 squares of you at any point during the turn you study has a chance of spying over your shoulder and learning some or all of the information themselves, at no cost of action. If multiple people study at the same desk/table, each will learn the full info studied at that desk/table. This makes finding a private place to study ideal.
When you send in your turn, please give step by step directions for your turn. For example: Move N3, E2, search bookcase, Move W2, S3, study book (x2).
You can carry a maximum of 5 items at a time. You may leave behind 1 object at a bookshelf, reading area or storage area as part of your action interacting with it. (This means that even with 5 items, if you know what you're going to leave behind at the bookshelf, you can still pick out a new book and replace the one you're discarding there wihtout costing extra actions.)
One may also spend an action to discard/put away any number of objects to an adjacent area. You can also discard objects anywhere, however doing so violates contest rules. Objects discarded on the floor will be marked with a * and can be picked up by other players (or NPCs).
Each turn players will be notified of their current health, mage armour and mana in percentages. Mage armour functions as a shield to a player against attacks, and as long as it is up a player will take no damage to their health. You can spend an action and some mana to replenish your mage armour, increasing its status by 50% (to a max of 100%) but you cannot recast a full strength mage armour until yours is broken.
When a player reaches 0% health, they are eliminated from the game. A character's health will not restore over time, although spending actions at a bed will restore it slightly, healing spell can replenish it, and certain items can also restore health.
A character mana will replenish slowly over time, although there are certain items that can be consumed to replenish it.
As mentioned previously, if you wish to cast a spell, please PM the GM the details of the spell for approval before you do so. This ensures I don't have to veto it after you've done it. If your spell is heavily related to your spec, I will almost certainly approve it; I just want to know what I'm dealing with and be able to assign appropriate cost.
Each player will have their own RP thread for ease of sorting, rather than having a different thread for every single room. For players wishing to RP together (who are thus in the same place), either thread is acceptable, although please pick only one. And as noted above, while you are free to read other players threads for your own enjoyment, please refrain from using any knowledge contained there you do not know.
Contest Rules
The battle is to yield. Once a player surrenders or is rendered unconscious they will removed from the manor.
Casting all magics except those related to summoning, healing spells, and mage armour is forbidden.
Entering restricted areas is forbidden.
The master's familiars will serve as his eyes, ears and hands. Their judgements are absolute and attacking them is explicitly forbidden. (As is attacking the master).
Objects are not to be left discarded upon the floors. This was not permitted before the battle and will continue to be the case.
A true magi shows restraint. Destruction of property shall reflect poorly on the participant.
This battle is to yield or unconsciousness. There is no need to finish off an unconscious or surrendered opponent and doing so will be frowned upon most heavily.
The chief steward would also like it noted that mess should be kept to the barest minimum.
If you would like clarification or have any questions regarding rules, feel free to post below.

And so the students gathered in the previously forbidden summon library. Great bookcases fill the rooms, packed with various tomes and books, and the wallpaper decorates the room a gentle olive.
"All here? Good, we can begin." declares the master, from the entrance. His face is devoid of all emotion, although he slowly strokes his beard with his hands. "First, I would like to go over the rules (http://www.ulmf.org/bbs/showthread.php?t=7295) of this battle, so we all know where things stand," he began, and proceeded to do just that.
"Now then, as you know, this is to be a battle of summoning. Hence, this summoning library will be perhaps your greatest resource. However, as you are no doubt aware, secrecy is also a great tool, and there are plenty of books elsewhere that will be able to aid you in your pursuits. The path you take is yours to choose; BUT I do highly recommend you at least learn the basics of summoning before you try anything. These shelves here in the middle, marked with stars, have been sorted to contain only the basics of summoning. They are an ideal starting place."
"Right. I feel there is no more to say, so let us begin. Both I, and my familiars, will be around." he concludes, and raising one hand, gives a click of his fingers, disappearing. "Oh, do remember that we are watching you..." his voice echoes behind after he has left. Thus, the six students were left in the library and the Battle for Ascension had begun.

Not sure. I think everyone wasn't aware we'd begun because of no official announcement and you said that you had issues for the next week and a half.
Might be an idea to get everyone still playing to post up within a deadline and allow for late entries. Unfortunately, games that take too long to start are often stunted by player boredom.
Additional edit stuffs:
How often do you expect turns to roll over?
Looking at your map again, your movement system almost seems a little too constricting, it'll take me two turns just to get to a nearby room of my choice from the summoning library. And that's assuming I want to leave the library at all yet, since odds are, my character has already thoroughly explored most of the rest of the mansion/school/whatever. It almost doesn't make sense to bother leaving at all.

If I may foolishly suggest... perhaps a central thread for starting at the library would be best, letting everyone act and interact freely until we leave the library and things move into our individual threads?
Kathy
6th November 2010, 23:07
(Due to a few uncertainties, I'm hoping Inky won't mind me taking the liberty of giving everyone a joint starting thread.
We're all beginning at the summoning library, as listed on the "first floor" map of the resources thread. The master has just informed us of the rules, and we're all free to converse, make deals, and generally act together until we begin to leave the library.
Please post your ACTIONS (what you do for the turn, 10 moves / 3 actions) in your individual threads so Inky can review them more easily. But RP fluff, conversations, and whatever else we get into, I encourage to put here until you move out of the library, at which point your individual thread will become your main thread. That way we don't need to all read each other's threads back and forth to get started.
As players run across each other beyond the library, it will be up to you to decide which thread to pick up as the main one.)

The young runemage looked more than a little frazzled, as usual, as the master gave out instructions. Her shirt haphazardly buttoned up wrong, and mostly held together by the sweater she wore over it. If she wasn't such a prodigy of creating runes out of standard spells, she would have never made it this far.
She wasn't entirely sure what to say to the master as he made the announcement, they'd been together for a while, all of the students had been. When he left, it felt less like a gracious act, and more like a test that was about to get underway... 'Thank you master, for... dropping this test on us to see who casts the most ugly thing to wipe out our fellow classmates first.' she thought playfully to herself, actually giggling aloud for several moments as she pranced up to the bookshelves, her false cat-aspects swaying happily. She'd become far less clumsy after having created them for herself, often catching her balance by her tail, or hearing people with those pointed ears before she stumbled face first into them... it was hardly an advantage, barely keeping her on par with the other students. Neither she, nor, she hoped, the master or her classmates, even considered it magic anymore, it was simply a part of the ditzy girl.
Lilly watched the other students passively as she began to rifle through the central tomes, spending a moment exploring the bookshelves, each one in turn (do we search them all, or have to search each square independently?).
"So... Who's up for a trip to the lounge for some casual studying? Or we could head to the dining hall for some light snacking while we work..." she began to offer, unsure if the others would take her up on her suggestion or not... this was a competition after all, but she quietly hoped that if even a couple of them worked together, they might put themselves at an advantage to the others who're more inclined to study on their own in private.
Though each of the students was headstrong and firm willed, they had mostly learned to work around one another, even help each other when required, or so she hoped. 'Whoever declines the offer is hurting themselves more than hurting the rest of us... which means this whole thing may come down to dirty tactics around the study group we form...'

(Actions: Roam the library. Lillian flitters about left and right across the map, expending her turn watching what the others are doing, while using her 3 actions to search the shelves, starting with the ones in the center. - If each square must be searched individually, she'll search 3 of the 4 for her turn. Otherwise, she searches the center first, then the two side stretches of bookshelves.
Direct actions: Starting at around 74:AA, all 10 movements are generally pacing the area directly in front of the shelves. (1N, 1E, 3N, 3W, 2S generally just grabbing at any books that look of interest.)
3 actions: Explore shelves, search for books. (If each shelf must be chosen individually, then she searches the bottom right, top right, and top left of the central 4 shelves as she passes each one.)

Kinda thought the game update thread was pretty much an official announcement of commencing. Apparently no one else did however. As far as my time issues, that really only affects my ability to post things, not everyones :P
Might be an idea to get everyone still playing to post up within a deadline and allow for late entries. Unfortunately, games that take too long to start are often stunted by player boredom.
I've found as soon as I start having players drop out uninterested, or can't be bothered updating, my own enthusiasm plummets. Ideally, we won't reach this point.
How often do you expect turns to roll over?
Once I no longer have an insanely busy schedule, at least often once a week. More if I get everything I need faster.
Whether or not you leave is your decision, but see the part in the game rules where characters will automatically look over others shoulders if they get too close when studying. In order to keep your information secret, you'll need to get away from the others, but obviously, a lot of the useful information is in the summoning library. As far as the movement restriction, I feel increasing it would only lead to problems, as if one player ends up with an active summon before the others, they could fly around the place and get in range to attack people far too easily.
And on the matter of bookcases, yes, you need to specifiy exactly which bookcase you search.

Heh... it's okay, I think it's safe to assume we're all in the library, and we can post in as we'd please.
In response to your comments on increasing movement: That's not really what I meant. I rather meant I just feel a little constrained by the movement system vs. what I see Lillian doing. It feels a bit hindering to rigidly march to each square during a turn. It's mostly just my notion of RPing vs. tactical strategic movements.
I'd want to move the same "distance" each turn, perhaps, but be allowed a bit more freedom of actions within a given section.

Deneb, with Roger floating over her shoulder, looked around at the other students after the master took his leave. Currently she was wearing a red tube top and black skirt with an incongruous witch's cape and hat that she had worn for halloween. She'd changed herself that morning into a short, somewhat busty girl with pointed ears with hair matching her top.
Making a childishly rude gesture at the space once occupied by the master and muttering "I could do that too, if he ever taught us." Walking over to the books next to Lillian, Deneb also started looking through the books, focusing on a single shelf before turning around and looking at the books behind her, the ones not for beginners.
With an impish grin, she leaned over to Lillian and whispered to her. "Hey Lil, your panty's showing." Even though it wasn't, Deneb loved to tease the ditzy runemage. Behind her, Roger let out the sigh of a long suffering friend. "But sure, we can form a super team!" She punched her fist in the air exaderatedly. "You can be my sidekick."

"Yeek!" Lilly cried out softly, grabbing at her skirt and tugging it every which way to try to cover up her panties, which weren't showing...
The end result is that after a good amount of tugging, her tail got snagged just over the hem of her skirt and she angrily began to wave it until it snaked free from it's position, causing her skirt to sag in the back and actually leave her panties exposed, as she frustratedly gave up, tugging her sweater down in the back to try to cover herself instead, causing it to pull tight in the front and show off her busty nature. Not anywhere near the other woman, who purposely changed for the occasion, but still, well stacked, as her shirt beneath her sweater seemed to open up more, showing she'd missed more than a few buttons in her haste to not be late to the opening of the summoning library.
Flustered and turning red in the face, she bowed as gracefully as she could, before mumbling softly, "I didn't mean like that... I just... figured... everyone would enjoy studying together for once... since... ya know... it's a new subject... something none of us have done before..."

Deneb hid her face in a book to hide her mirth at the other girl's panic and ensuing wardrobe malfunctions. "Th-there. It... it looks f-fine now." Deneb found it hard to speak properly from the suppressed laughter, but she forced herself to calm down and put an arm around the other girl. "You know, I like your idea better. Let's grab some books and head off to the lounge." Looking around at the other students, Deneb extends the offer to them, as though it were her idea. "Anyone else coming?"
Really, Deneb wanted to work with Lillian, possibly forming a team to fight together until they were the last two. What would happen then, even Deneb wasn't sure.

Quietly Morgana started perusing the shelves, trying to find a section that would catch her eye at being related to her darker powers. Idly she'd also try to watch the other students, just not directly. She didn't want to make any attempts to get into contact, but she wanted to get a general idea what people were looking for in summons before she got her own familiar.

Cassandra chuckled at the back-and-forth between her fellow students. "Really, Lilly, you should know by now that Deneb's only teasing you." She smiled warmly at the slightly taller rune mage. Today the fire mage had on, apart from her characteristic gloves and locket, a knee-length brown skirt and a white sleeveless blouse. Nothing exactly revealing, but not prudish either. At Deneb's suggestion of working together the blonde girl nodded enthusiastically. "Of course we should work together, we'll learn more that way than we ever could on our own. I'll grab a couple beginner's books, and one of the harder ones so we won't need to come back when we're ready for it."

