Hey guys. This has been confusing me lately. These two ever so intelligent youtubers have given me two terms that define the same thing, but I don't know which is the right one. Can you guys help me?

I don't bother arguing with em, but it bugs me too sometimes. Occasionally (frequently?) you find a comment that makes you wonder, even with their txt speak, why do they bother?

Found this page myself a while back and just had to save it.

Hah... There was a kid in middle school I knew that turned papers in with U on them instead of You

Admittedly, I used to do that sometimes in text...
but then I got a keyboard phone. That habit died faaaaaaaast.

There is such a thing as internet language. We use no end of words and phrases that non internet using type people wouldn't understand in the slightest. But that sorry excuse for "communication" in the youtube comments isn't it.

Language is the use of words and phrases and the inventions of the same to convey ideas. That's not so much a language as it is shorthand. And it's fairly shitty at that.

Txt speak and 1337 speak are two different things. Txt annoys me because of the lazyness (on a phone it's permissible, though I still don't use it), 1337 only annoys me when people actually thing using it makes them "1337". Just for the hell of it 1337 can actually be a fun improvised code of sorts. I know someone who can read and type in complex 1337 speak virtually at the same speed they can type normal sentences. It's quite a challenge to try and keep up with their chat conversations when they do it. (normally because I started reading in on them in the first place...)

I just noticed my older posts have a lot less spelling mistakes than my newer ones. I'll start using the apostrophe and big I's again.
It's because I'm used to Word.

It's not "Internet Language" those little fucks need to go back to elementary school to learn how to write properly.

I've never used "text talk", except with certain phrases. ILU, BRB, BFF, LOL, things like that. I never have and never will shorten words. It's always phrases. Unless I'm trying to be funny when I'm speaking in the real world.

Blegh. I'd like to see them try that on an English paper.

Vocabulary review

text language - the dumbfuck's way of just saying "shorthand". disregard these people as human beings.
internet language - at most, it's just the terms that the internet has popularized
1337 speak - not text language. 1337 5P34K 15 /\/\0R3 |_13K 7415, where as text language is just overpopularized shorthand for the lazy youth

If anyone has time to waste and cares for a challenge, try translating this. I watched in horror as this was typed out in a mere minute or two. (A couple of years back, not just for this thread.)

@Squid

Is that instructions on how to cook Pasta?

Unknown Squid
25th March 2010, 00:28
It is indeed. You might question how helpful the instructions are, but that is what it is. Now I think about it, I dunno if that wins the prize or not. Seems pointless to make you write the whole thing out, but awarding for saying just the gist is cheep. Didn't put much thought into this mini competition...

Internet/Text speak is only a good idea when you're saying it out loud. Then it becomes funny (because you're making fun of the poor saps who are dimmer than a half-dead lightning bug).

So the next time you get offered that spiked gin, make a dumb face with big eyes and say "DOES NOT WANT!"
