After another hour or so, however, the sky clouded over, and it began to rain. Curiously, Maria saw a single bolt of lightning strike somewhere in the midst of the town, but didn't think anything of it. Pulling her cloak in further, she trudged on through the growing mud.

As she trudged on, she suddenly heard a horse neigh up ahead.

Holding her rifle tight, Maria keeps going down the road, and after a moment she sees a horse running up the road, but starts is surprise as she sees a bunch of red tendrils sprouted from the beasts belly, waving wildly as the horse charges toward her. It isn't until the beast is nearly on top of her, only five feat away, that Maria is able to snap out of her trance and react.

She had little doubt in her mind what this beast was going to try to do to her once it had her pinned down, and despite the fact that she knew she somewhat still had a chance to fight even in those circumstances, she would much prefer not to.

Her cloak had gotten quite muddy, but it isn't anything she couldn't just brush off. The horse gives a last gasp as it dies from its wounds just as she looks down at it, and she turns back down the path.

After traveling for a half an hour or so in the rain, Maria spots a path leading off into the woods, going straight in the direction of the town. A shortcut perhaps? She couldn't be sure, but even if it wasn't she could always just turn back.

Maria looks at the path as she peers around, she realizes that it would probably be better to travel through the forest, thinking that at least larger beasts would have a harder time sneaking up on her, plus it would mean that it would be slightly easier for her to hide if she really needed to.

She comes out of the woods back onto the road much closer to Artmirst, and spots another such path up ahead on the opposite side of the road. Maria guesses that someone must have gotten sick of the turns and just gone straight through.

Moving swiftly down to the next path, Maria heads down it just as quietly as the first one, and suddenly the forest clears to reveal a massive black oak tree, with numerous mobile vines waving around it while others are off in different parts of the forest. It didn't seem to notice her, and she had a fallen tree sitting in front of her which she could easily prop her rifle against if she wished to try and attack the animate tree.