"Bah, speak for yourselves." Delilah rolled her eyes at the antics of her fellow students. Quickly grabbing three books off the shelf, ones related to each other on first glance, she strode towards the door. "Start off working together, if you like, but eventually you'll be fighting each other anyways. Only one person can be the master's successor, after all."
Delilah stalks out of the library, her chosen texts tucked away in her shoulder bag, heading for her bedroom to study in solitude. It's obvious that Delilah dislikes the idea of being tied down, "educating" youngsters in the rudiments of magic. On the other hand, being master of the academy would give her a head start towards joining the rich and powerful...

Lilly smiled happily after her outfit was "fixed", nodding to the other girl, "Thank you..." she whispered meekly, her tail sliding down her leg and half curling around her ankles shyly. "I uhm.. am grabbing some books... it's a bit hard to tell what's what... but as long as we don't all grab too many copies of the same thing, we should do well studying together, right?"
Grabbing several books from the central shelves, hoping to get something useful and unique with each choice, she was quietly happy that at least some of the others were going to come with her. Even if someone else was claiming credit for her idea, she had high hopes of getting a leg up by doing the basics as a team before they split off to study their own things each in turn.
"...you know delilah... you're not as great as you think..." she found herself muttering as the fiery mage rushed off, biting back making more remarks. "I know it's going to be everyone for themselves eventually... but I don't see why we can't at least help each other get started... right?" she tried to defend her idea to no one, as the two girls with her already seemed to like the idea, while the others who didn't like the idea, weren't going to be swayed by a few casual words tossed from the ditzy seeming catgirl.
Lillian was completely sure that if not for having shown her mastery over runic magic on several occasions, none of the others would respect her even in the slightest... though with her panties hanging out and her shirt half falling off after such an easily played prank, it was hard to think that any of the other girls respected her at all for that matter.

Hai had been, as usual, quite stuck in her own little world, those eyes staring upward, most likely missing the extravagant exit of their tutor and most of what was going on around her. As the voices of reality began to creep back into her consciousness, her eyes only widened further and further, her small features at the brink of trembling to keep her off-focus focus.
She finally crashes to reality once more, with a few blinks and a darting gaze around the room. She giggles and smiles with a sweet voice, "Oh... We're starting?" She sweeps up her sun dress and coasts around the bookshelves, barefoot as usual. Her toes wriggle against the floor as her eyes, dancing in and out of concentration, scan the towering shelves of knowledge. She frowns her features, furrowing her brows.
"Oh, just get me to the right book for now..."
She whispers to herself, chewing upon her bottom lip as she wanders in front of the shelves, but finding herself pulled more and more to the more gentle and subtle spells.

To clear up a few things:
Firstly, I need to know which bookcase you search, but I don't need to know the exact square of said bookcase. Just to clarify. So in the summoning library, the four in the middle count as one bookcase, while the other bookcases in the room are all separate.
This means that you can access the same books as anyone else searching that bookcase from any adjacent square; there are no super spots on a bookshelf.
Secondly, I'd like to point out to people trying to search for specific things: Can you tell where the dark magic section is by looking at the map? The section on demons? The section on fluffy bunnies? Obviously, the answer is no. Likewise, the books on these shelves are a mess, they may be vague sorted, but there's a reason you're spending an action digging through it to find something useful. The books you obtain are randomly generated, although you'll never obtain a book you've already read or is in your inventory unless there are no other useful books on the shelf (something that may occur in certain bookcases in some of the more specialised rooms) Only through word of mouth and trial can you actually determine what kind of books one can find where.
Oh, and you'll only ever pick up books related to summoning. I've got enough books to deal with without adding in other magic.

You can see in the distance, Nurse Flora of the infirmary, one of the master's familiars. She is a tall and thin woman, and always rather strict as you'd expect from the saying "all healers are tyrants". Her eyes are a deep brown and hair hair is bright pink; her skin has a slight greenish tint, and she obviously has a strong affinity for plants, given that the infirmary walls are carpeted in vine growth. While a potent healer, the master did specify that her skills would not be available during the battle.

Lillian searches the center bookcase once more to see if any other unique books are there, then heads up and searches the northern bookcase (the 2 space wide horizontal one) twice.
After that, she heads to leave the library.
I'd give specific space movements again, but it seems as if that's almost a futile gesture since I didn't end my turn where my movements would've stopped me last time anyhow.

(Bit of a slow start, but hopefully things will pick up.)
Lilly scampered around the library for another moment, almost sniffing out the books that she wanted, as she quietly hugged each one to herself with a tight squeeze. She adored books. Out of all her ditzy clumsiness, she'd never dropped a book, and seemed to have catlike reflexes about rescuing any book in danger.
Blowing a bit of dust off the books she had, she quickly called out, "What's everyone finding? It'd be useless for our little study group to bring the same stuff over and over... Let's grab a couple more books each, then we'll rush off... We'll meet up at the lounge, then spend a bit of time studying together before we split off and continue research on our own. Alright everyone?"

Between her own impatience, and just a little less talent than she thought she had, Delilah has recent memories of the plant-healer, soothing her burns after a "heating" rune turned out to be a "burning" rune. Delilah also has recent memories of being scolded by said plant-healer, being told "not to move! Not so much as a single muscle till I say so!" while sitting with a poultice on her hands.
Tchah, she's just waiting to heal the losers. I wanna see what's in these books.

"I've got...let's see...." Cassandra looks at the spines of the three books in her arms, dusting one of them off to read the title. Fortunately, it was relatively quiet, otherwise she probably would have had to yell to be heard by Deneb, as she was on the other side of the room. As it was, the distance between them caused her to raise her voice slightly. "Intro to Summoning Three and Basics of Demons from the Beginner's Section, and The Nymph, Volume Two from the Advanced Section."
"What about you Lilly?" She didn't up from her books until after she'd leaned around the corner of the bookcase she was standing next to and spoke in Deneb's general direction. "And you, Deneb?" She then noticed that Lilly was standing right on the other side of the bookcase. "Oh, sorry about that, Lilly. Didn't mean to speak over you. Well, through you. Oh, you know what I mean." She smiled warmly at the dark-haired mage.

I think the problem is, it's a minimum of three turns (grab books in summoning library, study books at summoning library desk, cast summon in/near summoning library) before anybody can do anything to any other player that's not fluff. And at one update per week, that's most of a month gone by.
For a structured, rule-based system like this, you need a much more frequent update schedule - once a day would be preferable, if you didn't just move to running it over a chat protocol and putting out "updates" every few minutes. Each turn has a limited set of actions, which means people don't need to think as much about what they'd like their character to do, and can easily plot out what future turns will look like.
A freeform system, like MGI, can work with a slower update schedule, because a given update can cover anything from a few seconds to a big chunk of a day, depending on what the players and the DM are up to.
So... if you want my two cents' worth... declare - NOW - that you're moving to a much more frequent update schedule, and the next update will be coming one time period from now. If anybody doesn't post, then they don't move for the turn. Cut down on the description, or pre-write it - you've got one character who's triggered anything more complicated than "you retrieve three books", and that was merely a generic description of an NPC which you can copy for anyone else who spots that NPC.
I get the feeling that you were trying to create a system of about the same complexity as ODiC (http://www.ulmf.org/bbs/forumdisplay.php?f=158), maybe a little more... if you don't mind me tooting my own horn, you could look at some of the threads there for clues as to how to update more easily, e.g. everyone got the same start-text, the same first-encounter text, fairly similar second-encounter text, etc. etc.

I appreciate the thought and all, but the initial problem with update speed was my workload at the time, which has vanished. I'd be happy to update as often as daily, if players could keep up. Unfortunately, they can't.
I fundamentally dislike moving ahead without players because it upsets me; especially in a game such as this where the players are pitted against one another. It makes them far more likely to figure they don't have a chance and they might as well give up, for starters, which results in players dropping, which further upsets the GM and makes them less enthusiastic about updating.
Another problem is I'm spoilt as a GM. Though it has been years, I'm still used to a community that not only expects a daily update schedule, but will spend a good deal of hours in a day discussing and plotting about the game, both in and out of character. Naturally, such a community is not possible in a place where people work for a living or have serious studies, but even slowing it down, this place hardly has the same level of enthusiasm about games in general. It just feels lacklustre by comparison, and combine that with the lack of posts, and you can see my waning interest in running this circus.

eh. As I said, I had no map on original post, and then you kinda just slammed my girl's face into the bookcase a dozen times as I tried to fudge the beginning so we could get going.
Anyhow... As for update schedual. Let's have an interest check relaunch about who would be willing to play with one update daily (possibly two until we get into major actions?).
I've already created a study group amongst the girls, hoping to abuse our ability to read over each other's shoulders, so to speak. I thought that was a fairly clever beginning.
Plus I already have quiet evil plans brewing, but nothing that can really kick off yet because we're still sitting at the library.

Dice Mechanics
The general gist of it is when a roll is made, you'll have a number based on how good your character is at something, possibly modified by the situation providing conditions that aid or hinder. I roll 2d6 (2 six sided dice) and if the number I roll is equal to or less than your number, you succeed. If it is higher, you fail.
I then roll a third dice to determine how well/dramatically etc. you succeed or fail, with the higher the number resulting in a more beneficial or detrimental outcome.
A player may also request to increase or decrease the risk of a roll, for greater benefits. Although subject to approval, a player can request to modify the risk, adding or subtracting to the difficulty of the roll to apply the same result to the third dice. For example, a player can pull a risky manoeuvre, adding to the difficulty of it, but it also automatically increases how dramatic the result is by 1 step, for better or worse. Likewise, they may be able to lessen the risk and make it easier, but the result will be less favourable if it succeeds, although less detrimental if it doesn't. All of this is pending approval, make the request in your post and the GM will let you know whether or not he accepted it when he posts the reply, or decides that the action doesn't warrant altering the risk of the roll.
There are also two exceptions to the above. One is if a triple 1 is rolled; this represents the holy trinity and calls for divine intervention. However subtle it may be, events will shift to favour the angelic. The other is if a triple 6 is rolled. This represents the number of the beasts, and Lucifer himself will take a hand in events somehow, undoubtedly aiding the forces of darkness.
Essence
Essence is power. Power is essence. Most spells and some magical items require essence to use, and one can spend essence to affect die rolls favourably as well, each point spent both lowering the difficulty by one. Angels regain a point of essence each day at dawn, demons regain it each night at sunset. Angels and Demons both may also gain extra ways to regain essence which is covered by their "rites".
Rites
Rites are used to regain essence by performing an action that displays a connection with your superior. You may also be awarded rites by other demon princes, although accepting a rite from someone your superior doesn't like is not recommended. These allow you to perform a certain action in order to regain essence rather than waiting until the next time you naturally regain it.

Ah, yes, Ms. Anilisea. I've got the results of your SEE back and would be happy to finalise things with you," came a voice from nowhere and yet everywhere inside the empty white room she had been waiting in.
"Your options are as follows..."
Strongest Match
Lilim - A daughter of Lilith. Typically sultry and seductive, their have a natural gift for feeling what someone wants and promising them it for a favour at a later date; which their magics will attempt to force them to make good on. However, they must be careful as if someone manages to decline their request for a return favour, it weakens their very being until they can extract their owed debt.
They work well with humans and other demons alike, they're very friendly and excel at getting along with almost everyone. However, the one thing they value most is freedom, so they despise anything that would strip themselves or others of freedoms. Due to this, they only trade in equal favours as well; although to the people involved it may not seem particularly equal.
Other Matches
Mercurian - Angelic friend of man, they have an affinity for mortals matched by none, are excellent at adapting to the mortal world and have a natural gift for sensing relationships and politics between groups of mortals. At their best, they can read a mortals entire being in complete detail at a glance.
Being so close to mortals, other angels may not fully understand the Mercurians, but most accept them for what they are and their role as guiding shepards of humanity. However, violence is the antithesis of the Mercurian's sense of being; for them to indulge in any violence personally against any but a demon will stain their soul. That's not to say they cannot advocate violence, even the best Mercurians know when to step back and let the warrior angels take care of things.
Impudite - "The Takers". Some of the nicest people people a mortal will ever meet are Impudites. Everyone thinks they're swell folks and for their part they truly, devoutly love the throng of humanity; and they're so damn charming that they'll not only steal the warmth of man's heart, but the energies of their soul as well. They have a natural gift for both charming their way into the hearts of mortals, and robbing them of essence.
Their ability to steal essence even extends as far as other spiritual creatures, although due to the strength of creatures such as demons and angels the difficulty to do so is much greater. However, their love for mortals is so great that they cannot bear to see them destroyed. Personally killing one, through either action or inaction, will eat away at their soul.

They see the value of all things in moderation and strive to not let any personal feelings they have affect their judgement. Their gift as that of emotions; they can sense what someone is feeling inside, and through that make accurate predictions on how they will act.
That said, they never stoop to taking sides, beyond that which they are instructed to by their superiors. They try not to take a personal viewpoint to the point where letting their own feelings or selfish desires influence their work stains their very soul.
Habbalah - Truly messed up individuals, Habbalah don't consider themselves demons, even faced with the evidence. As far as they're concerned, they're doing the work of God, and that work is to punish mortals. Fallen Elohim consumed by their emotions and twisted, they retain the ability to sense emotions. They retain their calm demeanour, but rather than denying their emotions they let any little feeling guide their actions. They also have the gift of knowing which emotion would cause a given person the most pain, and the power to unleash it upon them.
Unfortunately, their emotional attack, devastating as it can be, doesn't always work. When someone resists this effect, it rebounds back to the creator, who is either consumed by it, forcing it to affect them, or is forced to consume the emotion, allowing them to ignore it although eating away at their soul in the process.

"Ah, I see, so you are indeed a daughter of Lilith..." the voice said.
There was a pause as it seemed to think things over. "Now, it is simply a matter of deciding whom you are best suited to serve..."
"Three names come to mind... as a Lilim, you are of course, able to directly serve Lilith... somewhat. You're not so much a formal servant of hers, as she keeps none, as someone who owes her a great deal by being brought into existence by her. You're free to go where you please and do what you please, but if you get in trouble she likely won't get involved; at least not for free.
Andrealphus has also expressed interest in you. The demonic prince of lust simply adores Lilim and can enhance their powers so that they can automatically detect the needs of a potential victim by physical contact, no rolling required. That said, he stands by that mortals are strictly tools and puppets, it is forbidden to feel sympathy for them and feeling or showing concern for them will eat away at his servants' souls.
Lastly, and perhaps surprisingly, Asmodeus has shown interest in you. Perhaps seeing something in the parts of your soul that don't line up perfectly with the friendly nature of a Lilim, he has offered you a place. This powerful demon prince runs the hellish inquisition, to ensure all demons are working for the good of the established powers. Your job will likely be to uncover any plots against said powers, as well as hunt down rogue demons, and he'll also grant you the power to recognise a fellow Lilim at a glance, and see what state their soul is in. Lastly, he promises to arrange a mortal identity for you so you can casually insert yourself into the world.

"Hmm... so it seems you are an Impudite... and reviewing you information, the following seems to be interested in taking you on..."
"Hrm... quite the find indeed; Kronos seems some promise in you. A rare honour from the most powerful of the demon lords, one step short of Lucifer himself. Working for Kronos, you'll be tasked with assisting mortals meet their fates, that is, the lowest, darkest possible outcome for their life as well as blocking them from attaining their destiny, the counterpart. It is a difficult task, and one that requires a great deal of care, although Kronos offers you the power to sense a person's entire past from their perspective at a touch
Another one who shows interest towards you is Malphas. An urbane and civilised demon, who is easily very likeable and many are quite fond of him. He returns none of this affection and ruthlessly plays people against each other for his own amusement and gain. Serve him, and you'll gain the power to sense how to destroy a person's trust in things around them and in doing so reap an essence motherload from them. That said, it is vitally important that each day for you to cause a conflict or divide between two people as failing to do so will cause your soul to wither.
Andrealphus also seems interested in you. A strict code of regarding mortals as mere tools or puppets is necessary, as showing or even experiencing genuine feelings of sympathy or concern for them will hurt you if you serve him, but his power means that it is much easier both to charm and steal essence from anyone you've slept with.

Other Matches
Seraphim - Described by some more crass creatures as angelic lie detectors, Seraphim are the farthermost from mortals and have the most difficulty dealing with them. They represent truth in its purest form, so much so that it's difficult for them to stand idly by while lies are spoken in their presence, and doing so themselves will taint their soul.
That said, they're not required to always blurt out everything. They have a duty to keep certain secrets and while they may feel an urge to shout out wildly whenever someone lies around them, they acknowledge that this is not always the best course of action and can resist said urges. They remain rather socially awkward, however.
Balseraph - Some of the greatest creatures of deception, Belseraphs have fallen from grace but as is always the case, maintain certain core things, such as their affinity for truth. In their case however, they do not deal in the absolute truth of the world; rather they only deal in their own personal truth, the only thing that matters to them, which they can force upon the world as they see fit. In order to do this, he creates an entire reality within him in which what he says is the absolute, undeniable truth; he then unleashes this truth at someone, forcing his way of thinking upon them.
It is, however, a delicate and sometimes dangerous process. If the would be victim manages to resist the truth, or the truth proves to be contradictory, the manufactured truth is shattered and the Balseraph has just lied, which causes them great pain and damages their very being. They are paranoid and arrogant beings, all wrapped up in their own little worlds.

Closest Match
Cherubim – The archtypical guardian angels, Cherubim are solid and dependable. Their gift is one of devotion, with a touch they can attune themselves to something or someone and thereafter, they will know the direction of it, usually the state it's in, and at times even an aproximation of how far away they are. Occasionally, they will even be able to sense whether or not they are in any danger from events yet to unfold.
However, they are beings who do not betray easily. It is very for one to lift the attunement he has with something, it also requires touch and a successful test of willpower from the angel. Should they fail this attempt to remove it, it will consume their soul a little. They also must not let those they're attuned to die or be destroyed (although in the case of objects, if they can recover the pieces and restore it to the original state, the taint will be absolved) Lastly, they must not betray anything important to them; friends, superiors, ideals or themselves.
Djinn – The result of a guardian angel who's lost his way, the Djinn no longer care about anything except themselves. Or at least, that's what they'd like to be the case. Like their holy brethren, they can attune themselves to people or objects and know where they are, and the state they're in; however, they face less restrictions when doing so. The downside is that their attunement typically isn't as longlasting, being only a number of days, although they can renew it. On occasion, they may find that one of their bonds however is not fading on its own.
Also like their original nature, their soul is scarred by failing to remove a bond they have forged although in their case, it is jarring for them because it clashes with their indifferent demeanour and reminds them in no uncertain terms that they really do care; this is particularly bad as after this occurs, they have the conditions of a Cherubim's devotion forced upon them with the bond in question, and them being destroyed will cause the Djinn yet more pain. They also cannot personally cause harm to those they're attuned to physically or emotionally, although they're more than able to sit back and watch it happen before them. The difference is if the victim asks the Djinn to do it, at which point it's perfectly okay by them and they're relieved of the consequences.
Other Matches
Kyriotates – Angels without a solid form, these beings possess mortals to do their work. Being without their own body, they must quickly find hosts to borrow, although they can possess a number of different creatures based comparative spiritual power. A normal Kyriotates cannot possess more than one human, but they could take a human, a dog and a couple of birds. They have no access to the memories or mind of the entity they borrow, nor is the host aware of what happens, their conciousness falls into a sleep and dreams as long as the angel is there.
There are limitations, of course. Firstly, they cannot maintain possession over someone for too long. They're aware when they take over someone how long they can maintain it, and it usually ranges from 1-6 days, although they can leave sooner. The other thing they need to worry about is the state of their hosts; they cannot leave them in a worse state than they found them, doing so scars their soul. And note that leaving them before they've taken any injury, but when they're in a situation where they're about to get in a lot of trouble still counts; there is more to state than hitpoints alone. Also not something that causes them pain, but if they fail to find a host within a certain period of time, they'll automatically be sucked back to heaven; which typically annoys their superior greatly.
Shedim – The dark reflection of Kyriotates, these demons also have no body of their own and possess mortals to do their work. However their selfish nature means that they cannot bear to divide themselves amongst multiple hosts, they're confined to a single host. Much like when possessed by the angelic counterpart, the host's conciousness floats in a dreamlike state, but unlike the angels they remain on some level aware of what happens while the demon is in control. Furthermore, they're unaware that a demon is controlling them, in their fuddled state, they find themselves convinced that this was their idea.
They work in a different timeline as well; rather than being restricted to a number of days they're aware of as they enter, the Shedim must force the host to do something to corrupt their nature, a new dark deed worse than any previous ones. Each day must be noticeably worse than the previous day or at the end of the day the Shedim must leave or his soul will be damaged by remaining. If their host is knocked unconscious, the demon is expelled, although it takes 30 minutes for them to untangle themselves, and should the host die while the demon possesses them their soul is also marred as they are drawn close to the abyss.

Strongest match
Other Matches
Elohim - Beings of impartiality, these angels seek to look upon the word with objective eyes.

Looking over his choices, Voltus seemed deep in thoughts. However, after a minute or two, he finally decided what would his path be.
He knew it wasn't one of his mostly recomended suggestions but he still silently hovered his finger to the Elohim's part of the results sheet.

"Ah. so it's a Belseraph... or is it? So hard to tell sometimes..." the voice said dryly.
"Regardless, some demon lords have shown interest in taking you on..."
Malphas is one of them, an urbane and civilised demon, who is easily very likeable and many are quite fond of him. He returns none of this affection and ruthlessly plays people against each other for his own amusement and gain. Serve him, and you'll gain the ability to use your power to force an opinion upon someone, who'll emulate it for a number of hours. That said, it is vitally important that each day for you to cause a conflict or divide between two people as failing to do so will cause your soul to wither.
Another one who is interested in what you have to offer is Nybbas, the dark prince of the media. He seeks to control all of mankind through his power and seems to be doing a fairly good job of it at that. Work for him, and you'll be able to use your inherant power to affect media outlets such as televisions, radio and computers, and make them say anything you wish to those watching. Of course, this only affects the singular device, you cannot make every television receiving the program say things, only the one in your presence.
In addition, he'll even offer you a mortal servant from his many legions. Probably some kind of entertainment lawyer, script writer or producer. A highly paid liar in the entertainment industry. But there is one price to pay for all of this; you must devote an hour each day contributing to the growth of the world's media; be it writing articles, webpages etc. Failure to do so will weaken your soul; at least until you catch up on any overdue work.
Lastly, there is Saminga, price of death. Nasty piece of work that one, and not too bright. His preference for undead servants rather than human ones and his paranoid and arrogant nature are but a few of his flaws, but he's not without merit. If you work for him, any mortal you kill with your bare hands will not cause any celestial noise, as killing mortals typically does, allowing you to be a silent assassin of death itself. The only rule he imposes upon you is that you never encourage life; for example, never give wholesome food or drink to a mortal, it only encourages them to keep living.

"Now, let us see whom has shown interest in taking you under their wing..."
If you wish, you may become an angel of David, archangel of the stone. He's taken to guiding and teaching humanity, and his servants focus on encouraging mortals to join together in groups for strength, mutual loyalty and protection. As an Elohim of David, you're attuned naturally to the earth itself, and have absolute sense of direction. You'll always know where you are, which direction you're facing and what time it is.
As his servant, you're expected to teach mankind in the ways of the stone. You must never start a fight, although you're welcome to finish one; if you are provoked into striking first it will dirty your soul. You must also refrain from using ranged weapons, they are forbidden under your teachings.
Another one interested in you is Jean, the archangel of lightning. The micromanaging master of innovation. He and his angels constantly develop new technology in the aims of curbing the selfishness of mankind. As an Elohim of Jean, you would be able to create a palm sized computer at will by spending essence, although it will only last for a matter of minutes. This powerful device requires no power source, is immune to electromagnetic pulses and have unlimited storage space. It also has a constant high-speed wireless internet access, regardless of location, and has cables which can link it up to any non-encrypted computer system. Lastly, when using it, the angel gains a significant boost to their "Computer Use" rolls.
The rules of Jean are simply; do not let celestial technology fall into the hands of mortals before Jean decides they are ready for it; although anything they figure out on their own is fine. And do not allow infernally inspired technology to go unopposed.
Lastly, one could apply for service under Yves, archangel of destiny. He knows all that has been and sees the highest true potential in all, and tasks his angels with helping mortals reach this calling. As an Elohim of Yves, you would be able to automatically succeed on your power to read emotions when physically touching the person you're trying to read.
Opposed by the demons of Kronos, you would have to refrain from assisting a mortal from meeting their dark fate, and instead strive to bring them to the light. If a direct action were to move someone towards their fate, knowingly or accidentally, their souls will become tainted by it.

Anilisea feels the room she's in grow dark, and suddenly, she is standing within an apparent voice. She can perceive nothing but darkness, but emptiness, in every direction, yet somehow she does not feel herself falling. The apparent weightlessness of the situation is short lived, however, as she finds herself now in a dark room.
Her feet now standing upon a rough but firm, cold stone floor, she finds herself in what appears to be some kind of inventory or storage room, albeit a vast one. A faint scream of agonising pain reaches her ears from elsewhere, the first real sound she's heard since she found herself in this place, save the faint flickering of the various torches providing dim light in this almost dungeon-like environment.
And before her, a shelf, one of many in the room, all filled with little iron boxes covered in chains, with plaques beneath them. The one directly before her, however, does not have the chains fastened up, and is sitting open, revealing what appears to be a black and dark red heart, slowly beating despite not being connected to anything. And looking at the dull brass plaque beneath it, Anilisea saw her own name.
"This is your infernal heart," came a voice, noble and commanding yet cold, lacking in passion. "Should your mortal vessel, the shell which houses your being, be destroyed, you will return here. Although the experience will not exactly be pleasant. I can also use this to call you back to me, should I need to, or even find you in the mortal world. As you can see, I keep these very well guarded..."
On that note, the metal box around it closed up, and the chains wrapped themselves around the box, locking into place. "I trust you won't even consider attempting to recover your heart. Such an action would be unforgivably from one of mine...."

The empty white room faded away, and Baphoriel found himself suspended in nothingness. The first thing he noticed through the void was the faint ticking of a clock. And then another. Before long the sound of clocks filled his ears, ranging from the deep tock of a grandfather clock to the barely audible high pitched tick of a wristwatch.
He found himself standing in... actually, it was hard to describe what this place was. A swirling mass of clocks slowly orbiting around some central point of light off in the distance. It was almost too much to perceive, everywhere, all around him, clocks of all shapes and sizes, all ticking to create a chorus of noise, almost seamless in nature.
"Quite a lot to take in, isn't it?" came an old voice from every direction at once, not frail sounding, but simply very tired. "Fate can be very difficult to see clearly, young one. It takes a great deal of aptitude to be able to properly divine the greater picture. Perhaps, in time, you will master this delicate art."

Marim felt the world shift and lurch beneath her, and the next thing she realised, she was in a dark room with a bright spotlight shining down on her from above.
Suddenly, from all around her the sound of a group of people cheering aburptly began, and over the top a manic voice began to accouncem "Let's welcome to the show tonight's contestant, a newly created Belseraph with a wide variety of skills. She can steal your secrets and tell the world, if only they'd believe her." After this line, the somewhat insincere sound of people laughing replaced the cheering briefly. "She's aloof, trustworthy and values job security, it's MARIIIIIIIIIM!"
The spotlight flicked off as other lights came on, revealing a dark blue room. Or rather, a dark blue set, complete with cameras and boom microphones. Before her, beyond the cameras, was a vast, faceless audience, little more than vague humanoid shapes and outlines with no defined features. The unimportant, ignorant masses. Behind her, in the middle of the rich and over the top decorated blue set, was a series of nine television screens, all linked up to project one enlarged picture over all of them. On it, clearly the source of the manic voice, was the face of a skinny man with a receding orange hairline and a pair of thick glasses, giving a smile with all the genuine warmth of a used car salesmen.
"Welcome to the show Marim. I'm your host, the one and only Nybbas. Today, we're going to find out what fabulous prizes we have to offer, and what you'll have to do to win them. Are you ready to play, Marim?"

Baphoriel stared around him at the endless ticking of the clocks. A sad smile crept across his face. Each of these clocks was the inevitable descent of a soul - and there were so many. So very many.
"Such is the way of all things, my Prince. The descent from ignorance, the long trail that we all follow, Celestial and mortal alike. There is no lofty perch from which we cannot fall... and the fall of a mortal who would otherwise rise to such heights... oh, my Prince, it is a beautiful thing. I shall serve you well, and bring many once bright souls to dwell with us here in the abyss. Many beautiful souls."
Baphoriel bent to one knee and bowed his head, letting his long silver hair drape down over his red horns and skin. He was in the presence of the Prince of Fate, Kronos, and he knew that none save Lucifer himself was greater or more worthy of a demon's respect.

The empty white room faded from Voltus' view as he drifted slowly through the void. The sheer emptiness he faced on all sides might have provoked some small concern, but Voltus was moderately certain this was simply a transit, until he reached whatever next destination.
The soft bubbling of a liquid boiling was the first thing Voltus could perceive, as his new location began to reveal itself to him. A sharp stab of forked lightning striking a metal object briefly shot over this, but he already knew this wasn't a concern.
Voltus stood in a doorway into a cluttered room, and before him sat rows of bench tops, all cluttered with various instruments. Nearest to him was a complicated chemistry set, a beaker of something happily bubbling away as the steam from it escaped through another pipe and condensed elsewhere. Each bench seemed to hold a different work in progress, and down the very back of the room was a giant tesla coil, which once again filled the room with the noise of forked lightning as it jumped from one pylon to the next.
The next desk into the room had a pair of robotic arms working on something rather small. From the doorway it was difficult to see exactly what they were doing as they rapidly switched positions and marked the object they were working on with fast flicks of energy.
The bench after that just appeared to be a clutter of various parts and pieces, it was hard to tell just what it was supposed to be devoted for. Ultimately, however, Voltus knew there was little more he could accomplish from standing in the doorway, and nothing here had addressed him yet. The hallway outside was simply a plain white corridor, with doors evenly spaced on either side of it. He could go exploring, but it seemed logical that he had been brought to this room for a reason.

"Arise Baphoriel, for we have work to discuss," came the tired old voice, and cold echoing footsteps intermixed with the sound of a cane striking down softly on a hard floor approached him from behind. Behind him, he could see the tired old man he was wearing, dressed in a smart suit with a bowler hat, and leaning heavily upon his cane, it was the very essence of his master.
"Speaking of lofty perches, I do have a case for you that requires immediate attention," he added. "In a small town by the name of Eden, someone has been gently prodded towards their greater destiny. I would like you to adjust this, it should not be too difficult, given his somewhat delicate position. The man is a painter, and his works reflect his faith. I'm sure you can figure out a way to shatter this," he explained calmly, casually stroking his hand against a clock as it drifted by.
"If you have any questions about your assignment, make them fast. Time is of the essence, after all," Kronos finished with, a dry smile playing across his lips.

"Glad to hear you're such a sport about it. Alright, let's hear about today's prize," with a broad grin, the face disappeared from the screen, and it was replaced by what appeared to be a state of the art laptop computer.
"This little beauty is the latest in human technology. With a quad-core intel processor it boasts a state of the art processor so you can keep up with all your computing needs. New 'Thunderbolt' technology boasts the fastest peripheral support with speeds of up to 10 Gbps and the AMD Radeon graphics processing allow to be 3x faster than previous models. Add to that the stylish look that is sure to attract the envy of others. And, as you may expect, this object counts as a Corporeal Artifact, meaning you'll never lose it or forget where you left it; Demonic Magics will allow you to sense its location at any time, as long as the warranty hasn't expired. This popular brand of laptop could be yours, if you can succeed in just one simple task."
Once again a cheer erupted from the faceless crowd, before quieting down again. "As to your task, it couldn't be simpler. I'll be sending you to sunny Eden, a small town with a humble community, where a local radio show is causing me some problems. The show is broadcasting the word of the Bible and actually inspiring faith in the masses, causing them to tune to his show and listen to his message of peace, love and goodwill, rather than a serious political talk show I've arranged for someone else on at the same time. All you need to do, is discredit or disgrace this radio show so that his listeners lose faith in him and his message, and seek entertainment elsewhere. Think you can handle that, Marim?"

The darkness around him was abruptly changed as blaring beeping of an alarm clock snapped him to attention. He was in a body he recognised instantly as his mortal vessel, a rather unremarkable photography student just transferred to Eden U from interstate. And he seemed to be in an equally unremarkable apartment containing very few things, mostly just a bed and a single desk upon which sat his alarm clock. Upon one wall was a calendar, and he had an adjoining bathroom. The only clothing he seemed to own was the set he was wearing currently*.

He observed himself in the mirror in the otherwise non-descript bathroom. Normal looking, he supposed, but his mortal face had a warming, trust-inducing smile, and he was athletic enough to be in decent shape.
"As my Prince commands," Baphoriel murmured, and taking the keys to his apartment set out from his residence to go in search of the registrar's office at Eden U.

The rest is up to you to discover!" he declares loudly, and his face disappears from the screen, replaced by some kind of infernal logo.
The lights flicked off, and darkness returned, although it didn't last long. She found herself standing in an otherwise empty elevator, travelling between floors as a soft background music track played through slightly crackling speakers. Looking down, she saw that she was dressed* and carrying a small bag. Before she had much more time to explore her new surroundings, the elevator came to a halt with a high pitched *ding* and the doors opened to reveal a young man wearing a satirical shirt and jeans looking expectantly at the the elevator she had just arrived in. Rather than move to get into the elevator, as one might expect, he silently motioned her to follow him.

Invocations (with special thanks to Hellcat)
Someday, you will really need to talk to your boss, or pass on that vital piece of information that will either save, or damn, a soul. To do so, a given celestial has to succeed at an ‘Invocation’, a special ‘ceremony’ designed to get the attention of the big guns.
The difficulty of a summoning a given Superior varies and, needless to say, there is generally a small chance of success. However, there are ways to improve your chances, both generic and personalised for each Superior. The personalised invocation modifiers are not a strict rule, they are more a suggestion of something that would be appropriate for that level of bonus for that superior. Something of equivalent level and relevance to the listed one will confer the same benefit.
Invoking a Superior (and that can be any Superior, not just your boss) takes roughly 10 seconds, with a failed attempt having no effect – except to reduce the chances of another invocation working any time soon.
For example, Rana, a Lilim of Beleth, needs to get in touch with Lilith to pass on a few secrets she’s picked up ‘here and there’ for her – her final payment of a previous Geas. As it is, she only has a slight chance to call the Princess of Freedom – but there are things she can do to increase that chance. She made sure to bring along a canary she’d bought just that morning, the creature fluttering helplessly inside its cage, and it has been well over a year since her previous attempt at such a call.
So, making her way to a quiet garden where she shouldn’t be disturbed, the Lilim sent forth a quiet plea, opening the cage as she whispered into the shadows. There was barely a pause before a beautiful, voluptuous woman stepped into view before her, one eyebrow arched questioningly even as the canary began to sing in a nearby tree...
-----------------------------
In mechanics terms, Lilith’s Chance of Invocation is 3 – this is the number you need to roll on 2d6 to succeed in calling her. A unique third die is used to gauge what mood a given Superior is in, with 1 being a bad day and 6 being strangely cheerful/helpful. Certain artifacts and situations can modify this digit, although, unless stated, only one modifier may be used per attempt. (Listed below.)
The Superior does not need to appear in their Celestial form - in fact they won't if any mortals are in the area. That doesn't stop them using other forms, however.
Lilith's personal Invocation Modifiers are as follows:
-6 – anyone but a Lilim or a Superior
+ Geas Level – if you promise her a favour, Geasing yourself, as you summon her
+1 – A broken pair of handcuffs
+2 – A piece of the Berlin Wall
+3 – A caged creature set free
+4 – A battlefield where a tyrant fell
+5 – A human prisoner set free
+6 – Overthrowing a government – any government
Universal Invocation Modifiers are:
-4 – The Celestial is making futile demands
+2 – Celestial’s corporeal vessel at risk of death
+3 – Celestial at a Tether (Heavenly for Angels, their Master’s for Demons)
+3 – If the celestial is in the presence of any enemy celestials (Diabolicals for the Host, and the Host for Diabolicals. This increases to a +4 if the celestial is in the presence of an enemy Superior!)
-10 – If the Superior being Summoned is not the celestial’s own, unless the celestial is currently on a mission for that other Superior or has an attunement belonging to that Word.
Time since last invocation: -3 if less than a day, or -2 if more than a day but less than a week, or -1 if more than a week but less than a month, or +1 if over a year!
Therefore, Rana has Lilith’s base of 3, +3 for the canary and +1 for the time since her last Invocation, bringing her target up to 7 - much more manageable!

The lights blinded Marim when it came back from the brief darkness. Her eyes quickly adjusted, and she found that she'd taken on a solid, distinct form, opposed to the indistinct, dreamy outline she was made of seconds ago. She saw smooth, pale skin on a thin frame of average height. Her fingers were long, and the nails trimmed, clean and unpainted. In the polished chrome of the elevator, she saw thick, wavy red hair tumble about her face, down to the middle of her back, and twinkling ice-blue eyes staring back at herself, set into a pretty face, with sharp, angular features.
She work plain clothes, to help her blend in. A crisp white dress shirt covered her torso, and brown slacks her legs. On her feet were black socks under black dress shoes. In the way of jewelry, all she had was an unadorned ring on her right ring finger, and an upside-down cross on a chain, hidden under her shirt. All were silver. Under her clothes, she felt the hug of cotton.
When the elevator opened and the man beckoned, she followed, idly checking her bag and pockets.

Upon searching, Marim found her pockets to be quite empty, although the bag contained a small satchel, inside which appeared to be a number of important documents relating to her mortal vessel. Identification, birth certificate, passport, and a small journal of various internet logins and accounts of hers.
The man led her down a hallway with numbered rooms either side, until he stopped at one, pulling a key from his pocket and opening the door and extending his hand into the room. It appeared to be a small room, with a counter top and minibar not far in from the door, a bed a little further into the room. By all appearance, it was a hotel room.

Baphoriel rummaged through his room for a few minutes, finding things such as identification, a birth certificate and other important documents regarding his mortal vessel. He also found a few textbooks related to his studies and a map of the Eden U campus he was enrolled at. Finally, he found the keys to his apartment, allowing him to leave the place secure; by mortal standards anyway.
Jogging down the stairs to the ground floor, he passed a young woman, probably about the same age as his mortal vessel was supposed to be, locking up another room. "Hey, uh, can I ask you a question?" a tentative question came from behind him just moments after he passed.

In the hall, Marim pulled out her ID from the bag, scanning it's glossy surface. A date of birth marked her as a few months under twenty-five years old, and a few identifiers listed the colors of her hair and eyes, a picture she never smiled for, and other little details of little importance. Of greater interest was the name she would answer to in her mortal guise: LIADAN, Mary, Marjorie. Mary Marjorie Liadan.
She almost bumped into her guide when he opened the door, deliberately "not noticing" that he'd stopped. Her gait came to an abrupt stop, and she gave him a small, embarrassed laugh, and a light, teasing brush of a touch on the shoulder and back as she pushed herself away from him, clearing the space between them, and replaced her ID in the bag.
Inside, she pulled up something to sit on to the counter, and then turned to smile expectantly at the man. Waiting for him to close the door, she began talking: "I presume you are the associate my employer told me I would be working with? I'm sorry, but he didn't tell me your name," she said. "What can you tell me about the job?"
She was nigh certain this man was Kurt Able, the servant Nybbas had said he'd give her, but assumptions were dangerous, and she didn't want to say anything revealing if he wasn't.

Baphoriel paused, glancing down at his identity card to quickly remind himself of his cover identity's name - Kieren Doyle - before looking back and up with an inquiring look at the mortal woman. It occurred to him, seeing her come out of an apartment door not far from his own that she was likely one of his "neighbors." It might be just as well to talk to her and solidify his mortal identity.
"Yes," he said, and then took a step back towards her up the stairs. "Certainly."

"My name is Kurt Able," the man said as he strode into the room, sitting down on the corner of the bed and pulling a deck of playing cards from his pocket, beginning to idle shuffle them. "And I assume you're the one I was told to wait for. At that elevator, at exactly 2:14pm, saturday afternoon," he said, sounding slightly anxious at that.
It certainly seemed like this was indeed her "devoted servant", so to speak. If that was the case, she could order him about happily, and he'd have to mentally fight against a direct command to stop himself from carrying it out, pitting his willpower against the control she already had over him. That said, Marim was already absolutely confident in her ability to control him, even against his wishes in the direst of circumstances.
He continued to shuffle his deck of cards, perhaps a nervous habit? "Alright, so I've been told I report to you now. I guess that makes you the boss. So I'll be calling you boss from now on, unless you have some other suggestion. I don't know how you work, but I deal in information. Both acquisition and broadcast thereof. I write for a few different places under a couple of names, although my real name is associated with a satirical website. There's my background for you. As far as our current assignment, I don't really know any details. I was just told to come to this middle of nowhere town and wait for someone today, on the 4th floor of this hotel, outside the elevator at exactly 2:14pm."

The girl was blonde, with a pair of big brown eyes and fine features. She was a small girl, some would say petite, with a slightly athletic build. And she smiled warmly as he turned back to answer her question. "I've just moved into town for the new semester and I don't really know where anything is. I'm horrible with directions and stuff," she admits with a slight laugh.
"Do you know how I get to the gym from here? I remember seeing one coming into town, but I have no clue where it was..."
I'd like to take this moment to remind you that you have no idea where anything is in this town. The only reason you even know there is an Eden U is because of your Role.
However, due to said roll, you're able to make a roll to determine what you know. 2d6 rolled (5,1) for a total of 6, TN being 8 (Role + Int) Check digit rolled a 4.
With this, you know the way to the University, and that there's a gym on campus. You also know the location of a few good hangouts, a good bar, a local coin laundromat and a few places that sell decent quality takeaway food for quite cheap. So basically all the essentials for a student.

"Oh," she replied. The task set to her by Nybbas was quite sparse on details; she'd expected Kurt to know at least something.
"Well," Mary started, "In that case, our employer thinks it not in the best interest for the people of this lovely little town to listen to a certain radio show, run by one Julian Wheeling. As such, we've been hired to move interest, so this man doesn't mislead these people further." She nodded slightly to herself while she spoke, as if affirming to herself each word's validity.
She stood up, grabbing her bag. "Unfortunately, it seems our employer neglected to mention the time and station this show plays, so unless you've heard this show earlier seems we've got some research to do!" She combed her mind on the off-chance Nybbas had implanted the knowledge like he had with Kurt's name, on the off chance she'd just overlooked it.
She got up and walked over to Kurt, offering him her hand. "I don't suppose your phone has internet access? Either way, I don't know the town very well, so why don't we go for a drive?"
(My Balseraph of Nybbas and my lies-as-truth thing don't cause detectable disturbances or eat up essence, right?)

"Phone, laptop, I've always got a few ways to get online when I travel," he informs her, lurching back to his feet. "It shouldn't be hard to find out about this radio program from the information you've got. The tricky part will be finding a way to get people not to tune in to his show. Oh well, if you want to go for a drive Boss, I guess we could go get my rental car," he stretches and generally seems unenthusiastic about it as he climbs to his feet.

Baphoriel allowed himself a sly smile. He loved helping mortals, really he did. He loved giving them directions to follow as well.
"Yes, I know where the gym is. It's right next to the campus. I'm headed that way myself. If you want I could walk you most of the way and point at it when we're close. Might be better than just giving you directions, if you're horrible with them. My name's Kieren by the way."
He held out a hand, knowing that mortals liked to affirm a meeting in this way. In fact, he was less interested in seeming friendly and more interested in using his Attunement as an Impudite of Fate to learn more about this delicious young thing's past. He was not above working on a couple personal projects while carrying out Kronos' orders.

Celestial Disturbance
Every time a celestial interferes with the world, they create ripples and noise. Many of these are too small to notice, but certain actions create enough noise that it can make them stand out to celestials and anyone else able to perceive the "noise" it creates. The following are a list of things that cause these "major", detectable ripples and noise, as well as an idea of how much noise each action takes.
It's important to note that each noise created within a short period of time within the same general place will add to previous ones. A fight between celestials can quickly escalate and leave an cacophony echoing over an entire city, drawing everyone's attention.
Spending Essence: +1 per point of essence
Every point of essence spent by a celestial automatically generates noise. This includes essence spent on dice rolls, as well as that used to power songs or artifacts.
Using Songs: Varies depending on song.
The use of Songs themselves also generates noise, in addition to the noise created by the essence used to power them. The more subtle a song is, the less noise it creates, but likewise songs that dramatically alter the world will have a louder effect.
Entering/Leaving the Mortal World: +number of forces entering or leaving
It almost goes without saying that this would also create disturbances. This also applies to when an angel/demon assumes their "true form" whilst on the mortal plane.
Appearance of a Superior: +20 or +30
When an archangel or demon prince appears on the mortal plane, it generates a great wave of disturbance. The +20 is used if they appear in a mortal guise, or +30 if they appear in their true form. If this was a result of a demon using an invocation, the essence they spent on it should also be added to this.
Destroying: +1 per corporeal force or 4 hits of physical damage.
Every corporeal force in a living creature killed by a celestial, and every 4 hits of damage done to an object, sends out a small ripple. It should be noted that emotional or mental attacks generate very little noise, and few celestials can pick up on such things. Also, damage done by one celestial to another's mortal vessel does not generate any noise.
Killing a Human: +10
Humans are the most sophisticated natural construction of the world, and destroying one before its time creates a thunderclap of noise, above and beyond the damage done.
Exceptions
This is where a celestial's role proves useful. If an above action falls within normal for a celestials role, they may make a roll to determine if their action manages to avoid disturbance. As long as the GM believes that it can be justified, they may roll their role's level + their corporeal forces. A successful roll means that the action generates no noise.
Of course, this only really applies to damage and deaths caused in the line of their mortal duty. There are no roles that can justify the spending of essence or use of songs.

"Oh, there's one near the campus? Cool. The one I saw must have been a different one, I don't think I was anywhere near campus," she explained, taking his hand. "I'm Cindy," she added, introducing herself.
This that touch, the demon attempted to draw upon her memories, but after a moment's concentration she pulled her hand back away and he found himself with no new insight.
"Sure, I'll let you walk me to the gym. Company is always better than being alone," she said, moving towards the exit of the building. "But I won't let you slow me down, so I hope you can keep up," she adds, teasingly.

"Let's," she said, a pleasant grin on her face.
She re-opened the door, closed barely a minute, and then stepped through the doorway, turning back towards the elevator. On the walk back and the trip down, she flipped out the journal from her bag, looking over the various logins to which sites she'd been provided. She scanned for a bank account, reasoning Kurt's casual dress would contrast with her more office-worker outfit, making them stick out. She suggested as much to him, and asked if he'd seen anywhere she could pick up some more comfortable clothes.
Marim tried to form a plan, but with the sheer lack of information she found herself drawing a blank. There were so many approaches she could take... She could slander his character, exposing some skeletons in the closet to discredit him... or fabricating something, on the off chance he was clean. She could figure out who the preacher of the predominant church was here and use her powers to alter what was said on the show... though that would likely cause more confusing than disillusion, and they only had a day to do it, if tomorrow was Sunday... What to do, what to do.
"Say, Kurt, do you know anything about the religious community in town? Specifically where the biggest church is. I'd like to attend tomorrow, and I've always found church to be the most enjoyable with more people," she said to him, smiling pleasantly as she'd been doing.

Baphoriel smiled back and walked out the door with her.
"I'm not dressed for a jog, if that's what you mean. But I can walk fast if need be."
On the inside, the impudite was frustrated that his first attempt to use his attunement had failed miserably. He wondered at that, for he could perceive much with the strength of his Celestial forces. He looked Cindy over more closely now, wondering if perhaps it had just been a fluke and that he would need more time to touch her. He wouldn't mind that, from the look of her. She was quite easy on the eyes.
"So your first semester then. What are you studying?" he asked as he started them both in the vague direction of the campus.

Looking through the book, there was a few bank accounts; in fact, more than the average person would need. And most of which were not in her name. Of course, the book could hardly tell her the current balance in these accounts, but it did provide everything she'd need to access them. She also had a credit card in her bag, which appeared to match the main one under her mortal name.
"There's plenty of clothes shops along the main shopping strip," Kurt explained upon being asks. "Maybe you can find something you like there, who knows? I wouldn't presume to know your tastes..." He sounded rather unenthusiastic about the idea.
Arriving at his rental car, it was a sporty looking thing, black with tinted windows, definitely a status symbol. It seemed likely that Mr. Able was a lot wealthier than his rather casual clothes might suggest. "As far as the local religious nuts, what can I say? It's a town out in the middle of nowhere that attracts a crowd of young people from afar to study at the local university. The oldies gather there to complain about how young people these days act, with all the sex and drugs and alcohol and sin. I bet any one of them was just as bad at that age..."
Opening the door of the car and putting a foot in, he looks over to her and asks, "So, where to then?"

She gave a slight giggle at his response, "Why? Would jogging be a problem?" she asked teasingly, taking off at a slight jog once she was outside and looking back over her shoulder with a cheeky smile.
"I'm studying arts, majoring in literature. Some people say it's a complete waste of time, but I love poetry. Browning... Bryant... Rossetti... " she explains, drifting into a dreamy voice.

Baphoriel smiled and nodded, though on the inside he is frowning, trying to wrack the memory of his corporeal role to see if its basic schooling had made him familiar with any of the mortal poets the young student had just named.
He strolls at a walking pace, wondering how far the young woman would run ahead of him before slowing down a bit. She needed him for directions after all, though it seemed she had as much energy as an Ofanite.
"Poetry I can understand... I'm in photography myself. A picture being worth a thousand words."

Rolled it, but with a penalty considering study of poetry is hardly common knowledge for your role. No such luck, you draw a complete blank on the names. At best, you might be able to recite a few well known lines from a very well known poem.
She came to a stop and turned back, crossing her arms and looking at him unimpressed, although whether this was due to his statement or lack of speed was not clear.
"Honestly," she said in an melodramatic huff, "I warned that you had to at least try and keep up with me, Mr. Photographer," she chided him, tapping her foot as he slowly caught up.

He quickened his pace, but would not run. She had a pretty face, but he didn't feel like chasing tail so quickly after coming to earth. And he was still frustrated that his attunement hadn't worked on her.

Continuing the melodrama, she rolls her eyes in an overly exaggerated manner. "You're not coming anywhere near me with a camera if you keep making jokes that bad," she teased him, falling into step beside him. "Besides, we girls in this day and age need to be careful around boys with cameras," she added, poking her tongue out at him.
"And it's not like I'm in a hurry, it's just... well, this is too slow. If we go faster, I'll have more time to do more things. And besides, it's good for you," she added.
The streets didn't have a lot of traffic, foot or otherwise, this early in the morning, but there were a few people moving around. As they walked down the main street in town, most shops were either already open or in the state of becoming so. Cindy studied the various shops with interest, seemingly cataloguing the contents of the shop windows as they walked past.

Adrift in the empty white room, Kadolon waited until at last the voice spoke out. "I have the results of your examination back."
Strongest Match
Malakim - Warrior angels, peerless crusaders of light, the fight against evil is the only duty of these champions. And they carry out their duty with zealous efforts and often ruthless efficiency. They often pride themselves that no Malakim has ever fallen to darkness, but this is as much their own resilience and sworn oath to the light as it is their own ruthless self-regulation.
Being born for combat, Malakim cope remarkably well from the possible trauma of having their mortal body destroyed; it's an occupational hazard and they can deal with it, unlike other celestial creatures who risk going into shock. They also have the ability to make snap judgements about a creature's honour and integrity; simply studying them for a moment is enough to give them a summary on the deeds of the individual, allowing them to make a judgement and if necessary carry it out. They are also burdened by their own honour, they are known to hold oaths to the highest regard. No Malakim will ever hold less than 4 personal oaths, with two of them always being the following:
1) A Malakite shall never suffer an evil to live when its his choice. If you see a Malakite tell a demon he'll be allowed to live if he co-operates, you've just seen a Malakite lie to some poor bastard demon who's about to die.
2) A Malakim will never surrender in a fight, nor allow themselves to be captured by the armies of Lucifer. Surrender to hell would be to dishonour heaven, and death is preferable. As stated earlier, Malakim are used to dying.

In addition, she also flipped through the radio, attempting to find Julian's station, as well as checking out the other stations, looking for Nybbas' talkshow or anything that might be interesting enough to steal away attention from Julian.
She also remembered to look up as they were leaving, noting the hotel's name.

He peered into the eccentric Cindy's eyes, wondering if there was some underlying reason to her mania that he might perceive if he looked hard enough. How would a woman so manic have the patience to sit down and observe the world enough to write poetry?
"You're safe around my camera. I'm much more traditional with my photography. If you were my subject, I'd make your image into a work of art - provided I could get you to sit still for half a tic."
His steps quickened to fall into sync with hers, but he constantly tempted the pace to slow down a bit, only very slightly, trying by force of will and slight manipulation to make the quick-paced Cindy slow just enough to walk with him.
"Tell me what you find so interesting about poetry? Do you want to be a poet yourself?"
He asked the question to force conversation, and by forcing conversation he could force her to slow down a bit - or else she might break away from him, but then she'd be directionless, and he liked the idea of slowing her down for some reason.

Yet another figure found themselves adrift in the empty white room, awaiting the decision created by their exam to come to them.
"Your exam results are in," the voice declared finally.
Strongest Match
Ofanim - Angels of motion, these messengers are amongst the most whimsical angels (or as some prefer, the most insane.) Constantly in motion, they race from one task to the next, never staying still for more than is strictly necessary. Their gift is that of navigation, when they need to go somewhere, their gift reveals the quickest path for them. Be it finding somewhere such as the nearest convenience store, to something more specific like the nearest gas station that sells diesel, the Ofanim can merely focus and sense the fastest path. They can only use this to locate places that are known in the public awareness however, tracking specific objects/places is the job of the Cherubim, and anything too subjective is also difficult to find. They may also invoke their gift to add a bonus to the next agility roll they have to make, or use it to blaze across the sky in their celestial form, covering a matter of miles within minutes.
As you'd expect, an Ofanim's bane is inaction. Being bound and imprisoned is frightening and painful for them, but does not damage their soul. But having an opportunity to act and not doing so is a very dangerous thing for Ofanims, turning them away from their intended purpose. They also face corruption if they roll to apply their gift to an agility roll before using a previous roll to do so, or if their agility roll they gain the bonus to fails disastrously.
Calabim - Demons of destruction and chaos. Falled from the manic Ofanim, the Calabim externalise the motion, creating a whirlwind of entropy around them which they can use to lash out at things around them, tearing them apart at the most basic level. When in a vessel, this attack deals damage to their body, when in their celestial form it tears apart the soul.
The problem, is their attack is hardly flawless. If someone resists their strikes, the destructive energies recoil back upon the Calabim. They are then faced with two choices, the first being to swallow the attack, scarring their soul in the process (although not causing any damage). The second is to redirect that attack against a new target. Most choose the latter. Each target they fail to hit cannot be re-targeted with this attack for a matter of minutes, and only in the first failure may they choose to swallow it. After then, it continues to bounce back and forth between any available target until it succeeds, with a last resort usually being directing the target against themselves and damaging their physical or spiritual body. Needless to say, this can make Calabims risky allies to have around, and try and they might, subtlety always seems to be one step ahead of them. They're also inherantly flawed beings, moreso than most, and begin play with a single discord that cannot be bought off, at a level equal to the force of the class of discord (Corporeal Discords at level equal to Corporeal forces etc.)

As the car began to leave the parking lot, Marim was already fast at work digging through the information on her mark. Whilst the social networking sites were more or less bust in terms of anything useful, she did manage to match his name to a local radio station, 'Vibe' - 98.4FM, and promptly tuned in, but currently playing were the hits of yesturyear, According to the schedule infront of her, Wheeling wasn't on until 4pm, although he was on at that time every day of the week.
Reading the description on Vibe's website, his show was one of faith as she had previously been informed, but it was not simply reading from the bible and reflecting as many were. Julian did read passages, of course, but also had special guests, known religious icons, on his show from time to time, and encouraged people to call in to discuss the day's theme, their views and interpretations and how the word has changed them. The whole thing was a sickening mess of spirituality and people becoming closer and accepting each other's differences. More searching revealed that the man not only respected and gave time to each and every branch of Christianity, but also devoted time to and taught tolerance of some other major religions, including on occasion inviting in panel of religious leaders from various faiths to discuss comparative theology on the issues and beliefs that are common to them all in some way.
It was disgusting for Marim to see the media used in such a way, so far from its intended purpose. And while there were plenty of other radio stations to choose from in the area, including the one Nybbas had claimed influence over, being largely discussions on political affairs as a loose blanket to hide the messages of hate and fear it inspired, it seemed that this show was far too dangerous to leave unchecked and mere advertising and encouraging people to swap over would not be enough.
Just as Marim completed this research, the car pulled into a space on the main strip. "Alright, we're here. Now what?" Kurt asked, sounding slightly bored.

I think I just want to be able to share those masterpieces I love with the world so that they're not lost to time," she says with a warm smile. "What about you? Why photography, if it's not about being a playboy photographer as you say?" she asks with a raised eyebrow.

The white room faded, and like other before it, the angel found itself in a void, waiting for the world to come into focus.
The sound of heavy machinery grinding against metal was the first thing perceived, as the warrior angel found himself in a workshop. A combination of robotic arms and other angels with tools were scattered around a large, industrial hall, all working on various machine-parts. And to Kadolon, it instantly felt like home.
As he glanced about, his knowledge immediately came into play as he recognised the various things that were in construction. And finally, his eyes came to rest on something sitting over in an area where completed projects were gathered before being shipped out; a stunt motorcycle that he could just tell was his. It was... almost perfect. All it needed was a few coats of paint...

Baphoriel returned the woman's quizzical look with one of his own, acknowledging her slight dig to his role's chosen life choice. "It's difficult to put into words, but if I had to explain it best - I'd say it's about capturing a finite moment in time. Preserving it, either for memory's sake or to highlight something poignant that happens, making sure it's not forgotten and seen in the perfect light."
He shrugged. The answer was how he felt about his duty. It was how he could love humans even as he drove them to their dark fates. He could preserve the memory of those he touched every step of the way, seeing the beauty in their fall from grace. He thought very much that he would make a great photographer, assuming he picked up on mortal technology.
His role's vague repository of knowledge told him that modern techniques used computers to touch up a digital picture, to make an image somehow different than it naturally was. A touch of Nybbas' work, no doubt, and personally Baphoriel didn't care for it, though he could appreciate the insidiousness of it.
"By the way, Playboy's becoming a bit artsy these days. They don't hire just any chump with a camera you know."

She seemed to follow along with what he was saying, nodding slightly in agreement with his explanation, at least until he added the final line. "Aha, so it is about being a playboy photographer! I knew it," she teased, running a few steps ahead again.
The pair had turned off the main shopping strip and walked up a gentle hill, and now, behind her, stood the Eden University, not much further along, although she didn't seem to have noticed yet. "So it's just as I said, we girls have to stay away from boys with cameras, or we'll end up a finite moment in pornstar history," she declared, poking her tongue out at him again.

He winked at her, but made sure that he maintained his slow pace.
"But I've said you'd be safe around my camera, and I meant it. I'd rather capture that smile of yours and your jogging gait, mid-stride. Much more defining than a pair of tits."
He used his Charm Resonance on her then, wanting to cement in Cindy's mind that he was her friend and a trustworthy individual. This girl was so bright and cheery, he was tempted to steal a bit of her essence.

Marim frowned. She did not like Kurt's lack of unthusiasm, though that could be remedied later. "Now, I'm going to do some shopping," she told him. "I'm sure I'll be alright alone, Kurt. You can go attend to whatever business you need to. Ah- you said you acquire information, didn't you? Try to find out something about our man, and who the guests he will speak with today and tomorrow are and if they're actually in town, if you would. Oh, and what's your cell number?"
Scribbling it down in her journal, she wandered off into the mall, lost in her thoughts. With this new information, Marim had the beginnings of a course of action. This Julian's show was a font of compassion and understanding - the exact opposite of what her Superior wanted. Unacceptable! It couldn't just be left on the air... it undermined Nybbas' sway over the people, and we couldn't have that. It had to be sabotaged.
She could go directly to The Vibe and persuade them to take it off air... but it would undoubtedly be easy for it to broadcast over a new station, or Hell forbid, the internet, given their popularity. No, they would definitely have to take it apart, first. If she could find a guest and alter his radio while the show played, that might help a bit - or if she could plant a few ideas into his head, that would be even better - though it'd doubtless be tough to convince him of anything, seeing as he had the force of personality to take this show as far as he had.
If she could seduce him, she'd have a ripe, popular station that could be used to spread her own ideas, and a prime opportunity for, a scandal... but, Marim shook her head; seduction was not her forte.
Meanwhile, she found herself in front of a directory. She looked for the stores she needed - an electronics store, to pick up a portable radio and headphones; a phone store, to get a cell, and lastly, a clothing shop, where she'd hoped to get some low-key clothes that could conceal her features, like hoodies and beanies.

"Oh, so you think it's more than just boys with cameras that want to see this?" she asks, turning around and slowly lifting up the front of her top, revealing her smooth stomach slowly before pulling her hand away and letting it drop with a laugh. "But it's the one with cameras that can result in you posted all over the internet," she chided.
By now, however, the pair had reached near enough to the gym that she was moving towards it. "Well, this is my stop. It was nice to meet you Kieren. We should work out together sometime, it might help you keep up with me," she said with a wink.

Could that be Jean, the archangel of lightning? That would be most likely since he'd expect him to be rather old and wise, he was supposed to be the angel that developped pretty much everything humans used nowadays after all.Upon reaching this conclusion, Voltus followed the old man into the room.

With Kurt's phone number in hand, Marim began her shopping spree. She looked through the directory and rapidly became incredibly frustrated. All that was listed were store names, how was she supposed to know what it all meant? Resisting the urge to argue with the directory, she finally found a promising name: Radioshack.
Noting down the directions, she made her way to the store, only to find it closed. "We're moving location" a sign on the front declared, and inside, a part of her screamed. Marim took to wandering the shops until she found places that sold what she was looking for, likely taking three times longer than originally planned.
Even in her foul mood and growing impatience, however, she managed to avoid getting taken for a ride by the salesman who handled her phone sale. The very idea of someone trying to swindle her actually amused her enough that her mood recovered somewhat. Eventually, with her portable radio and headphones in one bag, and a new FM radio capable cell phone with portable headphones in another, she found herself standing inside a clothing store, a slight sense of dread still lingering about. There was just so much... and it was difficult for her to know what was really appropriate. Perhaps leaving Kurt behind wasn't the best idea afterall...
Yeah, Balseraphs aren't as bad as Seraphim, but you're still not great at the whole "mortal society" thing. You also rolled really bad on your shopping role, so it's been a particularly bad experience. "Ah, I see, a guardian angel to watch over man..." the voice mused.
"The following archangels would be interested in your service..."
Novalis - Archangel of Flowers. She and her servants are charged with calming the souls of humanity. Opposed to direct conflict, they work hard to promote peace and kindness where ever possible. They are strictly forbidden from either personally performing or allowing any unnecessary violence. Killing a human, for any reason, will not only damage an angel of Novalis' soul, but likely result in punishment from the archangel herself. Demons may be destroyed if they make it necessary but even against them Novalis will try kindness first.
Marc - Archangel of Trade. Promoting trade as a method of reducing war and turmoil in the world, Marc and his angels represent divine diplomats and shepherds of civilised society. His angels do not lie, other than in omission and can be relied upon to follow through with promises. It is in fact, forbidden for them to break their word. Cherubim of Marc can know any object's true and rightful owner simply by touching it.
Jordi - Archangel of Animals. Shunning society and civilisation, Jordi longs for more primal and wild ways. It is forbidden for his servants to value the life of a human above that of an animal; all life is equal in value regardless of intelligence. When angels of Jordi kill, it must be cleanly and without pain. All angels of animals are attuned to a type of animal, and are able to communicate basic concepts to such animals through sound and gesture; however each servant of jordi must have at least one animal vessel. Cherubim of Jordi are attuned to cats, and often take watch over people by posing as their pet. That said, they can just as easily take the big cats as vessels...

"Ah, good, right then," he said, flipping over the blackboard. "As I certainly hope you're aware, it is the greatest offence for one of my angels to lose a piece of celestial technology in the mortal world. Needless to say, someone has," he explained, attempting to maintain a neutral tone of voice, but obvious annoyance dripping through.
"Your mission, is one of search and recovery. The device in question is what I called a babel phone. It's a both a celestial artifact* with the corporeal song of tongues** in it, and a talisman that allows the holder to speak a single specific language; in this particular model's case, Spanish. I wouldn't normally entrust such an important mission to a rookie, but I don't have anyone else available at present. It's vitally important that you recover the phone before its secrets are discovered by mortals, or it is captured by the demonic."
"Luckily for us, I've taken the liberty to encode the transmissions of all of my babel phones with a special marker to help us identify any calls made from them. I'll be sending you to a telecommunications company I've got strong ties to, who've been trying to track this phone. I believe they have some leads, and they can redirect you from there. Stay in regular contact with them so they can keep you updated of its movements, and recover that phone as quickly as possible. If we're in luck, whoever has it now won't even notice its functions. If you need any help, call me immediately. Any questions?"
* Celestial artifacts are the most powerful variety, often able to either store or in some cases create essence, or such as in this one's case, perform a song, celestial magic. Rare ones may even do all of the above.
** The corporeal song of tongues allows the user to communicate in every mortal language at once. He will understand every language, and people will hear him in whatever language they're most comfortable with as if he was speaking it.

"I'd like that," he said and meant it. He watched Cindy jog off towards the gym, taking a moment to admire her figure and to etch as much of her into his mind as he could.
When she had sped on a decent way, he turned and continued on towards his original destination: the registrar's office. hoping to get some contact information for the painter, or at the very least to determine whether or not he was associated with the university. If he wasn't then Baphoriel figured that the library computers might be the next best spot to look up if he was a part of a local gallery.
He whistled a nameless tune and casually walked down the college walkways, enjoying his time on Earth immensely.

Still frustrated with her confusing first encounter with human society, Marim ran a hand over her hair a few times as she stood outside the clothing store before stopping to rub at her temple. It annoyed her that she hadn't thought it all would be so confusing...
Deciding there was no sense in rushing, uncertain about her mode of dress and human society in general. she found a place to sit down and put on her radio's headphones. The first thing that came on that wasn't static was a slow little love ballad. Marim smirked, and, looking around to make sure no one was near, whispered to herself: "Radio, radio, in my hand, who's the fairest in the land?", and willed the music to sing praises for her. Exercising her power even in a small way like that helped remind her of her celestial superiority - and the flattery was nice, too.
She needed some clothes that would help her blend in and hide her features... So watched the people passing by as she reclined in her bench, trying to form a coherent plan for her wardrobe. she kept seeing people walk by in shirts made of thick cloth, with long sleeves and hoods - appropriately called "hoodies", her implanted memories told her. Nearly everyone left the hoods hang behind them, though, so she'd need something to cover her vivid hair... she saw a few girls wearing knit caps that could stretch down quite far and hugged the wearer's head - "beanies"? A silly name, but it would work quite nicely, she thought. As a last observation, she saw these people had sturdier pants made of a coarser, more durable material than the ones she wore. "Jeans", her mind told her.
She'd need some shirts not so formal if she were to blend in, and some new shoes as well... and of course, she should probably pick out muted colors, to help her avoid standing out.
She supposed the clerks could help her pick a good set.
After the song finished, she tuned to 98.4 FM, and checked her new phone for the time. Surely she couldn't have taken so long that it was 4:00 already?

The Malakite strode across the workshop to the motorbike, taking in the sights and sounds of the room and those within as he did so. This was the one place he could relax, but he still didn't allow his guard to drop - a warrior must always be alert to his surroundings, after all, even when they throught it was safe.
Even so, Kadolon allowed himself a small smile, running one hand gently over the unpainted shell, feeling the smoothness of the metal under his fingers. "The colour of shadows..." he muttered to himself and the bike. He closed his eyes to visualize the different shades those words evoked, before settling on one. "Dark purple - almost black."
His eyes re-opened even as the smile faded and, giving the bike - his bike - one final pat, he moved back through the workshop, seeking the equipment, and the assistance, to make the finishing touches.

The campus was quite understandably rather empty, being still mid-morning on a Saturday before the semester had even started but there were still some staff members and the like around who could redirect him to where he needed to be. Before long, he found himself at a door with the words registrar's office on the plaque, and knocked.
"Just a moment," came a voice from the inside, male and from the sound of it, caught slightly off guard. Still, before Baphoriel could consider this, the voice came again. "Enter," to declared, as Baphoriel opened the door, he found a slightly amused looking young girl walking towards him; no, towards the exit. She was incredibly beautiful by mortal standards, with vibrant red hair and a near flawless pale complexion. And her body was at equally high standard, her curves were definitely accentuated but at the same time she wasn't too big. And without a word, she stepped past him. "Thanks for the help, Mr. Austin," she called over her shoulder in... a somewhat mocking tone of voice, Baphoriel thought.
And then she was gone. "Now young man, what can I do for you?" he asked, looking at Baphoriel.

Before moving into the clothing store, Marim did succeed in coaxing the radio to praise her and it proceeded to whisper flatteries of her superiority back to the Balseraph. Still, with no idea of the time at present, she went into the clothing store, and with some help clothing was picked out for her, she tried them on as suggested and found sizes that fit.
When she finally got out and tuned in, she found the time to be getting close to 5pm, with the two hour radio show already in full swing. She did notice that it appeared that the stores around her were beginning to close.
"...must do, and can do successfully, is to show the structures of anxiety, of conflicts, of guilt. These structures, which are effective because they mirror what we are, are in in us, and if we are right, they are in other people also. If we bring these structures before them, then it is as if we held up a mirror in which they see themselves. Whether we shall succeed in this nobody knows. This is the risk we must take.
It is these things that make us human, and through understanding this, we can all understand each other and work towards a brighter future. Now we'll go the phones and see what our audience has to offer on this subject."

Just as he began to look around for tools, he spotted a large, somewhat burly angel striding towards him, carrying in one hand the very tools he needed to do the painting job. "You must be the new guy, Kadalon, right?" he asked, and continued to speak before waiting for an answer. "The name's Noan, I run this particular workshop. The boss sends his apologies, he's occupied elsewhere at the moment, but I can fill you in on what's happening while we wait for him."
Handing the tools to the Malakite, he chuckled a little to himself. "I think you're gonna like your first assignment. I'd warn you that it's dangerous, but that'll probably just get you all the more excited. The shipments of one of our corporeal companies, which we use to monitor technology in the world as well as roll out new gifts and inspiration to mankind, have been being attacked lately. Given that it's been targeted only against us and mortal authorities have been having so much trouble with it, we're fairly certain someone on the other side is responsible."
"So, we've consolidated our shipments into one big convoy. Five trucks running our goods cross country. You see where this is going, right? By having them all run together, we can guarantee that the attack comes against them. And you, along with some other angels, will be running escort. It'll happen out in the desert, where there won't be any witnesses, and it'll be messy, if previous encounters are any judge. So, blood pumping yet?"

Baphoriel couldn't help but let his eyes linger on this new beauty, and felt a bit sad to have been so thoroughly ignored by her. She seemed to be the self-assured type, and he liked those. Ah, but he must continue on his mission he supposed. Kronos had asked him to direct this painter towards his fate with all haste, and set against the tampering of an angel, he felt he must not get sidetracked chasing tail, no matter how hot that tail was. He took one more long look at the red head's swishing ass, then let the door close and obscure his view. Turning he addressed this Mr. Austin fellow, who seemed harmless enough.

Strongest Matches
Kyriotate - Possessing angels who lack bodies of their own. Rather than inhabit a mortal shell, a vessel, Kyriotates borrow existing mortals, sending them into a euphoric, dreamlike state while they do their work. This kind of angel can inhabit multiple bodies at once, as long as the total bodies inhabited does not exceed their total "forces". So while a starting Kyriotate couldn't possess 2 humans, he could take a human and a dog, or a human and a pair of birds.
However, Kyriotates are protectors first and foremost, they cannot leave a vessel in a worse state than they found it. While they can stay in a vessel up to 6 days, depending on how well the possession goes. They may leave at any time but cannot repossess the same person, and it should be noted that leaving them in a worse state includes not only physically, but also in the sense of their current situation and the near future; leaving them right before they get beaten up will still wound one's soul. Lastly, Kyriotates cannot spend more than 10 minutes x Celestial forces without any host body. If they do, they're pulled back to heaven, and their superior will likely be very displeased.
Shedim - Fallen Kyriotates and corrupting demons. Like their counterparts, Shedim cannot generate their own vessels and rely on existing mortals to house themselves. But, the selfish Shedim are incapable of the multiplicity of their former nature and can only inhabit a single vessel at once. That said, their control is very different; Shedim have full access to the hosts' thoughts, feelings and memories and the host drifts along with them in a dazed state, still thinking it's in control of its actions rather than wandering the dream worlds. A Shedim bends their mind and convinces them that the horrible acts it perpetrates was their idea.
To maintain possession, however, these demons must commit a new level of corruption each day, surpassing previous ill deeds. Each day, the bar is raised by previous deeds until finally the demon cannot manage it, and must leave the body or wound their soul by trying to remain. For this reason, they tend to pick the quiet, innocent ones, and step by step drive them into darkness in order to maximise their time to complete other goals. If a host is rendered unconscious, the demon is expelled 30 minutes later, but if the host is killed while the demon is inside their soul is scarred for being brought so close to oblivion. They are still expelled into the moral world, and if they can swiftly find a new host, they can avoid the risk of going into death related shock. Like their heavenly counterparts, they can only exist in the mortal world without a host for 10 x celestial forces minutes.

"Ah, very curious indeed... your results are in..." came the deep echoing voice.
Best Matches

"Hm... a Lilim, is it? The following would be interested in having a Lilim"
Lastly, Beleth, Princess of Nightmares, has expressed interest in a new servitor. Easily the most feared of the demonic forces, she is aloof and has little to do with most other demons. She rules over the dark reflection of the dreamworld, the land of nightmares. Lilim of Beleth add fear to their geas, if a target resists fulfilling their end of the bargain, they gain a fear of the demon's choice, which worsens over time until it is performed. However, demons of Beleth are forbidden from assuring their true forms on earth, and thus it hurts them to do so.

Austin nodded and typed something into his computer. And then frowned. Tapped at his keyboard a little more, and scowled at the computer. "Blasted thing, can never rely on it," he said angrily. "My system's locked up, I'll just have to quickly reboot it..."
Moment later, he slammed his hands down on his desk. "This is... useless piece of junk!" he shouted, grabbing the phone on his desk. "Hello, IT? Yes. This is Austin, my system's just completely crashed, and now it's showing that the database is empty. Yes, I know that's usual, so fix it already."

Due to that, worst case scenario, we're looking at Calabim. We're hoping it's not that bad though, it might just be some well armed soldiers."
"As to who, I don't think it's been finalised yet. I know there's a Cherubim or two going along to help keep things running smoothly. I think we were gonna try and get one of the Ofanim along as well, and a Kyriotate might be free as well. This'll be a big operation and you'll have plenty of other support out there. We're also taking along whatever soldiers we can spare. I wish I had more details, but I'm not completely up to date."
"As far as weapons, we've got a shortage up here at the moment, resources are stretched thin. But they'll be able to set you up with something down below. You'll be heading out as soon as the boss gets here to fill you in with the latest and send you away, so I'd get that paintjob done post haste. The angel nodded slowly, before turning to the job at hand, searching for the appropriate colour and making sure to set everything up perfectly - it wouldn't do to rush the application, or the finish would end up streaky. The best thing Kadolon found about working with your hands is that it left the mind free to do other things.
He sighed quietly, thinking over the information he'd been given. While he wasn't as combative as the Malakim of Michael or Laurence, he was still one of the Virtues, and so more than able to hold his own against most celestials - or their soldiers. One of the Calabim, however, could be problematic, especially with the glut of targets that would be in the area, but it couldn't be helped. This needed to be taken care of, and it was the best chance they had of doing so without collateral.
He sighed again, shaking his head as he glanced over his work. "Let's just hope that any damage ends up being repairable..." he said with a wry smile, glancing back up at Noan and knowing full well that while he was good with machines and technological things, he wasn't so good with putting bodies back together.

Immediately she felt the irritation she'd just relieved herself of return. She couldn't make an effective counterargument if all she heard was the last half of his closing! And even then, it was so abstract and his speech so byzantine, she barely understood what he was talking about. Something about how anxiety, conflict, and guilt were base human nature, and understanding it would... bah.
And not only that, but she was already stumbling in her service. Surely Nybbas would not be pleased.
She kept the radio on, listening to the callers to hopefully build her comprehension of the day's subject. With her arm threaded through the handles of her bags, she idly fingered the little journal in her purse...
And then a sudden flash of thought struck her, remembering the multitude of accounts written in the journal. It might be a bit premature to change direction already, but... everything she'd thought until now had been quite malicious, what if she simply killed him with kindness? Perhaps she should consider instead making Julian a little bit richer. A few large donations from a few people, some half-hearted attempts to conceal her appreciation, perhaps a furtively made second account by Mr. Wheeling...
Marim realized her train of thought had taken her away from the radio. She could plot later; for now, she shifted her attention back to the radio, and scanned the storefronts she passed for stores that might be selling some gloves that would keep her from getting her fingerprints over things. Noan just smiled wryly and nodded as Kadolon worked. "Well, I don't think I can be much more help, so if you'll excuse me...?" he asked, as he began to move away. Before long he was back into the thick of things in the garage, overseeing a dozen different projects.
Time passed as the Malakim painted, until he was simply waiting for the final coat to dry. It was then that a rather tense looking old man, white strikes through his hair, made his way through the garage at a brisk walk. He seemed angry or annoyed, but not at anyone in particular, but as if that was his constant state.
"Ah. Good. You're already here," he said as he made his way over to Kadalon. "Has Noan filled you in? Good. Details are just being finalised now, so we'll be sending you down soon. We've also managed to find another Malakim to help out on this; he's done some work for us from time to time, but isn't on our books, so to speak. The radio continued on, with sickening stories of love, kinship and togetherness. It was all so very tame, dull and boring. There was not excitement to be found in all this which made it very difficult for a demon of Nybbas to concentrate on it. Still, she endured it and listened through until the show ended.
Further adding to her annoyance, in the few minutes she had until the stores all closed, she didn't manage to find one she could get gloves from. But she did manage to find one just after it had closed. And then another, again, just as the storekeeper locked up. And a third, exactly the same. She was rapidly coming to the conclusion that shopping was a human ritual designed to frustrate specifically her.
Reviewing what she had heard, the radio show itself could be attacked, if she wanted to. All she'd have to do is call in, make it through whatever screening process they had, and then contradict the host with a message carefully chosen. But that would perhaps not be the most effective method. Perhaps a secondary tactic?

Effort required to post compared to effort required to generate new character.
If you want to write up your own, submit it to me via PM for approval so I can double-check over everything. But be warned, it's a pain in the ass to find all the info for character creation, the poor is really poorly set out in that regard.
If you're willing to wait, I'll have it up by the weekend at the latest.

Alright, I'll give it a look-over at least. I remember scratching a Lillim once, and yeah, it was all over the place. At least I have a template to go off of now, with your stuff on every thread :D

Jean nodded solemnly. "The convoy will consist of a main five trucks hauling our cargo. Well, out apparent cargo. We can't afford any more loss of goods, so the trucks are empty, but it's very important that no one down below knows that, or the trap won't work. Bahpon will lead them in a jeep, with one of our soldiers riding with him. Arrem will be in another jeep to the rear of the convoy and has the hard task of keeping tabs on everyone; he'll be attuned to someone in every vehicle, so casualties are not an option. Due to this, he probably has the hardest job, so he's relying on everyone else to get us all through this. You and the other Malakite will ride on the flanks alongside the trucks and act as an interception force. It's dangerous, but that's why you're the one doing it. Out in the field, Bahpon will call the shots on how to engage when and if you make contact," he explained, or rather briefed angel.
"If you've got any other questions, the ground team can fill you in;it's time to get moving," Jean explained; instantly the angel felt the world fall away as he drifted down to earth. Moment later, he was standing in a very different garage, his bike beside him as a group of people noticed him and waved him over. "You must be the new guy. Sent from Mal, right?" one of them asked, yelling over the noise.
Around the garage, various vehicles were being fuelled up, including what was presumably the two jeeps Jean mentioned and a lot of workers were shouting back and forth to one another. A tension hung over the place, this was definitely the staging area for Jean's gambit.

Following the map of the campus, Baphorial made his way to the arts department, only to find it... rather empty. Making a few enquiries around the immediate area, he quickly discovered that no one from arts was in this early on a Saturday, and if they came in at all, it wouldn't be until after noon; the time now being around 9am still.
Dejected, he headed over to the library to run an internet search. Unfortunately, the best he could fine was someone from Massachusetts who didn't seem to fit the bill.

"Ah, I see... a difficult path indeed," the voice mused.
Seraphim of Novalis emit an aura of peace that forces anyone who would commit violence around them to make a will roll to be able to do so.
Seraphim of Marc can tell just by looking into someone's eyes how much money they'd pay for something. They also recover much faster from failing to activate their Seraphim powers.
Michael - Archangel of War. A proud, fierce warrior, he personally kicked Lucifer out the door during the fall and was made Archangel of War for his efforts. Stubborn and individualistic, Michael is much more a warrior than general, so much so that he doesn't command Heaven's armies (that falls to Lawrence, another archangel). That said, he looks after his own so long as they obey his primary rule: You do not retreat from a fight, unless you've been directly ordered to. Seraphim of Michael strike true, they apply a penalty to enemy dodge rolls made against their attacks.

"Ugh! Damnable place, she thought. Of course every place she found would close as soon as she needed in. The bag's loops rubbing against her arm didn't help her mood, either - they weren't heavy and the plastic of the loops didn't irritate her skin, but in long and increasingly frustrating time she'd spent wandering this accursed place their swinging pull had become quite offensive.
However, it mattered little. She'd found several stores that had what she wanted, and tomorrow she could come back (WITH Kurt) and get them.
Running yet more courses of action through her head, Marim recalled the less subtle powers she had at her disposal. With her song of possession, she could make Julian say anything she wanted! Reviewing what she knew of the song, she would almost certainly be noticed using it, but she'd have Kurt to watch her body while she did her business.
She didn't want to reveal herself to Julian - she planned on doing a few less than legal things, and if he could identify her it would be disastrous. If she could find his home, she could use his computer to incriminate him with some serious electronic crimes. That ought to shut him down quite nicely, but if she could use her song of possession on him, she would be able to devastate his reputation!
But, there was the problem of actually finding his home. If he broadcast over The Vibe, surely they would have his address on record somewhere? And if tomorrow was Sunday, surely she would have a window to move while he was at church?
Her adrenaline started pumping. It was risky, but far from impossible, and how impressive would it be, if she could complete the task she'd been set a mere two or three days after coalescing out of the swirling notes of the Symphony?!
The idiocy of this place forgotten, she flipped out her phone and called Kurt, shivering with anticipation. "Hello? Hi, hon, could you come get me? I know what we're going to do."

Baphoriel mused unhappily. Well, he was making a large assumption that this Nailor was attached to the university. There was a chance that he wasn't. He decided to check the phone book for Eden, intent on finding all possible spellings of Nailor or Naylor or whatever. There couldn't be that many variations of Eric Nailor living in town, and he hoped that the man would at least have a listed number. The guy was a painter afterall, not a rock star.

Baphoriel found himself a phonebook, and began his searching. He perhaps had finally hit a stroke of luck, as before long he had indeed located "Nailor, E." and copied down a phone number and address. Perhaps he was finally getting somewhere after all.

"Glad to hear it," came a less than enthusiastic reply. "I'll be there soon, where abouts are you exactly?" Getting the exact location from Marim, Kurt was apparently on his way to collect her.
And sure enough, before long his car pulled up before her, and waited for her to climb into the passengers seat. "Where to now?" he asked in a slightly bored tone of voice as she climbed in.

And only one? Perfect.
Baphoriel was pleased to see a new way forward, and intended to follow up on his find without delay. He searched up directions to the address and memorized them as best he could.
I've got to get a good look at him so I can determine what Fate he needs to meet. Must be careful though... Kronos warned me this guy was under angelic surveillance.
Baphoriel headed out of the library, determined to track down the painter to his home residence.

Sitting in the car seat, Marim steepled her fingers in front of her chest, elbows resting on the armrests. Grinning cheerfully, she began speaking, eyes focused on nothing in particular. "Kurt, my friend, I just got my first tech support call! From The Vibe. They want me to look over their databases for security vulnerabilities later on tonight. But, oh, my hands get so cold, do you think there's anywhere still open around here I could get a pair of nice gloves to keep my fingertips all warm and covered?"
(I should probably note that I mostly cannot into computer and have no idea what this IT/hacking stuff should actually go like, and will totally butcher it horrifically.)
